  • This is such a weird rotation season.

Perhaps a bit weird to be commenting on this now, as for all we know the next two weeks will send some of these cards I want to talk about back into relevance... not likely, as I'm not seeing any real synergy here (you could say Shotbot bringing Mech Paladin back into relevance, but that already happened without him!) , but we shall see.

So, in a couple of months, it's that time of year again, Hearthstone rotation season. Witchwood, Boomsday Project, and Rastakhan's Rumble are all leaving standard play, unless Adventure Sets being part of Standard mucks things up a bit in ways I've forgotten. I remember getting confused about what was rotating after Kraken, but maybe they were still settling into this whole Standard format back then.

ANYWAYS, I'm 95% sure this is what's rotating, so my post will be based off of that premise. Cool? Cool.

You know the main thing that got me thinking about rotation, and made me want to write down my thoughts about this? At the time, I couldn't think of a SINGLE card from the Witchwood expansion that sees any play today.

Eventually, they started to trickle in. Town Crier. Lifedrinker. Hench-Clan Thug, on and off, I don't believe it's currently being played, but I do believe it was in and out of Rogue decks while the Descent of Dragons meta was settling. I guess Lord Godfrey is part of the current control Warlock build, and maybe this is just a recent thing, but when's the last time you've seen a Lord Godfrey played on you in Standard? It's been a while on my end!

I'm not saying there isn't more, but that's all that's coming to mind. Considering we once lived in a world where the dastardly Shudderwocky terrorized the meta alongside the EVIL Hagatha, two cards that single-handedly carried the Shaman class (and it wasn't uncommon to see them run together, although both cards could create very different archtypes if one so choosed) it's honestly strange to think about how that's the biggest difference we'd see in the meta if Witchwood rotated tomorrow. I think everybody would agree me with me on this, that in early 2020, the Keyword Rush that the Witchwood introduced is now a lot more impactful than the Witchwood expansion itself.

Perhaps I wouldn't be saying this if Baku the Mooneater never went to HoF (I'm in the camp of believing Even decks were still about to die with all the great tools for Evenlock and Even Paladin rotating last year, but the world will never know) but we live in this world as it is.

Onto the Boomsday Project. Zilliax is certainly an impactful card that a lot of decks utilized. SN1P SN4P is another card seen in many decks, and it's also an interesting case in that it's a card that was free for most players (not saying nobody had to craft him, don't get snippy), cards like Wargear are carrying Mech Paladin in the fight against Embiggen Druid, Boommaster Flark seems to have finally found his niche as a part of Quest Hunter, and Stargazer Luna and the Pocket Galaxy are two of the legendaries pulling the Highlander Mage deck together for potential highrolling.
...But wait, aren't I forgetting a few things? Surely I am. What about the dreaded control Warrior deck from back in the day? What about tools like Dyn-O-matic, Omega Devastator, Warpath (yes, I know that's a Witchwood card), Supercollider, the big bad Dr. Boom himself?

Yeah, none of that stuff gets run anymore, Warrior found better stuff to put in.

I'm editing in Mecha'thun, because... I honestly forgot Mecha'thun decks even existed when I was writing this up.

BUT WHAT ABOUT RASTAKHAN'S... okay, you already know where this is going, don't you?

Rastakhan's Rumble is easily the most forgettable set of all the ones we're talking about today. Halazzi helps out with Quest Hunter. He's replaceable Hench-Clan Hogsteed was a fantastic card on launch, but it's usage has dwindled considerably, and I don't believe anything that isn't Quest Hunter wants to run it right now. Holy Wrath came and went in the meta whenever it worked, and it's not working anymore. Part of the Dragon package introduced in Rastakhan (Firetree Witchdoctor, Crowd Roaster, Emberscale Drake) was being played around with for a bit, but as far as I know, all of that's been dropped now. Jan'alai the Dragonhawk used to be a fantastic card that had such a presence in Mage decks, BEAST MAGE was a thing for a bit, using cards like Untamed Beastmaster to buff your Jan'alai, Black Cat, and other such things with really good Mage cards that just so happened to be Beasts.

And now that entire package is dead.

Akali the Rhino, Oondasta, big rush minions were a thing at one point back when we were in a combo meta and everybody wanted to smash it before their combo happened. (Sidenote: Holy crap, remember when Amani War Bear surprised everyone and ended up being GOOD? Yeah...)

Now we aren't in a combo meta anymore. Which is also why Mojomaster Zihi fell out of favor, she's not really worth much when we aren't in a combo meta.

So, is there a point to any of this? How Big Bad Blizzard scammed us all through powercreep, rendering our previous OP cards completely worthless in a Descent of Dragons meta, forcing us to buy the shiny new cards as the old ones that used to rule the roost were slowly but surely forced out of the metagame?

