Who is this?
West of the camp the trees have gone white. Not frost. Silk, laid down in sheets between the trunks over a single fortnight, thick enough to walk on and strong enough to hold a cart.
Mother Spindle made all of it and she is still making it. She is older than the woods she is wrapping and she has the patience of something that has never once needed to hurry. Her brood work the outer lines. She works the centre, and the centre is closer to the camp every night.
The tailors, to their credit, saw the opportunity before they saw the problem. Silk that strong is worth a great deal and it comes off her woods by the bale. All it costs is going in there and taking it.

Gourdon the Rotten
the pumpkin that would not stay carved
The Ooze came up through the pumpkin patch on the first night of October, and the patch answered it. Gourdon the Rotten is standing at the tree line with a field of grinning heads behind it, and the camp bell has not stopped ringing since sundown.
