  • A Hero's Tale - Card Design Competition Discussion Thread

Defying my initial expectations, most people seem to like my second version of Anduin. I think I'll submit it as a 5-cost. I'd like it to still be somewhat of a dedication to play. Might still change my mind later and go with 4.

I'm a little late with feedback, so for those who haven't submitted yet:

    Late Feedback

    Demon
Warchief Trall makes a lot of sense for a card representing a hero and it will probably do well, but I personally like Icelich Jaina's more creative effect better. She gives me Frostmourne vibes and would be a nice non-aggro addition to Frost DK. It definitely needs to be a DK card, so I think CursedParrot's Dual-class suggestion works well.

    Wailor
Admiral Jaina should probably focus more on a single effect. Beastmaster Rexxar is solid. Focusing on Animal Companions works well. From the new ones, I like the second one the best. Maybe make it a 6-cost. And otherwise I prefer the original over the other version. Three Animal Companions at a time is already decently powerful and I like the consistency better.

    anchorm4n
Is Valeera returning herself to your hand intentional? Seems potentially broken.

As far as conditions on Gul'dan go, I like "If the minions in your deck are all Demons" best.

    BasilAnguis
Immediately went for the four tokens, ey? Cool card, although I think Windlord's Blessing is still kind of weak compared to infinite Murlocs or free summons/damage. I'd at least remove the Overload. I also think it's a shame that the mention of the Elemental Lords in the Battlecry doesn't fit anymore. Elemental Blessing is slightly generic…

    Neoguli
I think I like Anduin's effect better. I don't know much Lore, but I honestly don't think the effect itself warrants Dual-class. And I agree with Demon's point. (I'm fine with Warrior, but I don't trust Priest and their copying/resummoning shenanigans.) How about "Battlecry: Give adjacent minions Immune for as long as this is alive." Otherwise Uther is a solid alternative.

    Dolphinslayer
The third version seems best. Mage does tend to summon elementals instead of playing them, but that would potentially make it deal a lot more damage, so I think you should keep it like this. As others mentioned, some more attack would probably be a good addition to its Freezing effect.

    BloodMefist
I know you've already submitted, but Warlord Garrosh is probably my favorite card here. It's exactly what you'd want from a Legendary for Handbuff Taunt Warrior.

  • Hearthstone Mercenaries Support Ending, No More Regular Content Updates After 25.4

    Quote From dapperdog

The gaming sphere back in the 90s was mostly 2d side scrollers. If Im not mistaken warcraft 1 was the first really popular RTS made, and diablo 1 was pretty much the best, if not the first, game of that genre in the west. Blizz tends to innovate more often than copy.

I think Dune II was the game that put RTS on the map, certainly for PC players. While Warcraft does innovate upon that formula, it is clearly using that game's design as a starting point.

  • A Hero's Tale - Card Design Competition Discussion Thread

I decided to go with Rexxar bc there's already too many Jainas, so here's two versions that try to correct the issue of not doing anything after three spells:

I prefer the flavor of the second one, as it portrays better the fact the Companions are Rexxar's beloved friends. However, it's too wordy (Animal Companion is too long for a keyword lol), so I think I'll go with the first one.

    Feedback:

    BloodMefist
I prefer Garrosh hands down. His effect is really cool and interesting; and also fits the character a lot.

Gul'dan's effect is also interesting (although not so much), but the main issue I have with it is how wordy it is, which makes the card look unappealing at first glance.

    Demonxz95
The new Jaina is cool, but I still prefer Thrall.

    anchorm4n
I like the damage version, as a Demon Highlander deck might be a bit too restrictive.

    CursedParrot
Both cards are solid, but I'd say I prefer Valeera, as she seems more fun.

Thrall's effect is a bit too abstract for my taste, if that makes any sense, but he's also cool. If you end up going with him, I like the alternate wording linkblade suggested the best, as it's also affects generated spells (unlike the second wording you suggested later)

    BasilAnguis
You polished your previous card a great deal. Well done! My only issue now is that the words "minion", "weapon" and "spell" should be written in lowercase. This affects both Thrall himself and Windlord's Blessing.

