  • Ranking System is problemtic

I convinced a friend of mine to start playing Hearthstone some time ago and for the moment he prefers being Free-to-Play. He plays a basic mage deck and with my "help" we managed to get to rank 17. He is not new to cards games (we played MTG together) so he has a good understanding of the mechanics and such.

The problem is that as he gets a lot of wins, the algorithm matches him now with golden-portrait players with all-golden decks etc. He couldn't reach his Rank 15 goal, so I advised him to farm a bit in lower ranks, since he wishes to remain F2P for the time being. The problem actually got even worse at bottom ranks. Golden players farm wins and gold at these ranks apparently and ruin the experience for newer players. How are they going to love this game which treats them without respect? Would any of them stay or spend money to get bullied by dudes like them (trust me some of them are really toxic)? I do understand that as people play the game for longer and the skill cap of players get higher, we are going to see more and more of this.

Anyways, I believe that if anyone has been to Rank Legend or has over a certain amount of wins (1500+ wins lets say), the game should not let them drop under rank 15. Maybe if some of them have returned after a long time, there could be some "outs" for them. What do you think of this? If you were new to Hearthstone, would you invest any time, effort or money in a try-hard-looking, overpriced game like this?

EDIT: Apparently some clarification is much needed here. My friend is playing an almost all- basic Mage deck. Not just some basic net-deck. He started playing during summertime (a couple of months ago), so he didn't play consistently, meaning that his collection is non-existent. He ranked up from the first 30 ranks with ease and now faces the situation described above. He is not looking to win everyone he faces, but rather enjoy a card game and having something to discuss over while on break.

"Git gud" kind of commenters fail to see the real problem. Even being a "pro" at Hearthstone won't cut it here, since an under-developed F2P collection is as good as it gets. I think it makes sense that, one would remain F2P if got bullied by top-tier decks (or ditch the game entirely). Spending money to upgrade their collection would feel a bad investment on their behalf; I know I would, but thankfully I started years ago.

Golden players with complete collections farming that low, are a disgrace to the game and should be looked at more carefully by the developing team. That's the point I am making here: the matching system should not allow unfair matchmaking from happening in the first place and also try limiting the ranks in which old/pro/golden/2000+ win players can downgrade to. New players would lose their mind if those players prey upon them all the time. Would you return to the game after that? I don't think so..

  • The Pepper Thread - Share Some Good Vibes!

I finally did it. Today was my first time I killed The Lich King.

Now, I would like to clarify, that I'm not talking about the last boss in the Frozen Throne pve adventure. No, I'm talking about the 12th boss in ICC (Wotlk). I owned him in 10 nm. To some of you this might not even be something worth bragging about, as people are working hard to do icc 10 and 25 hc, but the feeling of reaching the lich king, killing him and getting the Kingslayer title was my main goal ever since I started playing WoW.

Okay so don't get me wrong, I really love the tombs of terror so far, but sometimes they suck at balancing highrolling heroic bosses. I just had one of the best decks I've ever had, but I faced Ozara as the second last boss (who has a hero power that summons a dust devil every time they play an overload card). I had the double legendary passive, I played double 2/6 on turn 2, double 3/3 pyros + 3/2 on turn 4 and double 4/3 zilliax on turn 5. I still lost because that fucking dipshit of a boss summoned 2-3 dust devils EVERY turn next to two tunnel troggs, two totem golems, two stormforged axes, two voltaic bursts, a lava shock and finished with a lightning bolt. Seriously how in the fuck is anyone supposed to beat that unless their deck is beyond totally busted? But yeah no I totally wasn't excited to fight the last boss with this awesome deck I spend all that time building up. Why not make ozara the last boss since this shit was 10x more insane than anything the plague lords can do.

Used to love AOE2, but I moved to civ 6 a few years ago, and have 0 regrets, I love modding and making more accurate civilizations that portray history (nazi Germany, early America, and early 1900 Nordic countries being my favourite mods atm)

  • 30 Cards or 60 Cards?

Tavern brawl yes, permanent mode no. Would say 40 cards decks it would be more interesting.

  • Aggro Burn Shaman

I swapped out one of the Unbounds for Vessina and it's felt really solid. She is so sick with a board full of 1/1s from Thunderhead; sometimes for going face, sometimes for clearing Taunts or trading to survive. Did you ever consider her for the list yourself?

  • 30 Cards or 60 Cards?

    Quote From Crusader2010

Speaking of game modes, i think the starting health of the heroes should be higher, not necessarily the number of cards in the deck. Or maybe a combination of the two. Having 60 starting health seems better than the 30 from now; double the fatigue damage too.

