Below you will find all the winners of the Season 1 card design competitions.
How To Train Year Dragon
For this first competition, we'd like to see you create a card which utilises one of the keywords or mechanics introduced in the Year of the Dragon.
The full list of available keywords and mechanics is:
- Twinspell
- Lackey generation or synergy
- Schemes (eg Hagatha's Scheme or Togwaggle's Scheme)
- Reborn
- Plagues (eg Plague of Flames or Plague of Murlocs)
- Invoke
- Sidequests
- Breaths (eg Breath of Dreams or Corrosive Breath)
- Explorers (eg Azure Explorer or Bronze Explorer)
- Note that to count as an Explorer, your card can only have a single keyword in addition to the Dragon-discovering Battlecry
This competition ran from February 17, 2020 until February 24, 2020.
One Man's Treasure
For this competition, we'd like you to create a treasure card for any of the rogue-like single-player modes (Dungeon Run, Monster Hunt, Rumble Run, Dalaran Heist or Tombs of Terror).
- Your treasure can be a playable card or a Passive upgrade
- You may make a Shrine for Rumble Run
- Most treasures are completely neutral and can be obtained by any class, however:
- You may make a class-specific treasure for Rumble Run
- You may make a class-specific treasure for Tombs of Terror
- You may make a character-specific treasure for Monster Hunt
- You must use an appropriate watermark for your card
- Kobolds and Catacombs, Witchwood, Rastakhan's Rumble, Rise of Shadows and Saviours of Uldum are allowed, to make that more explicit

Do You Copy?
For this competition, we're looking for you to create copying cards!
- Your card must create a copy (or copies) of one or more cards from somewhere in the game
- Either player's board, hand or deck are acceptable places to copy from
- Your card can add these copies to your hand, summon them directly to the board (minions), equip them (weapons) or cast them (spells, hero cards)
This competition ran from March 2, 2020 until March 9, 2020.
Pole Position
For this competition, we want to see cards that care about positioning!
- You must create a card with an effect that cares about card positioning
- This can be on the board (eg Dire Wolf Alpha), in the hand (eg Soul Infusion), or in the deck (eg Mischief Maker)
This competition ran from March 9, 2020 until March 16, 2020.
Ménagerie à Trois
For this competition, we want you to care about minion types (or tribes, or whatever you want to call them).
- You must create a minion with a minion type
- The accepted types are Beast, Demon, Dragon, Elemental, Mech, Murloc, Pirate and Totem
- Your minion must have an effect that interacts with a different minion type than its own
- Some examples include Hungry Crab, Zoobot and Skyfin
This competition ran from March 16, 2020 until March 23, 2020.
Are You Prepared?
The Demon Hunters are upon us! Sadly, they won't have cards from any previous expansions, so it's up to us to make some for them.
- You must create a Demon Hunter card for a previous Hearthstone expansion or adventure
- Any card set is fair game, excluding Basic, Classic and Ashes of Outland. Make sure you're using the appropriate watermark!
- You can only use mechanics introduced up to the expansion or adventure you chose
- No Naxxramas cards with Reborn, or GvG cards with Poisonous, for example
- You must obey the rarity distribution of previous expansions and adventures
- No Naxxramas Legendaries or Blackrock Mountain Epics, please!