    Dolphinslayer
I think the new machine gun Jaina is my favorite among your cards, but I don't play Hearthstone, so I don't have PTSD from Sire Denathrius. The freeze all enemies version might be a safer bet, considering this (although she should probably cost 9, considering she powercreeps Deep Freeze a lot).

  • Understanding Meta Shifts Before They Happen

So a new balance patch just hit.

Attrox got nerfed Jinx got nerfed but more importantly a ton of cool decks got massively buffed so what the hell do you play?

Reading patch notes to understand what's viable and what isn't is a tough skill to master, even a ton of pro players are notoriously bad at it.

So I'm gonna help you out and list the top winners from the patch:

    1. Illoi 3 mana tenticle smash is nuts and she got eye of God equipment before in the expansion making this deck a must play

    2. Jax another good deck that got pushed over the edge of awesome with the recent buffs.

    3. Thralls just that one change to lissandra makes this deck wprth revisiting on curve it's the same as playing a thrall on 1 so you're 10 times more likely to turbo out

    4. Master yi leveling in deck is nuts first he gained a mana reduction passive now hes a guaranteed flip how great for Ionia!

    5. Shivana while this deck is in need of some new support cards if you want to run ramp shivana into asol or shadow shivana it will be okay but not great.

    6. Lucian heckarim is looking good with the challenger landmark ephemeral combo. Lucian outside of combo deck is worse where his mana reduction and statline is a liability. Play for the flip.

    7. Sion duplicate - so everyone saw the new card and though anivia enabler that's small brain big brain is 3 sions with infinite rally. Only trouble is that discard Sion is kind of a bad aggro deck so you need to rely on shadow isles to help stabilize a bit.

    8. Kayle not a huge fan of the champ design but I think this mana reduction will help bring bard back. They curve together now and you can hit your free 1 mana, 2 mana chimes to buff her easily then use spells to get her the rest of the way.

So there you have it the meta shift before it happens Jax and Illoi looking like the top contenders for new competitive lists. Jinx and attrox moving down to make room for new exciting possibilities. Gj riot

    ‐------extra note-----

I forgot about the hallowed Katarina nerf because that deck is so idiot proof I'd rather imagine it doesn't exist.

So yeah ruined reckoned (5 mana no blocks) was nerfed before and now Katarina got nerfed the deck will still be very playable because Katarina gets extra attack so her base stats don't really matter.

That being said, the more nerfs to hallowed the better its just too consistent on both the aggro play, and the closer. So still S tier I guess because easy = winrate but in reality I say A tier along with all the other meta nerfs.

  • Hearthstone to Receive a Murloc Dragon Minion in the Upcoming Mini-Set, Return to Naxxramas?

    Quote From Unreal89

Remember Deathstalker Rexxar, a Hunter Hero? And his hero power "Craft a custom Zombeast", where you discover 2 beasts and combine them into 1 minion?

How about a card (Hero ?) - "Craft a custom Dragon-Murloc" - where you discover a Dragon, then discover a Murloc - and combine their stats and effects into 1 minion? :)

IT Will be more like discover two different minion types  so like undead & beast  / dragon & elemental/ pirate & quilboar and combine them like a zombeast

  • A Hero's Tale - Card Design Competition Discussion Thread

Changed the wind blessing to be about weapon attacks and the near Shaman exclusive keyword, Windfury (seems so obvious now lol). Also added a condition to Thrall's battlecry. By playing a card of each type (which are all equally important to Shaman's identity) you show you mastered them all and can get a power boon.

    Feedback:

    Show Spoiler

CursedParrot - I really like the Thrall more. Valera's effect could be problematic if it bounces too many times. Could have a randomly generated hand each turn almost.

Demonxz95 - Honestly it's kinda weak. Remembrance of Ice exists and is technically better, as you get another copy instead of Jaina's 6/6 vanilla body. of course mage has more reliable freezes than DK, but the inconsistency of having her in her hand is the biggest drawback.

anchorm4n - The no Duplicate one i like more because i'm a sucker for Highlander. And the 10 damage taken condition is very very easy to fulfill. Each  step on the Questline asks you for 8.