I know this can completely prevent aggro decks from working, but i'm tired of seeing them each and every expansion. There will likely be a new archetype to replace it. Also, don't mention the possibility of never running out of cards or gaining infinite armor - this is what the team of morons is choosing to bring into the game. They basically gimp their own design space with powercreeps and such.

If you double the standard health pool, it won't kill aggro, it'll just drastically alter what it means to be aggro. These new aggro decks wouldn't kill you by turn four and they wouldn't run as many 1-drops, but fundamentally they'd still try to punch you until you die in as few turns as possible. Control decks would become insanely greedy to balance the need to defend against these midrange "aggro" decks and still generate enough value to beat other control decks, and infinite damage combo decks would have a field day if present in the format.

A new balance of archetypes will always emerge and you might like it even less. Something something life finds a way.

I would be super excited for a nice RTS autumn with AoE2:DE and (hopefully) Warcraft III reforged, but I'll be damned if I'm switching to Windows 10 just for AoE2:DE. Microsoft is being a real asshole as a platform holder. Instead of trying to get their product in the hands of as many excited players as possible, they're essentially using it as yet another tool to try and coerce people to switch to this hellspawn of an OS. So no AoE2 for me, I guess.

Or, even better, use dual-boot like me: I have a laptop that has both Win 7 and Win 10. For oldschool games or watch videos/movies on Internet without hassle thanks to lowest amount of background processes and low bandwidth usage, I use Win 7. However, if you prefer modern features or play modern games, in our case: AOE2:DE, I prefer Win 10 thanks to Directx12 and other stuff.

  • 30 Cards or 60 Cards?

60 card mode? Sounds like a Control Warriors Paradise.

But seriously tho, i feel like it's a bit too much, perhaps a 40 or 45 card mode first. Sounds pretty cool tho. i often do feel like i can't fit everything i want into a deck. (Mainly when making a Wild deck)

I know this is an obvious salt post but still. Your solution will not only kill aggro, it will kill the entire game. What would happen if we were to remove scissors from the rock-paper-scissors equation? The game will become nothing but OTK vs OTK.

    Great suggestion (no).

    It's not that bad either..

I feel that Hunter as a class would need some disruption spells (if we want it to succeed as non-smorc class in the future), but thematically rogue fits the description better.

  • 6 Leeroy Jenkins OTK!

So... it's Maly Druid but lower damage output, can't hit through taunts and needs a Florist proc? :P

Incidentally, Crystal Power is really not good in Quest Druid (of any flavour). The two options are mutually incompatible, meaning AT BEST it's going to act like you didn't have your quest completed at all, and at worst it's going to be significantly worse than playing it without the quest completed. You're better off including Worthy Expedition to smooth out your curve and fish for the far more effective cards like Nourish, Surger or Loti.

  • The Forgotten Wilds of Hearthstone - The Darkness Calls for Knights and Dragons

I took some pleasure from this article in remembering old archetypes I'd forgotten. Tempo warrior was barely a thing, it was viable for maybe one expansion, but it was pretty fun while it lasted... And looking over the decklist took me back to those halcyon days when dropping a 3/5 on 3 was the most powerful turn 3 play in the game. It's still pretty damn good, I suppose, but only by Standard's standards (heh). Also had fun in the early days of Wild's release messing around with an endless swarm type of paladin, running Justicar, Murloc Knights, Recruit-buffing cards like Steward of Darkshire, plus some Mukla's.

Incidentally, rather than improving it, I would argue Anyfin was the card that killed Murloc Knight. Before it was a lynchpin of murloc Paladin; as soon as Anyfin was released, Paladin had access to an easy OTK by including only 2x Bluegill, 2x Warleader and 1x Murk-Eye. Adding any other murloc made Anyfin actively worse, so what little play the Knight had been seeing dried up.

Nope, no change. Still crash to desktop.

That's weird. For most of people, patch 2.7 really solved lots of issues. I'm sorry to hear that your problem hasn't been resolved. Even my FPS has been increased to 60 with all options enabled or maxed out. Using a laptop with Nvidia 940M graphics card integrated btw.

Also, nostalgia all the way ✌

Found my problem with Age of Mythology. Apparently, if you have it selected at the wrong display size or windowed mode, it crashes constantly. However, I didn't know about alt+enter mentioned in the video to force it to windowed mode to fix the resolution.

Did two of the Chinese missions so far and it didn't crash.
