  • Top Secret - Card Design Competition Discussion Thread

    Quote From shaveyou

Somehow, with half the world shut down, I seem to have less time than ever.

Anyway, my first couple of ideas:

With Coup de Grace, I can appreciate looking for a different kind of trigger but this is kind of messy. The enemy is being punished for losing one of their own minions, so the tactic to beat this Secret is to not trade and go face? Seems weird.

I like Saving Grace's flavor, and I prefer it over Coup de Grace, but I wonder if people would tolerate another Ice Block-esque Secret (even one touted as being "more fair"). Its usage will probably be the same - stalling for some kind of Combo deck - and now you can do that for just 1 mana. You can overpower Saving Grace, so that's good, but I can still sense the potential saltiness.

For Wild, much to my own chagrin, I did Mage with Open the Waygate.  I cracked and Evocation and I just had to use it.  IT's worked wonders for me in Wild... even though I feel like part of my soul has chipped off.

I refuse to do that. Doesn't help that I don't have the quest or the mana giants, though.

Odd DH was working fine but stopped working at diamond 3 too. The loss of Albatross was gross.

Elusives eat your heart out. This is what I was worried about, Elusives getting stronger with Set 2. This might make them overwhelming.

I think printing more cards *might* work, but 1) that may dilute the region fantasy/theme.  and 2) It might make matters worse printing all these niche cards to counter other cards to counter other cards.  IMO keeping the core game simple is necessary because if the core game just prints a ton of cards instead of making balanced core regions, then the game is going to quickly spiral out of control into an unorganized mess.

For what it's worth, I agree that more regions and cards may dilute the individual region fantasy/theme, but that's yet another problem that Riot has set up for themselves. MTG has never added a color, and Hearthstone only just added its first new class after years and years. There's a lot of risk of diluting the design space, but oh well, Riot has been pretty clear they want to take that risk.

Personally speaking, I've always adored Face Hunter and winning games in the lowest number of turns possible.

I left Heartpwn for good when OoC launched. Run away and don't look back. This place is full of good people, and is ran by people who actually care about this game and the community. And Flux and Co. listen to your feedback, and implement good suggestions (very quickly).

This, TBH, why stick around an old site when the people who made it great start up a fresh new location?

I've been playing a version of Bomb Warrior that has been kicking the hell out of Demon Hunter and Warlock decks, and to an extent Rogue as well.  Anything that lets them draw and draw, it just beats up for the most part.

Another time I got banned was for saying how Galakrond Shaman players were worse than Hitler! I found it funny but I see the errors of my ways and will barely at all do that here.

I embraced the darkness and finished my Legend grind with Secret Mage. I swapped to it from Odd Demon Hunter after the nerfs at diamond 2 and fell back to diamond 4 so it didn't start too well either. I also had some zero progress days but then breezed through the last 5-6 games in win streak (mostly because my opponents weren't drawing well) so I guess my cliche-ic advice is stick to a deck even if it sometimes looks it's going nowhere. Cubelock was a horror matchup for me so I'd imagine it's also very capable of doing the thing.

  • Genn Greymane and the Demon Hunter

Well yeah, that's what makes it good. The trade-off is that it has a weak effect. I don't understand how it can be too efficient when their attack cards are all balanced around them having a 1 mana hero power. Like, do you just want all their cards to suck?

Does anybody know of a good deck to climb with in wild? I have tried Secret Mage, Odd Warrior, Cubelock, Odd Demon Hunte, even a homebrewed Spiteful Hunter but I haven't been able to get past Diamond 2. It feels like any deck I play is able to win against half of my matchups, but loses really bad to the other half. I am now at Diamond 3 with 1 star and I am afraid of falling all the way back to rank 5.

  • Group Therapy! Need to blow off some steam? Mega salty? Here's the place!

I've just been super trolled by  myself by reading a card wrong... I was In a mirror match Secret Galakrond Rogue, and at the end of the match, the opponent finished me off, w/ eviscerate.

    That should be OK, but...

A few rounds earlier I played Spellbender thinking it would protect me from a face spell.

After the match, I went to read the secret text and it clearly says: "When an enemy casts a spell on a MINION, summon a 1/3 as the new target."

I'm disappointed and ashamed, but moslty salty.

  • Genn Greymane and the Demon Hunter

    Quote From MurlocAggroB
    Quote From KANSAS

Even if your hero power provides a lot of synergy with your deck, you should still focus more on playing cards than just "hitting the button"

I mean, Demon Hunters play more cards than Priests. Like 90% of Priest games are nothing and hero power on the first 4 turns.

I don't know what your point is. Demon Hunters never just hit the button unless they have spare mana. They use the button to push tempo by clearing minions or empowering their spells and weapons. They build tempo by playing cards first. They have to play cards for their hero power to be useful. 1 attack is utterly unimpactful unless their other cards got them ahead.

I don't think I illustrated my point very well. I don't like Demon Hunters hero power because it is too easy to use, and it is too efficient with cards like Satyr Overseer and Glaivebound Adept. A 1 mana Hero Power makes it too easy to round out your turns and avoid having any wasted mana. It feels like they are always playing with Genn, only without the deck building restriction.

  • New Lackey Zoo [4/20 Nerfs]

He provides the needed stats to what would otherwise be crappy 1-drops that are supposed to be beefy and getting Rushed out with our Magic Carpet (or just being a neussiance in their own right)

I'd just run the Shieldbearer version if you can't craft.

Totally agree. Libram Paladin was a new archetype for once with a different mechanic and what do we get? Bloody Murlocs... again...

  • Genn Greymane and the Demon Hunter

    Quote From Hydrafrog
    Quote From AngryShuckie

What's wrong with Genn Greymane just not doing anything in demon hunter? It's not even close to the first time that a neutral card is essentially useless in a specific class (e.g. all secret synergy cards are only useful in 4 classes), and even main set mechanics have been notably weaker in some classes (it is no coincidence that rogue, whose hero power lasts (at least) 2 turns and doesn't stack, had no inspire card in TGT).

As I see it the whole point of Genn was to promote deck building utilising a 1 mana hero power, not having an especially powerful effect (that was Baku's purpose). So DH getting that for free doesn't motivate turning Genn into a Baku effect.

That's the whole point, it doesn't do anything for the class.  Every other class can benefit in one way or another from either Baku or Genn in their decks, some more than others.

As for Rogue not having any Inspire cards, Paladin and Rogue didn't get anything from Witchwood for Odd or Even support. Yet Odd Paladin and Odd Rogue have remained consistent through the ladders in Standard and then in Wild. Where as Priest and Druid both got Odd support cards and neither saw play.

As for bringing a powerful effect to the game, Even Shaman has been continually high on the Wild ladder.

I guess my point is that it doesn't need to do anything for the class. 4 out of 10 classes have neutral benefits for putting secrets in their deck, and 6 out of 10 could make decent use out of neutral weapon buffs, but that doesn't mean the other classes need to be able to benefit from those neutral cards just because they are available.

I fully understand where you are coming from with all of this, but it is fundamentally the same as suggesting Secretkeeper has a different effect for the secret-less classes, which is wholly unnecessary. The only difference is that Genn is a big flashy legendary, and that is not enough to justify adding some weird unique effect for demon hunter just because the class has normal Genn effect for free.

    ----------------------------

Rogue and paladin didn't get any class odd or even support precisely because their odd and even hero powers were expected to be good enough to make the decks by themselves. The devs made a point at the time that they provided class odd/even cards where they expected the archetype to need more support, so it is no huge surprise that with a couple of classes (druid and priest) that 1 card wasn't enough.