BloodMefist - Garrosh' idea seems the better one to me. The fact it has taunt matters more for handbuffs than for the taunt itself. Still it would be nice if he had a way to increase his own Attack somehow.

AeroJulwin - The inheriting version is the best and as a priest main i'd love for this to be real, but please don't make it 6 mana. that's way too expensive. 4 or 5 would be much better. The issue with these sort of decks is that either you have too many spells and few minions to buff or too many minions and don't draw spells in time.

Dolphinslayer - Water Elementals and Arcane spells just don't mix thematically. Also that one has too many words to fit in the box nicely. The mass freeze version seems better. I don't like the random damage nuke version because we already have too many of those in game (2 c'thuns, daddy Denathrius, and now Astalor. It's just a huge game ender you have to do little for it to be OP. Mage can spam elementals all day.

Neoguli - Uther is better. Perfect flavor, the 3/3 theme fits, effect is good but not game winning alone. Anduin doesn't really work i feel because the merge between priest and warrior is… well, a paladin. Warrior of Light, which is technically what he becomes.

Wailor - There is definetly too many water elemental Jainas lol. The Rexxar one i like more cause it's the only Rexxar so far. And the effect is quite good but also self limiting. After 3 spells, any more fizzle out, don't trigger him anymore. Not sure how to word it to not let that happen.

    Pro

    More feedback, as promised.

    CursedParrot
Contrary to linkblade, I actually prefer Valeera. I don't really like changing spell schools and minion tribes because I imagine it being hard to implement into the game and potentially confusing for players. That said, Valeera looks like a really fun addition to the Thief archetype. Easy 4 stars from me!

    Demonxz95
The new Jaina looks very cool on its own, I'd love to play with it. The card would need a dedicated set to come out with though, because it doesn't fit the usual Mage flavor very well imo. You can always go with a custom expansion of course, but in this case I'd probably suggest to go alternate timeline: What if KotFT's legendary Hero cards would have been minions instead? CursedParrot aso has made a good point with their dual-class suggestion, I think I'd like that as well. All in all, I can't even tell which card I prefer. Thrall is the more conservative approach and has received positive feedback. Jaina is more creative which has a lot of merit on its own. For me personally, both are 5 stars contenders.

    BlooMefist
Garrosh is a potential winner card in my books. Very well done!

    AeroJulwin
I second what the others have said. Solid card!

    Dolphinslayer
I'm with linkblade here: The third version is my favorite, but you should adjust the stats.

  • A Hero's Tale - Card Design Competition Discussion Thread

@Linkblade91: Thanks for the feedback! Based on it, I'm planning to change the wording to "Battlecry: If your deck has no duplicates, give all spells in it the fire, frost, and nature schools" so that it fits without shrinking text (I also changed it to give spells without a school those schools, for wording reasons and because it gives it some compensatory power for being a Battlecry and thus making it far less consistent). Do you think that'd work?

@Demonxz95: Why not make Jaina Dual-Class? It would fit her lore and be a cool connection between Knights of the Frozen Throne and March of the Lich King! It even makes me imagine a set of Dual-class Death Knights for every original Hero which would have been really fun in this expansion.

@BloodMeFist: Garrosh seems really cool to me, it serves as a Handbuff/Taunt payoff and feels like a balanced version of Soulstealer at a Baseline! I'd go with him as it, you could try to increase the health if you think handbuff would be weak but I think it's good as is. Gul'Dan feels more boring to me as an All-in Highroll kind of card, so I'd go for Garrosh.

@Anchorm4n: I agree that "no duplicates" might be a bit boring, but your second condition feels very similar to The Demon Seed, what if you did something weird like "no duplicate non-Demons," "All your Spells are Fel," "no Lifesteal cards," or "you've discarded 4 Demons"?

  • Hearthstone Mercenaries Support Ending, No More Regular Content Updates After 25.4

I will miss Mercenaries, especially the events.

Would love to know what Lessons Learned that Blizz thinks they gained from the mishandled, over hyped launch.

