The Darkness: is it worth it?

This is the deck I am playing:

It's a Tempo/Burn kind of hybrid.

 

I can do fairly well against most meta decks, even top tiers, but I have problems with Reno decks.

It is possible I am just a bad player, and I am fairly bad at managing resources, but I doubt I can hold too much against lategame value.

My first solution was using Deathstalker Rexxar, but I found the card being quite marginal, and even against Reno, quite unreliable. Now, in my climb back to r5, I am seeing more Reno decks (together with a plethora of Mages).

So I was considering, should I craft The Darkness? How does the card perform in the meta?

I know it is historically, seen as a meme, but has anybody actually tried recently?

It wasted huge Tempo, but it also negates 20-29 healing from Reno Jackson, thus counting as Burn, in that context.

On paper, it could also be useful against cycle decks, such as Warlock (Paladin and Mage too, but their burn is the main problem there).

What do you think? Can you see better solutions, while staying in the same deck archetype (Even Hunter)?

      Definitely.

      In fact it'd be used as a tech card, mainly to avoid Reno Jackson.

      In that case, while wasting Tempo, it negates healing, thus counting as Burn.

  • The Darkness is a tech against Reno decks and against plot twist warlock or similar draw-a-lot-lock.

    It's good against them ONLY if they have a very bad starting curve, or in the late turns when you can play the darkness and something else togheter.

    Actually, as you are an aggro deck (I like even hunter, I have my version too) your first way to kill reno deck should be SMORC. This means that you either find and play the darkess in time, or it will be almost useless (you would win without him or they would have already played Reno). But as now there exist Zephyrs too, and other cards depending on the class chosen, I think that if you are REALLY surrounded by highlander decks you can try the darkness and see what happens.

  • If you want to mess with Reno decks as a Hunter you can try Wild Bloodstinger: if you use it properly it will rarely backfire and you'll gain a lot of tempo.

  • If you already owned the darkness I would say go ahead and try it out, but I would never craft the card just so you can test it as a tech against a single archetype. It is un-reliable because you have to 1. draw the darkness at just the right time, 2. they don't draw the candles, 3. they haven't already played reno, and 4. they need to play reno right now.

    The darkness is just utterly worthless against everything except for reno decks, and it won't even be useful in every game against reno decks. Most of the time it will hurt more than it will save.

  • nah, the card is just too bad. Even if you ran into only Reno decks it would still only pay off a fraction of the times at which point you're usually better off with a regular sm0rc strategy.

    This is a prime case of: "works on paper but not in practice"

  • I second Avalon's recommendation of Wild Bloodstinger. If you want a way to nullify their Reno Jackson without losing too much tempo and/or not hurting your other matchups severely then that card is by far the best (and probably the only) option.

    Tempo decks are generally unfavored against slow decks like reno because they can't pressure them hard enough early on. So even with a good tech you will still be fighting an uphill battle. Also, the only way you can have somewhat of a chance to win the late game agains them is with the inclusion of Deathstalker Rexxar.

    Not too sure about the idea of running a secret hunter list when nearly every deck is slotting in anti-secret tech because they're allergic to secret mages.

    Why are you running Eater of Secrets over Flare though? I'm not too sure secret tech is even necessary at this point with the lowered playrate of mage, but in a tempo deck 2 mana draw a card is less of a tempo loss than a 2 mana 2/4.

     

  • The Darkness is awful. Trust me, I had the misfortune of opening one. While the idea of shutting down Reno-synergies might sound appealing, if that's literally all the card does (you never draw the third candle, ever) it's not a very efficient way to spend four mana. I'd consider Hakkar over The Darkness as a neutral Reno-foil; at least it hoses Nomis and other draw-intensive decks as well. I'd even consider Seaforium Bomber + Augmented Elekk in this role, because if nothing else you're getting solid stats for your mana.

     

     

    In case I wasn't clear, The Darkness is really really terrible. Avoid like the plague.

    I guess i'll try the Bloodstinger again (it was an earlier inclusion), or i guess i'll simply stick with Shieldbreaker against turtling decks.
