Why Doesn't Blizzard do More Crowdfunding Promos to Increase the Prize Pools of Tournaments?

I'm prolly just ignorant here but Why Doesn't Blizzard do More Crowdfunding Promos to Increase the Prize Pools of Tournaments?

By this mean, promos like the pack promo earlier this year where 50% of the income was used to increase the prize pool of Masters.

Why don't we have more of these? I'm thinking bigger prize pools would be better for all the players. For example, they could increase the consolation prize for players, they could increase the prizes from 3rd place below, etc.

I personally wouldn't mind buying more packs if they support the competitive side of HS.

  • I'm all for more crowdfunding stuff to help prize pools. The Dota 2 Invitational has been doing that since its inception as far as I'm aware and has consistently pushed for the largest prize pools in Esports and generally, everybody loves them as both sides prosper out of it.

    As for why Blizzard isn't a fan of them, we can only speculate why. Like with the Thunder King one, they capped it off at an additional 250k for the prize money which is better than nothing for sure, but still weird that they would cap something like that considering that they were still making a profit out of it. My best guess as to why they haven't brought this back is simply because either the current state of the economy and the world as a whole with the Corona Virus, or some issue popping up when it came to distributing the money out. It'd be great to see them again, but with a new expansion being revealed tomorrow, I don't feel like Blizzard is going to try selling any other bundles for the upcoming month.

      Been thinking of DOTA 2 too actually. Perplexes me why Blizzard doesn't follow. They even get to pocket half the profits. Let the fans support the players.

      I also don't understand the cap. IIRC, we reached the cap 3 days after the release of the promo. So much lost potential. Hope the reason isn't solely greed.  

  • Some speculation;

    - To get people to buy them, they'd have to sell at a discounted price. Its the usual 1USD per pack deal instead of 2.99USD for 2 packs. So if this becomes a staple, no one will buy packs at ordinary price anymore, hence less profit

    - The idea is that part of the proceeds (250k USD) goes to players via tournaments, while they keep the rest. We can only speculate that this is usually surpassed, but not by much. So theres not really a lot of it in it for Blizz to continue this practice.

    - Part of a plan to reduce perceived costs to playing the game. There's usually 2 deals per expansion. 1 will come one or two months after expansion launches (usually with a skin attached), another will come as part of the adventure. Add more to this and suddenly FTP players will feel like they're being pressured to pay to play. This is a longshot, but I cant wholeheartedly say I didn't feel left out on good deals myself (I've only preordered once, and usually skip the discounts unless its current expansion packs)

    - Or more insidiously, the cap has never been reached so blizz dont get a bean out of the deal. Hence its discontinued.