  • Hearthstone Mercenaries Support Ending, No More Regular Content Updates After 25.4

    Quote From Auspicious
    Quote From Zelgadis

Traditionally Blizzard games stood out in terms of polish, but that was missing from Mercenaries.

Let me put on my tinfoil hat and say that Blizzard was like Japanese industry of the 70's and 80's, taking existing material and improving it -- not creative or imaginative in a broad sense, but giving cliches and tropes that high-sheen polish that outshined the competition . . .

. . . and that changed after the buyout.

Blizzard was some combination of a) the management and b) the employees and both of those groups have changed lineups. It would have been surprising if things hadn't changed, tbh. But the old-school Blizzard that had so much good time management that their high-polished games had the time for the most random-ass easter eggs imaginable is way out of our rearview mirror.

Im not so sure we can pin that label on blizz's early years (prior to buyout).

The gaming sphere back in the 90s was mostly 2d side scrollers. If Im not mistaken warcraft 1 was the first really popular RTS made, and diablo 1 was pretty much the best, if not the first, game of that genre in the west. Blizz tends to innovate more often than copy.

The real reason for their success is because management wanted quality instead of quantity. They would've continued it too, if it weren't for a sudden shortsightedness on their management's part, and merged with activision. In hindsight any blizz fan would have call it bs, but back then when WoW was running high its likely they gambled that blizz would be the more successful of the two and eventually turn the tables.

Too bad. It could have been blizz-activision, managed by people that loves games, not its finance department. And now its gobbled up by an even more money-eyed taskmaster, its only a matter of time before blizz ceases to be.

  • A Hero's Tale - Card Design Competition Discussion Thread

    Quote From CursedParrot

Thrall, Elemental Master combines your Fire, Frost, and Nature spells into one school, making it so that every spell school synergy Shaman has works for all of their spells with those spell school. This is especially powerful with Wrathspine Enchanter and Radiance of Azshara, but the no duplicates rule should prevent an OTK deck from functioning. Overall, I think it might push the power envelope so maybe I should make it a battlecry affecting just the hand instead? Let me know if it seems too good.

I think this is fine, but what about "Start of Game: If your deck has no duplicates, your Fire, Frost, and Nature spells gain all three schools." I think that might be better wording; the "your" is important to avoid confusion with your opponent, and "become one spell school" could imply they're now all Fire, or all Frost, which isn't what you wanted. If you do change it to a Battlecry, you'll need to say "this game" at the end. Probably more balanced as a Battlecry.

Overall I like it more than the Valeera...not that there's anything wrong with her, but mixing the Shaman's spell schools creates really cool deck-building ideas whereas Valeera is just more of the same Thief package.

  • A Hero's Tale - Card Design Competition Discussion Thread

Here are my two ideas, I'm having trouble fitting the wording on four lines while making it consistent with hearthstone, but hopefully the effects should be clear:

Thrall, Elemental Master combines your Fire, Frost, and Nature spells into one school, making it so that every spell school synergy Shaman has works for all of their spells with those spell school. This is especially powerful with Wrathspine Enchanter and Radiance of Azshara, but the no duplicates rule should prevent an OTK deck from functioning. Overall, I think it might push the power envelope so maybe I should make it a battlecry affecting just the hand instead? Let me know if it seems too good.

For Valeera the Thief I wanted to print cool thief rogue support, as she has a rest of game effect that lets you play cards from other classes (the cards are temporary however so it doesn't give large amounts of value, and much of the time the card you get won't be ideal to play that turn or outright terrible, which balances the card). It also only starts on turn 5 or 6 at the earliest so it wouldn't break any other thief Rogue support cards like the Gnoll.

  • Hearthstone to Receive a Murloc Dragon Minion in the Upcoming Mini-Set, Return to Naxxramas?

This card was when I started yelling that giving Paladin these half-assed synergies was terrible and they needed dual-tribes to make the (terribly unthematic) archetypes work. Now you can run them but Paladin has better things to do. And y'know what? I'm kinda fine with that.

I was thinking about cool stuff the tribal overlaps could do with Divine Shield which pop up on the best Pally tribals, but then I thought about how awfully fast Wild is and concluded that the deck would be jank. :-/
