  • The Leviathan is a New Legendary Paladin Card Revealed by Terra Game On for Voyage to the Sunken City

    Both cards have:

    • 4 attack
    • Rush
    • Divine Shield

And that's the main thing Cariel does. It deals 4 to an enemy minion and leaves behind a body. This card does that, twice.

The spell discount is just an added bonus effect. Cariel is played in many Paladin decks that run only a few spells. The Leviathan has Dredge + draw 1 as a bonus, which is significant in every deck.

  • The Leviathan is a New Legendary Paladin Card Revealed by Terra Game On for Voyage to the Sunken City

    Why it's a bad card?

This deals 8 damage, this takes cares of two threats or one big dude and leaving two bodies at the end, besides drawing something that you might  want from the bottom of your deck, something to play right away, if you have the mana, or something for the next turn.

This is a big tempo swing, for 7 mana imho.

  • Top 5 things that would make Hearthstone better

    Quote From HuntardHuntard

If that reasoning was as valid as you thought it was, then the squelch feature shouldn't exist at all because it would deprive emote spammers from deciding to emote reasonably, thus ruining their experience. All while subjecting poor Timmy who just got out of class to 20+ Anduin wow emotes. Whose experience should be protected in the first place?

The point of that arguement was not to say that the enjoyment of 1 player should be put above the one of the other, but that a auto squelch feature would also block players whos behaviour might not even bother you, which results in less social interaction for both players. Think of the following scenario:  You are a player who generally like small interactions with your opponents (greetings, well played, sometimes wow etc.), but also gets annoyed rather quickly.

Ideally you face players with the same preferences as you, have fun with him and move on.

Then you face a player who uses too many emotes, in which case you squelch him. So let's say that this squelch would now also apply to all other players until you unsquelch someone. Or you meet another one of these guys in the next game and get so annoyed that you enable the auto-squelch. The point is, you activated it now.

You play a couple more games, don't get annoyed anymore and go to sleep.

Then on the next day you will most likely have forgoten that you activated the auto squelch. You continue playing the game, don't get annoyed by anyone and are fine with it. But here's the catch: You might have met a player with the same preference as you during your matches, but you never interacted with him because you never saw any of his friendly emotes. The "have fun with him" part never happened, even though it could have. And that's the thing that directly influences other players in a negative way.

This would discourage your opponent from trying to use emotes in this match, and in the long term in every match too if he meets more players that don't respond, wether intentional or not (like in this example). Because why bother if no one responds? This eventually would all lead to 2 types of players: The ones who have auto-squelch active, and the ones who don't even bother emoting, because they think they are playing against someone who uses auto-squelch even if they don't. This would obviously be the worst case, but the point is that auto-squelch does not only effect you.

This is nothing like Cariel Roame, Cariel discounts spells, this draws cards, and in many cases something that you might want.

The only similarity is that both have rush and divine shield.

It is interesting how heavy, and power hungry, they decided to be on 7-mana slot in this expansion, and we havent even seen all the cards.

Not a bad card. Doesn't have the same WOW factor of the other Colossals, but 7 mana deal 4 twice and draw a card, while leaving two bodies on board, is nothing to scoff at. If you Dredged before playing this, you can also attack with your claw first then Dredge some more.

    Really weird reveal, though.

  • The Leviathan is a New Legendary Paladin Card Revealed by Terra Game On for Voyage to the Sunken City

This is like 2 Cariel Roames in one card, but 1 mana cheaper and it draws, seems pretty good as a way to fight back the board.

  • The Leviathan is a New Legendary Paladin Card Revealed by Terra Game On for Voyage to the Sunken City

There will probably be some reduce mech cost cards. Reducing this to 6 or 5 mana would make it a lot more playable.

  • The Leviathan is a New Legendary Paladin Card Revealed by Terra Game On for Voyage to the Sunken City

Basically what this card does is it allows you to go Tracking for one card down your deck.

The best part about this card is that both sides have divine shield and will do a total of 8 attack without taking damage, and assuming you're doing it right you'll draw a card which you discovered from the bottom of your deck.

Will probably see play, mostly because Im sure there's a mech archetype somewhere. But its definitely not on the level of nellie, crabatoa, or xhilag.

Hmmm.. not super impressed compared with some of the other colossal minions, but paladin will need new draw tools with some of the other packages rotating and the dredge mechanic does give a targeted draw.

EDIT: i guess the more i look at it, I have decided it's pretty good. You get removal of 2 small or midsized threats or one big threat, 2 minions left on board and targeted draw.  That's a lot going on for one card.

  • Hooktusk and the depth of HS character design

With the reveal of Pirate Admiral Hooktusk being one of the most flavourful cards I can think of, I thought it would be nice to step back from card power, tilt-factors and meta-relevance to focus on an aspect of the game everyone agrees is great: theme and flavour. Since Hooktusk was probably my favourite character in all of HS already (and because I have 2 weeks off work and a ton of time to kill) it felt fitting to do a deep dive on the character and appreciate all the little details the HS team put in.

