Don't shoot the player for using tools that were provided to them. Constructive feedback about problems goes a long way =)

I've made a correction to our recap. Previously it stated that the theoretical "purchase a wild expansion outright" content would be disenchantable. This was a typo. This content, if it ever existing in the form that Dean spoke about, it would not be disenchantable.

    Sorry about that!

  • Dean Ayala's Hearthstone Community Q&A #26 - Warlocks in Wild, Tradeable, Magnetic, New Battlegrounds Systems Next Year

    • Meta still changing. Our goal isn't to have 50% win rates across the board. It's ok if power and population fluctuates over time, we step in to change outliers or in situations where we think the meta is about to take a negative turn or never change

So uh....what is the goal there TeamFive?

Making that statement is almost a bit infuriating...like if he had said "our goal is to create parity between the classes and get them as close to 50% winrate as we can, but we can't always guarantee that with every expansion." Then I would have been fine.  But seriously this is slightly annoying.  If it's a matter of resources, then they need to hire more people to help with balancing and ACTUALLY testing cards.

I know people like to meme about blizzard being "small indie", but the reality is: I expect some bugs and balance issues on any patch/nerf/buff.  That's just regular software design, nothing can change that no matter what size company you are. (And if you actually think differently, you're naive and/or you never worked for a software company.)  But sometimes these balance issues are so egregious it makes you wonder how it got past QA and internal playtesting.

  • Future Balance

Now that the meta has settled down which cards do feel need adjustment? Here is my personal list.

Sivir: I don't understand why they buffed Sivir in first place she was a fine champion before, now she level very quickly and when she do she can give a whole board spellshield, double attack or elusive which is game over against any deck expect plunder. Even without a board she can push for frighting amount of damage if you have Ghost and Flurry of Fists.

Merciless Hunter: This is a card that I like quit a bit because it forces all those back row champions into combat, still it has premium stat line, one the best keywords and the ability to grant any unit vulnerable, all of that definitely makes her overturned. I do hope that they can nerf her without making her unplayable because card that force combat makes the game more interactive.

Emperor's Dais: After so many nerfs Azir/Irelia finally went from broken BS into... tier 1, that should tell how powerful the deck was. The deck is definitely manageable now. Still turn 2 dais into turn Azir followed by any blade dance unit will usually allow them to snow ball the game before the opposition could do anything about it, so dais going to 3 would disrupt that curve and allow for more counterplay.

Twin Disciplines: Many players were asking for this card to be buffed and as the old saying goes, be careful what you wish for. The card allow you to push for damage, secure trad, protect your unit from removal at a very cheap price but the most frustrating part is how elusive aggro deck can abuse this card, normally in exchange for their ability to close the game quickly aggro are supposed to be vulnerable to removal and trading. both weakness are negated by twin disciplines, and let's get into how this card make something like Lee Sin and eye of dragon even more difficult to deal with.

Lee Sin and Eye of the Dragon: I decided into put them in same same spot because they are part of the same deck and have the same issue. Any time a good burst speed spell get's made you can count on these two to abuse it. As soon as turn 3 you can have two eye of the dragon on the board by playing the first and tutoring the second from the deck using Gifts From Beyond into Crescendum triggering their effect immediately allowing the player to stall indefinitely until a level up Lee Sin came in to close the show.

So what do you guys think? And more importantly what cards would like to see adjusted?

  • People keep conceding when I have the Sword of a Thousand Truths

In a meta where most of my games are against awful to play against decks, I find it hard to want to be nice to anyone. I think my current attitude toward the game is best described as "hate-playing", where I have no real fun and just grimly try to finish a few quests.

  • People keep conceding when I have the Sword of a Thousand Truths

    Quote From meisterz39

I'll probably try it again eventually, but these achievements that rely on your opponent being thoughtful are all a huge nuisance.

This is why I think achievements in games are generally a bad thing.  The first achievements as I recall from XBOX "gamerpoints" were first thought to have some indication of skill.

Just my 2 cents, but I honestly think gaming would be better off without achievement hunting.

  • Battleground questions

never cared too much about BG, But now I want to give a try. A couple of questions

    1) can I sell a minion in my possession (how?) or just the ones in the battleground?

    2) Is there any way to remove a minion from battleground, without selling it?

    thanks

  • People keep conceding when I have the Sword of a Thousand Truths

+1 to trying to get this done in Duels. There was a "12 win" duels deck posted on this site a few days back (linked below) that makes it pretty easy to get the sword in Duels.

That said, I tried it and got the sword in the first game but had to first attack a taunt minion. My opponent conceded before I could get a lethal swing in. I'll probably try it again eventually, but these achievements that rely on your opponent being thoughtful are all a huge nuisance.

  • Rewards Track: Current progress 3.0

I just reached level 79. My Stormwind achievements progression is at 98% and I only have the Spam Caller achievement (62/75) left to complete.

Current Demon Hunter wins: 809 (+69).

I am looking forward to collect another two T1 and T2 hero portraits in roughly two more weeks. I wonder which ones I should choose this time though?

How is the meta treating you all after the recent nerfs?