Demonic Obsession
With Demon Hunters soon to be upon us, it only seems fair that they get some more Demons to hunt! Demon Hunter and Warlock are already chock full of them, so let's give the other classes a chance to play.
- You must create a minion that has the minion type Demon
- Your card must be a class card for any class except Demon Hunter or Warlock
This competition ran from March 30, 2020 until April 6, 2020.
The Price Of Power
We're looking for powerful minions this week - so powerful, in fact, that they come with a drawback to offset them.
- You must create a minion
- Your minion must have better than average stats or effects for its cost, with a drawback
- Examples include Flamewreathed Faceless and Vulgar Homunculus
- Note that merely having poor stats will not be considered a drawback.
For the purposes of this competition, Dormant is banned.
This competition ran from April 6, 2020 until April 13, 2020.
TAUNT, INSECT!
This competition ran from April 13, 2020 until April 20, 2020.
Top Secret
What's the design brief this week? It's a Secret!
- You must create a Secret - it's that simple!
- Your Secret must be for one of the existing Secret classes
- More specifically, that's Hunter, Mage, Paladin or Rogue
This competition ran from April 20, 2020 until April 27, 2020.
Archaeological Deck
This week we're taking a leaf out of Rafaam's book this week and messing with our opponent's deck!
- You must create a card which interacts with your opponent's deck in some way
- Some existing examples include Void Contract, Weasel Tunneler, Bad Luck Albatross, Deathlord, Mischief Maker, King Togwaggle and Gnomeferatu.
Cards which simply force the opponent to draw, like Coldlight Oracle, do not count.
This competition ran from April 27, 2020 until May 4, 2020.
Classically Trained
This week we're recruiting people to our favourite classes!
- You must create a Legendary Class minion or Hero card
- Your Legendary must be a character who already has a Neutral Legendary card (but not a Class card)
- Your character can take any canon form, even if they haven't appeared as such in Hearthstone
- For example, any Dragon may appear in their human form (assuming they have one)
- We will also accept characters who stray outside of canon, but make sense in the context of an expansion - for example, Ragnaros, Lightlord
This competition ran from May 4, 2020 until May 11, 2020.
Two Quests Are Better Than One
We're going on a quest this week!
- You must create a class card
- Your card should synergise with both of your class's quests
- For example, Darkshire Librarian synergises with both Lakkari Sacrifice and Supreme Archaeology
We're specifically looking for synergy with the Quests, not the Sidequests.
This competition ran from May 11, 2020 until May 18, 2020.
By Your Powers Combined
Tired of the same old Hero Power every game? Great news! We're swapping them out this week.
- You must create a card that changes your Hero Power into a new one
- You cannot create a Hero Card, a Quest, or a minion which replaces your Hero (like Lord Jaraxxus)
- These are all card types which could get their own competition - we want to focus on the Hero Powers this time
- The Hero Power your card gives you cannot be an existing one - including Basic and Upgraded Hero Powers
- We want to see brand new ideas!
- Existing examples include Charged Hammer, Shadowform and Vilefin Inquisitor
Remember to include your Hero Power in your submission by adding it as an extra card!

From Foe To Friend
We're going on an adventure to find some new friends this week!
- You must create a Legendary minion
- Your minion must be based on a Boss from one of Hearthstone's Solo Content
- This can be any of the bosses, even ones which already have cards!
This competition ran from May 25, 2020 until June 1, 2020.
Spacial Awareness
I've come to make an announcement - we're celebrating the moon, the stars and all other things space this week!
- You must create a card which is themed around outer space
- That's it, that's the whole prompt! Some examples include Astral Communion, Luna's Pocket Galaxy and Harbinger Celestia
This competition ran from June 1, 2020 until June 8, 2020.
I Miss My X
~I'm always gonna want you back. We're finding our X in the competition this week!
- You must create a card with the letter 'x' in the card text
- That's the card text, not the name!
- You cannot use the word 'next' in your card text
- We're trying to find our X, not looking for the next one!
- Examples include Nat Pagle, Rolling Fireball and Explorer's Hat
This competition ran from June 8, 2020 until June 15, 2020.
D-A-M-A-G-E
Do we need to spell things out for you? We already did that in the competition name...
- You must create a card which has or synergises with Spell Damage
- 'Synergy' should be explicit. Fireball does not count; Arcane Blast does
This competition ran from June 15, 2020 until June 22, 2020.
Name That Card!
Collectible cards is the name of the game this week!
- You must create a card which generates an existing collectible card
- Summoning, adding to hand, shuffling into your deck - these all count!
- Your card cannot pick randomly from a subset of cards - it must be specific
- Power of Creation and Sonya Shadowdancer are examples of cards which would not work this week
- Ball of Spiders, Imprisoned Gan'arg and Violet Spellwing are all acceptable entries

Uncharrrted Waters
Pirates have taken over Battlegrounds recently, and they're looking to expand their reach further!
- You must create a Pirate minion
- Your minion cannot be Warrior, Rogue or Neutral
- We're looking to new waters! There are currently no Pirates in any other classes, so get creative.