All are welcome to point out what I missed, or show their own appreciation for their own HS character... in far fewer words I expect.

    Her visual design (original card)

    Show Spoiler

The HS-original pirates are an eccentric bunch. Skycap'n Kragg comes in flying a giant parrot, wielding a lance with a hook on the end, and cramming a few extra 'r's in the charge keyword (kicking off a trend that continues in pirate cards to this day). Then Patches the Pirate gets fired as a cannon ball onto the field, wearing more eye patches than most organisms have eyes, and originally having another eye pun in his attack voiceline. Both are perfect examples of HS whimsy done right. Indeed, Kragg's appearance in the TGT trailer was practically the original statement that HS no longer follows WoW lore closely. (The irony of course being that he was later made canon in WoW.)

Captain Hooktusk's eccentricities are a bit more subtle, and aren't defining features so much as clues to her personality. Between her portable cannon, her ridiculous belt anchor beneath a shark emblem, her obnoxiously elaborate and bright pink hair, and of course, the hooks on her tusks, we immediately know she's not interested in hiding in the shadows like most rogue characters. She's here to be noticed, with enough flair to overshadow her contemporaries in RR - which is impressive given the set's whole theme was showmanship.

She's also flexing pretty hard that she can carry a cast iron cannon with one hand while the other juggles a cannonball like its nothing. Coupled with that grin, it's a really disconcerting mix of playful and threatening. Finally, she's happy with a low cut shirt revealing cleavage. Unlike Jaina, I get the feeling Hooktusk would actually seek to exploit that feature, and if you told her to cover up she's gladly fire that cannon at you.

Luckily, RR gave us a couple of images of Hooktusk in action too. She's swinging around in Cannon Barrage and rappelling with her crew in Raiding Party. Again, there's no stealth here. It's all show and would be a joy to watch… so long as she isn't coming for you.

    Her personification

    Show Spoiler

When we factor in her various voicelines, she goes from an awesome deign to an instantly lovable character. Consider her entrance voiceline: “Cheatin’?! I never fight fair!” This is not some generic “For the Horde”-esque entrance. No. She’s clearly just been accused of cheating and says the “Cheatin’?!” as though insulted. Not because it isn’t true - she immediately admits she always cheats - but because she’s amazed they even needed to point it out.

Add in her Rumble Run voicelines, and we develop her cheating ways further: as the fight starts she says “I’ll fight fair. Dis time. Promise.”… She doesn't. Obviously. Her responses to her shrine dying add to her little mind games. While everyone else gets cross or worries how to proceed, she says things like "Ya think that's a good idea?", making poor Rikkar (the player's character) question whether he made a terrible mistake. Other times she'll just pass it off with "Eh. It was just a distraction anyways." Whether she actually thinks that or not is entirely unclear to us, and there's nothing more dangerous than an enemy you don't understand.

A personal favourite is when you threaten her, and she replies with "Bwa-haha. Oh… you were serious?" She's just having fun mocking you. But she knows to be serious when she needs to be. Emote her in Tamsin's chapter of the Book of Mercs and she'll reply with "Loose lips sink ships." Which demonstrates her playful demeanor is a facade hiding a mind that knows exactly what she's doing. Kind of like a more playful Jack Sparrow, which is high praise.

To top it off, her voice actress does a stellar job. Writing quotes down is one thing, but you really need to listen to them to truly appreciate them.

    Updates to her visual design

    Show Spoiler

New card, new promotion, and new look. Kind of. Pirate Admiral Hooktusk looks mostly the same with significantly bulkier arms. Presumably since she's been swimming a lot more lately. Admittedly the extra bulk made it more plausible she was going to be a warrior card, which would have sucked for me personally. I'm glad that didn't happen.

There are more subtle changes that are probably more important: her ponytail now ends with a shark tail like shape; and when she's underwater (see the Sunken City trailer and the minion art, but not art for the Plunder options) she has light blue stripes (likely representing gills) on her arms and a dorsal fin like shape behind her head. I suspect these are visual representations of Gral's power letting her swim fast and breathe underwater. If so, that's a pretty cool bit of character progression.

Her eyes might also have white goggle-like barriers over them underwater. That's what it looks like in the trailer, but I haven't seen a high enough resolution image of the card to tell there.

    Her new card design

    Show Spoiler

Her first card, Captain Hooktusk, won me a lot of games (yes, despite it being an 8-mana card in an aggessive deck), and I get the flavour: her opponent thinks she's alone for a fair fight, only to get jumped by her crew. So she's cheating thematically, but mechanically… not so much. She turned up at a time recruit was still in Standard, so it felt well within the rules of the game, and hence took me a while to work out what the flavour was.

The new Pirate Admiral Hooktusk is much clearer on the matter. Two of her options were utterly ruled out in the early days of HS, and even if a couple of similar effects have existed since, it is absolutely going to feel like cheating when it is done to you. But it's flavourful cheating. She's always stealing something. She's boarded your ship, tied up the crew, and is making off with the goods. Furthermore, they actually call back to her Treasure from Below shrine in Rumble Run, which is just so fitting here.

