Very excited for the new Switch as I'm looking forward to finally getting a Nintendo system again. I've been itching to replay some good old Ocarina of Time, Portal and other stuff that I don't get on my PS5, but knowing a new system was on the horizon has kept me from getting the current gen so far. Maybe this turns out to be the perfect Christmas gift to myself :D
As much as I like the idea of a meta shake up halfway between expansions, I've come to hate these mini sets. I can't remember the last time one of them didn't contain something absolutely broken that warped the game around it and needed fixing within a short span of time. First and foremost the poster boys come to mind: The Jailer, Thaddius, Yogg, Brann and to a lesser extent Mr. Smite, Kazakusan and Neptulon were clearly problematic cards from the moment they were revealed and Dorian is no different. The rest of the bunch usually contains a power outlier or two as well that more often than not proves to be nerf-worthy: Crabrider, Nitroboost Poison, Stealer of Souls, Grey Sage Parrot, Objection, Construct Quarter, Felscale Evoker. I've just scrolled through them and the percentage of cards that are staples in Wild decks is mindboggling.
tl;dr: the power level of mini sets is way too high and I don't like it.
Alright, mini set coming. At least we only need to deal with the current meta for likely another week or so. Here's my thoughts;
Gigantify - Probably not anywhere near as good as miniaturize, which if we have to be honest, isnt exactly making waves itself. So main problem to this keyword: its high cost makes it only really viable if it has taunt/rush, and its only really playable in midrange decks or otherwise decks that can afford to discount the costs.
Puppetmaster Dorian - Looks broken, especially with cards that tutor like caricature artist etc. But looking at the meta these days, I cant see a world where you wait until turn 8 with two cards in hand trying to scam a combo out, and not die in the process. That being said, mini set legendaries always tend to warp the meta around so Im fairly sure this card would be good, just not sure if it would stay good since its equally true most miniset legendaries tend to also get nerfed in their lifetime.
Puppet theater - The sort of card that would make you tear your hair off your scalp because it more or less means any strategy that involves a wincon attached to a minion will immediately be invalidated, unless the win comes immediately the turn after its played. The only mitigating circumstance I can see is the fact that this card virtually does nothing otherwise, so in most matches its fairly worthless.
Other cards perhaps not really that interesting. Snuggle bear looks okay, overgrown beanstalk is a build around card that may help drum druid but is perhaps too slow, and toyrantus is the sort of card that'll never see play.
I have an Android phone and use Chrome; haven't had an issue myself. What happens when you attempt to reply? Does it kick you down to the bottom of the page? That's a known issue - you have to scroll back up to where you were attempting to reply, and the text box will be there.
Kinda annoying, I won't lie, but it's on the to-do list to fix. Overhauling the forums and message system was always going to come with issues and annoyances; we just need to iron them out!
I think it's great that Cora has been willing to share fun little behind the scenes bits for Hearthstone and hope it continues. I'm really wondering what art in the mini-set is a continuation of a story though and it's "messed up".
In hearthstone I do love a good attack cry. Any voice acting really, when they nail it, makes a game for it. Those quotable lines are the best. Special shout out to thsoe 0 attack minions that get a buff and go! "Did I miss it" is porbably my favorite from Doomsayer. Sound design overall is a powerful thing. Anyone who's played any Deadspace knows the boot stomp sound. So satisfying. Heck I could click the hearthstone board for days. Just that little sound is great. Probably anoy anyone else who can hear it, but like clicking a pen it's just amusing to do.
Outside of sound, I love environmental effects. Let me blow up property, knock down a tree or whatever. Nothing better than setting up your dominos in game and watching them fall "exactly" how you planned.
I haven't gone back to Hearthstone yet and as time passes it becomes less likely that I will.
I have started on Eldritchvania, which as the name suggests is a metroidvania with Lovecraftian elements. It seems very much inspired by La Mulana, but the lore is easier to follow due to clearer writing and a lore fragments interface that is auto-ordered and has infinite capacity. This is important, because both in this game and La Mulana, many essential puzzle clues come from lore fragments. It's pretty good, especially for a free game. It's not easy though; if the difficulty ramps up more, I'm not sure I'll stick with it until the end.
I'm also doing a round of Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor every now and then. It's still fun, but I am at a point where progression slows down, so I'm not doing one run after another anymore.
Today a Stellaris expansion released and the first reviews on Steam are pretty positive, so I'll likely jump back into that.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that our BG3 co-op is still going strong, approaching the end of act 2 now.
About $1400 in 10 years. Some of it was gifts to other people, but I've also bought a significant number of keys on Humble and Fanatical that are not included. I do have a tendency to buy more games than I have time to play, but at least financially it's not out of control.
Co-op favorites in our group: Zombicide Black Plague (hack your way through undead hordes), The Siege of Runedar (dwarves defending a gold mine; max 4 players unfortunately), Mansions of Madness (solve Lovecraftian horror mysteries).
Flamecraft ("dragon placement") is an accessible and very cute game that can handle 5 players.
7 Wonders (civilization building via card drafting) is great with many players (up to 7) because turns happen simultaneously, so it doesn't slow down much with larger player counts. Similarly, Libertalia (pirates on a plunder tour) can be played with 6 players and is partially simultaneous.
Terraforming Mars is an engine builder, so it might appeal to the Wingspan fans, but it is longer and a bit more complex.
Oh, and I agree with the recommendation of The Crew (either variant). Some people don't enjoy the pressure of mistakes dooming the mission though, so it does depend on the group. I'd recommend giving it a try online via BoardGameArena and buy the box if it fits your group.
I feel sorry for the developers. Redfall flopped, but Hi-Fi Rush made it on to a lot of game of the year lists. And in the case of Redfall, it seems it was another victim of trend chasing (everything must be a multiplayer live service) instead of letting the studio do what it was good at (single player games with a strong story). Also it didn't help that it was released before it was properly finished. I hope the developers find a new workplace that respects their talent more.
Delayed Product might be the most cursed card artwork we've seen yet. Is that unicorn being... slowly liquified?
Return of Control Priest? Control decks have generally not existed in Standard at the moment because of Reno Warrior, but maybe with Puppet Theatre, you can get your own Boomboss, copy it with Pip the Potent? Probably just die to aggro then, though.
Indeed! Pretty neat to see them expand the set that way. Not sure how I feel about more 8 mana 8/8s but bringing back the Un'Goro Pack mechanic as other packs is really cool and a great way to continue paying respect to the game's history.

Kinda! You still have to watch for which box you're replying with. I don't know the intricacies of the forums; it's a mysterious system lol

Card draw for treant druid is kinda scary. On the other hand, Druid has more than enough drawing anyway.

Toyrantus is a great name and glad to see Dorian back in action with his creepy dolls.
Gigantify is a nice twist on Miniaturize mechanic. While it's probably worse overall, can't wait to see what they do with it.

Love Soul Mirror so Funhouse Mirror seems amusing.
The Theatre looks fun too in the right meta.

Is this the first time they've added new mechanics to a mini-set? Two new(-ish) mechanics I guess.