No, not really. It's just weird to think about, to me. Three expansions, all of which used to have some extremely powerful cards that dominated or played a significant part in the metagame at some point, and I can think of so few, if any cards that I'm actually going to miss vanishing from the metagame. I'm not saying the rotation won't have any impact and won't change the meta at all (Mech Paladin is in a REALLY bad place now, for example) a rotation is on it's way, and yet? For me personally, it really doesn't feel that way, at all. I wouldn't call this a bold prediction to say that this set rotation will probably be the least meaningful one in Hearthstone's history. Compare that to Infinite Value Death Knights rotating out last year, and it's such a bizarre shift in the landscape to me, that we live in a world where cards like Dr. Boom, Mad Genius, Hagatha the Witch, the SHUDDERWOCKY FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE, and a 7 mana 4/4 that summons Ragnaros the Firelord with him are in the current format, and don't see any play.

I've said my piece, now I'll open it up to you guys, any thoughts?

And before anyone says it, yes, cards stagnate and phase out of the meta, that's how card games work, that's going to happen.

I challenge anyone to argue that there was ever a time in Hearthstone history where it happened more than the Year of the Dragon.

  • A Custom Fix for the Priest's Basic and Classic Sets

    Quote From shatterstar1998

I don't get why you put both Penance and Holy Fire into the same set? They are both identical in term of effect and function.

    Redundancy of effects =P

Penance also only hits minions, but is still a far better card than Holy Fire. Having both cards in a Core Set is good to teach players about how damage scales, as well as what makes one better than the other.

  • So, how long is Deny gonna stay at 3 mana?

    Quote From FortyDust

The developers will look at statistics first, then if it's on the borderline, they may factor in player sentiment.

There are plenty of other denial cards and tactics in the game (represented in every faction) that are just as strong, but because they are not worded as straightforwardly ("stop certain effects"), players tend not to think of them as unfair.

Playing around cards like Deny is simply part of the game. Watch some streamers if you need to see how it's done. If you're just too impatient to wait for an opening, I don't know what to tell you, but I don't think that's a good reason to change a reasonable card.

As for "solo winning certain match-ups," that is actually OK, too. Every deck and strategy has bad match-ups. If Deny is your deck's only weak point, that is all the more reason to keep it as it is.

    Quote From sydderal

Counters already exist in different shape or form outside of Deny sometimes with lower cost and usage outside of spell play.

    It doesn't counter burst.

It does have a niche to counter unit skills and untargeted + unconditional spells which usually are greed, and counters to greed are healthy.

But sure if you fill your deck with burst and only 1 greedy slow/fast spell guess which one will get denied (whichever the cost of Deny)

Deny is fine as it is.

    Totally agree.

I guess ppl aren't used to Magic the Gathering for example. I remember in Magic ppl using a lot of counter spells in a deck.

    Just take this in consideration:
Decks in Magic are 60 cards with 20+ being lands, that leaves less than 40 actual cards.
Decks would include Counterspell (2 mana and it counterd EVERYTHING including summoning creatures, not just fast or slow spells like here)
On the same deck you could see Undermine or Absorb (3 mana, counter anything and deal 3 dmg or gain 3 health)
On same deck Daze (2 mana - counter anything unless player pays one more)
On same deck Forbid (3 mana with buyback [means the counterspell could return to your hand] - counter anything)
    And the list goes one.
And we're talking about 4 copies of each in a deck, so 4x Counterspell, 4x daze, 4x undermine/absorb, 4x forbid = 16 counters in less than 40 actual cards.... 16 freaking counters!!!
And guess what, ppl played against it and around it.

And here, bitching about a Deny that costs 3 and NOT EVEN counters creatures, and you can use ONLY 3 copies in a deck of 40 actual cards (no lands).... I mean, just play around it....
You can't use your combo the turn you wanted!? Guess what, that was the rule in Magic the Gathering Counterspell decks, you would have to gather cards in your hand, powerfull enough so the opponent would be obligated to counter, until his mana was gone or no cards in hand, and just than you would do your combo.

    just my 2 cents :)

  • The Elusive problem and solutions

That's the issue with that list. Run down it and all you'll see is a couple of very expensive AoE removals - which walk right into Deny - and a lot of single-target removal spells which are fundamentally inefficient in and of themselves.