The art depicts this story beautifully, using the option 'cards' to go beyond the power pose of the base minion and show what happened after she burst into Faelin's ship. It didn't go well for him, Finley or Ini (I think that's the name of the female mecha gnome). Poor Ini is faced with Hooktusk pointing the cannon at her and juggling a cannonball, calling back the the original RR card and showing she actually does that outside of a photo shoot.

I don't think any other card has been able to tell the story surrounding the base artwork so well, especially not in so self-contained a way. I hope they find ways to do this sort of thing again in future. There must be so many little stories to tell this way that we'd never know if we only get single snapshots.

    Misc stuff

Now we're here, it is clear Hooktusk was added to Tamsin's Book of Mercs chapter to softly re-introduce the character before she made a bigger appearance in Sunken City. However you feel about the Book of Mercs, it's neat to retroactively see the thought that went into them.

Now I've done this for Hooktusk, I feel kinda guilty for not paying more attention to a lot of cards. I'm sure there's a lot to find in them!

  • 2 Bugs: Equilibrium and Task 18

Today I did a heroic Balinda run to finally unlock her. First thing: my Brightwing had a Equilibrium treasure that gave +2 to Nature and Fire. But BWs skill did get no buff! It still did 9 instead of 11. I can provide a screenshot of this but this is on my mobile and I have to reactivate my imgur account. Chi-Ji on the other hand also haf an Equilibrium (the one with heal power) but it didn't affect any skill, too (no screenshot).

Second: during the run I got Samuro task 18. 450 damage to heroic bosses. After the Balinda fight it was at 355/450. No screenshot of this because I did not thought it would be relevant. But trust me I chose Barrens-1 deliberately because there is a 40 and a 60 health boss. I double checked wether its over 350. And because I am making more damage than the health total (like 10 hp left, 20 critical dmg) I am on the safe side. Right? No, I ended up with 441/450? Can anyone explain this? I have a screenshot after the bounty

Iksar said that a tournament mode comes up ever so often, but one of the problems for designing it is that many players have different expectations for how such a mode would work. I personally also doubt the popularity of that, since casual players (99% of the playerbase) probably won't care too much about it. Also there were people who wanted a more hardcore version of the Dungeon runs and Duels has a pretty stable playerbase.

Also a side note: no one asked for a digital WoW cardgame, yet here we are.

    2.

2v2 was actually one of the original Ideas that ended up becoming Mercenaries.

""We started with a handful of pitches and ideas to explore,” he explains. “One of the things that gets asked about from the community, and that the team is passionate about trying to figure out, is some form of 2v2, and that was actually one of the original pitches. But as we went through, we settled on… character progression, roguelike RPG [elements]… as the thing that we wanted to add to Hearthstone."

    3.

Probably not worth the dev ressources. Dynamically adding and changing rules would not only be rather hard to program, but the UI for this would also be pretty overloaded(especially on mobile), which is something they always try to avoid. It also wouldn't really add anything to the game that hasn't been there before with Tavern Brawls and would probably end up being played even less. Also giving players the ability to play with every card in their deck for free would probably negatively impact their sales.

    4.

Sure, cheaper deals are always nice but... Why would they lower the prices? The game obviously already makes a ton of money and if their data would show that making they bundles cheaper would increase the overall income they would have already done that. You also don't have to buy every pre-order, even if you are not f2p. Buying both expansion pre-orders is also (in my opinion) overkill anyways and the mini-sets are best of being bought with gold and a great deal on top of that. Sure that's still a ton of money and worth 3-4 tripple A games, however you also (hopefully) get a year long of fun out of it. Or you just go f2p

    5.

Arena never realy was a popular mode even when they did regular changes (also remember the Arena event? I feel old now), so I don't see any reason why that would be different nowadays, especially since there are so many more options now. Also they already do ban cards. I'm not saying that they won't do any changes to it in the future, but that those won't make it "one of the best modes" for the majority of the playerbase.

I don't get year long fun out of paying 315 dollars. It's actual robbery they don't care that people spend whole paychecks on the game. I can't afford to spend all this money on the game but I do anyways because I like it to an extent

I mean, they kinda made it work. Their 2v2 mode basically had minimal interactions between the players (as in both players play normal 1v1 matches and you choose a buff every couple rounds and the other player got the other options), but that's probably not what you or other players have in mind when they talk about 2v2. Apparently LoR players neither since it got removed a couple months after the launch and had pretty long que times from what I have heard.

YGO Pro has a great 2v2 system though. I agree the runeterra one was lack luster but it was coo

I feel like the people complaining about how soft everyone has become are much more sensitive than the people requesting an auto squelch.

When platforms like instagram ban/auto report people for saying non-profanity words like "ew" "hypocrite" "woman" "weird" the problem is not people complaining about soft people.

Video games like League of Legends banning people for saying literally anything negative in the slightest. It makes the game unplayable.