  • People keep conceding when I have the Sword of a Thousand Truths

I have to say I was guilty of this for one game. My opponent had the nuts draw in wild as Quest Priest, where he was able to equip the weapon by turn 5. It was so frustrating that I conceded out of spite. Not my proudest moment :P

  • Dean Ayala's Hearthstone Community Q&A #26 - Warlocks in Wild, Tradeable, Magnetic, New Battlegrounds Systems Next Year

I do the same, or at most wait until Crystallizer turns up and guarantees I have no chance. I don't see much point in trying when 10 (and often more thanks to Raise Dead) of the 21 damage they have to do to themselves is completely free. Add in the rewards from the first 2 parts of the questline and they've effectively only lost 5 health over the whole process! Its rare I'm playing a deck that can deal 25 damage in 6 turns, even in the best case scenario, so it would be a waste of time even bothering

I know the devs design cards for Standard and only really consider Wild insofar as they try to avoid adding more fuel to the decks already at the top, but I wish they accounted for the past more often. The Demon Seed might have been an OK idea early on in the game's lifetime, but things we've had since have made that region of design space too dangerous to use now.

  • Dean Ayala's Hearthstone Community Q&A #26 - Warlocks in Wild, Tradeable, Magnetic, New Battlegrounds Systems Next Year

I auto concede when Lock drops T1 quest in wild. Maybe enough of that will prompt faster action since they mentioned the high rate of similar concedes when nerfing priest a few months ago.

I appreciate the work the devs have put in, either way. Balance isn't an easy task and the process is so much better recently.

  • Dean Ayala's Hearthstone Community Q&A #26 - Warlocks in Wild, Tradeable, Magnetic, New Battlegrounds Systems Next Year

Warlocks may see some minor adjustments in the future.

Oh boy, I am so excited that nearly confirms a nerf for Flesh Giant from 9 to 10 mana. Quest Warlock will be so dead in Wild! (kappa)

I am so glad Blizz cares about this format! -.-

  • Dean Ayala's Hearthstone Community Q&A #26 - Warlocks in Wild, Tradeable, Magnetic, New Battlegrounds Systems Next Year

The issue with that blanket approach is that not all the Mercenaries actually need it. If you change Guff to 7 mana he goes from niche to worthless. Cariel slows down so much it wouldn't even be worth playing the deck anymore, because by the time you get to create your 3/3s, opponents have had enough time and mana to set up and to outpace your 1-drop deck that they'll easily keep your hero power under control from that point on. Same mostly goes for Rokara, Scabbs and Brukan. By the time these came online the deck would already be out of fuel and the value provided by these cards would not be enough to bring the game back around. Really, the issue is only with a handful of these quests, primarily Warlock, Hunter and to some extent, Mage. Nerfing all the questlines just for the sake of thematic consistency wouldn't make sense. It's a much better option to tweak the requirements on these quests so that yeah, Tamsin still costs 5, but you're NEVER playing her on 5.

  • People keep conceding when I have the Sword of a Thousand Truths

Finishing this in duels as priest is relatively easy, since the health pool is smaller and priest can easily just kill all the boars themselves. Just be quick to aim at face so even if they concede the achievement will still come up if you're fast enough. Got mine there myself.

  • Dean Ayala's Hearthstone Community Q&A #26 - Warlocks in Wild, Tradeable, Magnetic, New Battlegrounds Systems Next Year

Hitting the conditions is good enough. If you reach the final reward you should be rewarded with a good board swing, and 5 mana is fine, not too high or too low. Besides which putting it to 7 mana will likely just make it Mutanus chow.

The key is that there are three reward tiers, so even if it takes till turn 10 that should be reasonable considering the power level of the reward. At present its really just completed too fast, otherwise the quests decks are relatively balanced.

Perhaps in the midset we'll get something that resets the quest counter or just flat out prevents it from progressing while the minion is still alive. That might be an interesting set of disruption.

  • Dean Ayala's Hearthstone Community Q&A #26 - Warlocks in Wild, Tradeable, Magnetic, New Battlegrounds Systems Next Year

An idea I was thinking about to "balance" all quests would be to simply increase the cost of all Mercenary Minions to 7 mana. Ofc this wouldn't impact DH that much as they only care about the cost reduction from the first 2 rewards, but for every other class, it could be a good change.

  • Rewards Track: Current progress 3.0

I'm at level 53, and the level 50 legendary that I got was Auctioneer Jaxon. I knew it would be a crap one. I KNEW IT. Ugh.

I'm mostly on achievement-completing mode right now. I recently completed the "Claws Out" one for Druid, playing an Odd Quest Druid in Wild that somehow had a decent win rate.

I'm also trying to complete the "Share Your Pain" achievement for Warlock wherein I have to redirect damage to myself to the enemy hero using Blightborn Tamsin, but unfortunately, my games don't even need Tamsin to win. I played 10 games with Quest Handlock, and I only managed to complete the questline ONCE. The Big Warrior that I faced conceded the second I got Tamsin. I won a lot of games so that's a nice consolation, but unfortunately this is a sad reflection of the current meta. With Mages out of the way, Warlocks are running roughshod.

  • Dean Ayala's Hearthstone Community Q&A #26 - Warlocks in Wild, Tradeable, Magnetic, New Battlegrounds Systems Next Year

He describes exactly what warlock is in wild by explaining what extremely negative experience is and then says Warlock will get minor changes in the future LOL