Not going into detail on Elusive because I've already done so like twice in other threads, but to summarise:

    - Elusive is a problem in the immediate due to a lack of tools to counter them for non-Ionian decks

    - Them existing in the same region as Deny is a further aggravating factor

    - The Magic comparison is a poor one because of the breadth and depth of tools available in that game and the different cadence of Magic over LoR

    - The point most people don't consider when looking at Elusives is the design space. Is playing against Elusives fun, whether you have the tools to fight them or not? Is playing with them fun, relative to other decks? Probably not, in my view. The theory of Elusive (and more to the point, Flying in Magic) never actually played out, and the design purpose was never actually reached. It has instead become a checkbox, 'do you have answer for this y/n', and it's a poorly placed checkbox in LoR because those answers don't exist in bulk

    Welcome to my world, in which even my tl;dr is long-winded -.-;

  • Standard Meta Report #21 - Top Hearthstone Decks January 26, 2020 - February 2, 2020

I don't really understand where you get from that Galakrond Warrior is bad against Rogue ? It's not on hsreplay.net and it's not my experience either. I'm not playing the newer versions with Deathwing or with the armour minions, and I still have an easy time in my range (7 to 3 kinda). Must say that I never ever face a quest Hunter, so maybe I'm lucky.

  • Daily rewards too powerful compared to normal play

Slammin' the downvote (which I actually rarely use, props to the thread for reminding me it existed).

This thread feels like the epitome of entitlement to me, really. Frontloading XP rewards into quests and FWOD bonuses is optimal both for players - who don't feel forced to grind and aren't punished for having other commitments - and also optimal for the developers because it encourages people to play daily but for a short enough time to not get burned out.

If the only reason you're playing the game is for rewards, you kinda need to reevaluate how you approach... well, games. To suggest that playing games beyond your three FWOD bonuses is pointless is to suggest you don't actually enjoy playing the game. If you do enjoy it, well then, there's the reason to keep playing. And if you don't, why are you even here? Stop playing it already.

Alternate take - just ignore the actual numbers that come up on the screen and imagine all the XP is spread over your first twenty games instead. It works out the same.

  • Legends of Runeterra Patch This Week! New Guardians, Yasuo Animation Speed Increased, Keeping an Eye on Experience

    Quote From Fluxflashor

Yeah, I really love the way Riot communicates with players. League has had consistent patches for so long so it is a very welcome return for Legends of Runeterra. Hearthstone and Blizzard are such a joke when it comes to regular game updates... minus Heroes of the Storm but they killed that game so it doesn't really count.

While true that League's patch system shows consistency, as a long-time player I'd say it's more a different flavour of irritation than a direct improvement. Rito's communication on patch notes was great a couple years ago, but has been getting steadily worse since then. There hasn't been a single patch note released in the past year that hasn't had at least one example of a change explanation being irrelevant to, or directly contradicting, the change itself - e.g. 'we want to take some power out of this champion's early game and focus on giving them a strong late game'; actual change just takes 10 damage off each rank of Q.

That's aside from their general pattern of buffing and nerfing semi-randomly, leading to something of a carousel effect where the meta changes much more because Rito decided to buff/nerf something rather than through a natural system of finding counters to established play patterns. Oh, and occasional manifest refusal to identify the real problem, such as massively overbuffing Conqueror and then deciding to blanket-nerf a bunch of champions that used it instead of, y'know, reverting the buff.

So yeah, it's not all sunshine and roses :P

Deny is fine as it is.

So greed= any half decent spell over 4 mana? Still doesn't seem fine to me. The problem is trying to figure out a way to fix it so that we don't have 3 different aggro/midrange decks running around dominating the meta, while not making the card totally useless.

  • I think i should have won... pls explain to me

As OldManSanns explained, a leveled-up Fiora only needs 2 more kills to fulfill her win condition.

And it's also correct that combat order can play a deciding role in scenarios like these. I don't think greenhat is correct in saying that Fiora's win condition takes precedence over a win via nexus kill; whichever occurs first according to combat order should determine the winner. The game always plays out the attack animations for all attacking units, even if the defender is already eliminated after the first unit's strike (However, as soon as the nexus health reaches 0, a "SKIP" button appears at the bottom of the screen, so you can skip the rest of the combat animations and leave the match).

Heroes of the Storm but they killed that game so it doesn't really count.

Well, they killed the e-sport and downsized the Devs team but those few remaining are doing a pretty good job with costant update and new content. But slower than the old pace.

Probably removing the HGC has opened up some design choices that before wouldn't be allowed in the name of said e-sport. Imho, the game is not doing terribly and on EU (at last) it still has a solid playerbase.

I think it's fair to say that this shows once again how important a healthy local comptetitive esports scene is. There are tons of French LAN tournaments, which also manage to get pretty high viewership. The only other country with a comparable Hearthstone esports scene is China, which showed during the Global Finals, where the Chinese players wiped the floor with most other competitors.

The thriving local scene also helps cultivate a huge French fanbase, which allows for more sponsorship money for the players, relieving them of the need for another job on the side, giving them more time to practice. If nothing will change from Blizzard's side in how they facilitate local competitive Hearthstone leagues and events, expect the French dominance to continue.

