Who is this?

The patch behind the camp had a good year. Too good. Members were still trading recipes for the harvest when the first green seeped up between the roots, and by morning every gourd in the field had a face nobody had carved.

Gourdon was the biggest of them and the only one that stood up. It does not speak. It does not need to. It walks the rows at dusk, and every pumpkin it passes splits open and follows, and the ones that fall get up again wearing somebody else's grin.

Cut it down and it comes back rounder. Burn it and the seeds pop and take root where they land. The camp has worked out that the only thing that helps is to keep hitting it until there is nothing left worth carving.

Gourdon came apart in the middle of the field and the grins went out one by one, all the way down the rows. What is left is seed and pulp and a green stain in the soil that nobody wants to touch. The harvest is ruined. The camp is not. Somebody has already started carving a wall out of the pieces.