  • 2020 Beast Hunter

I've been doing pretty well against Druids. Embiggen druid's big weakness is their early game and going either very wide or very tall. This deck can do all those things, provided you draw well. You can consider subbing in Deadly Shot to be better able to deal with their huge taunts. Another thing to not forget is that Embiggen druid usually only runs one healing card, Zilliax. Because of this, once Zilliax is out of the way, your hero power puts them on a clock.

  • Daily rewards too powerful compared to normal play

    Quote From ShakeNBakeUK

so all the downvoters are happy that games played after the first 3 wins per day are practically worthless..? xd

It's not worthless I don't think I need to be rewarded for every time I play, the progression is fine but I am having fun when I play the game so it's not my main focus.

and why worthless when you get a lot of exp per win? AND also per lose.. you must not have played Hearthstone.. in Hearthstone you get only the quests and then every 3 wins(and ONLY if you win) you get 1/5 of the minimum quest reward in this game you get 1/5 of the minimum quest reward EVERY WIN as well as 4/10, 1/5 and 1/10 for the first 3 wins daily..

Let's assume You need 2 dailies worth of exp on average to get a reward.. you get at minimum for your first 3 wins 1000+ 600(200 per win) + 400 + 200+ 100 =2300 exp per day for 3 wins.

    On average -2000 exp~pack in hs = 100 gold. The ratio is 20 exp= 1 gold.

In hearthstone you get 70 gold for 3 wins(if you didn't reroll for the worse tier or a chance of better reward for some reason) in this game you get 115 gold for your first 3 wins (+ quest) each day.

Here you get much more for the same effort of grinding and a reward in runettera is much more effective (also contributed to a weekly chest+ token + shards) than a potential 40 dust lowest roll pack possible in HS.

Another factor is the first 10 wins games give 200 exp 1/10 of reward so it's similar to 10 gold.. and you get it every win as opposed to every 3 wins.

Also imagine if you got 5 gold per lose in hearthstone as well..

Last calculation: Let's say you play 15 games daily, win 10 lose 5 and complete your quest while at it, in Runettera you get 210 gold(+ progression toward the weekly chest) in hearthstone you get 110 gold.

So your complaining doesn't makes sense.

    Quote From ShakeNBakeUK

so all the downvoters are happy that games played after the first 3 wins per day are practically worthless..? xd

No, the downvoters are downvoting because...

A: Your argument makes no sense to begin with, daily quests by design are going to be more impactful than regular wins.

B: You don't even represent your point correctly, as it's 200 XP for seven more wins past the dailies.

C: This is somehow not enough? 200 XP is a very reasonable reward when a daily quest is 1000 or 1500 if you roll a good one, (which is not at all worthless, by the way, 7 x 200 is 1400 XP per day, that's quite an extra chunk there) and it's a BAD thing that we aren't being glued to the computer grinding out more wins? What in the WORLD are you talking about?

You had a bad take and people are calling you on it. Just take the L on this and move on.

  • What is the Shen emote supposed to convey?

    :-(  All this negativity...

I started this thread because I'm a big believer in the Golden Rule.  That doesn't mean prescribing how others should act me or even expecting them to respond in kind, it just means making a little effort on my part to make the world a better place--or in this case, a short game of chance with an anonymous stranger a little more cordial.  If they reciprocate, that's great, if they don't, that's OK too.  If they want to be rude: that's disappointing but as others have pointed out it is just a game and there is a convenient Squelch feature.  I just didn't recognize the Shen emote so I wanted to ensure what I was emoting was being received as intended.

40D, I confess: I'm shocked that someone who uses an avatar from a show obsessed with Immanuel Kant’s categorical imperative would find a mild-mannered discussion about etiquette so hackle-raising.  Then again, you did pick Bad Janet over Good Janet, so maybe it is sort of on-brand.  :-P  I realize you find this whole topic childish and irrelevant; please do not take it so personally.  This thread was intended as a fact-finding discussion, not an attack.

  • Daily rewards too powerful compared to normal play

    Quote From ShakeNBakeUK

so all the downvoters are happy that games played after the first 3 wins per day are practically worthless..? xd

I didn't downvote you as I didn't think you did anything wrong besides perhaps poorly word your thread title, but yes: I personally am very happy that I only need to play ~6 games every day to get a lion's share of XP.  There are days when I do want to play more but there are also days when I don't have time to play at all, so I've found this model very accommodating to my lifestyle.

For what its worth, I do sympathize with your feelings--you clearly have a dedication for this game if you are routinely getting past the 20-wins-per-day rolloff and understandably feel you aren't being rewarded proportionately to your level of involvement--I just don't share them.  :-)
