Arena

This is what would save the Arena format (So Obvious.)

It's rough when you draft that really interesting deck then happen to get beat up with it and then presto, you never get to try it again.

 

Why not allow a casual mode where you can take it for a spin to your heart's content?

 

This is a really obvious idea I'm sure that has been brought up several times before. Right now I'm playing a very fun Elemental Mage deck with Silas Darkmoon and a surprisingly effective Deck of Lunacy. It would be so fun to be able to hold onto it for a few more plays after the fun is over.

  • That defeats the purpose of the arena draft, where you can never really face the same deck twice.

    Casuals mode for arena, on the unlikely event its introduced, should likewise follow the same rule. If its possible to save the deck, then the concept of diversity will be lost. If the idea is a mode that allows one to play a drafted arena deck more than once, you'll swiftly find out that most of the decks you will be facing will be those that managed at least 10 wins, or the most absurdly unfair curvestone deck that ever existed.

    Arena needs some help. Maybe something that adds additional arena only cards like the Murozond event in the past would spark more interest in the mode. But with both battlegrounds and duels in the mix, I struggle to see anyone but the most loyal of players continue to play this mode.

  • Not sure if you're thinking I meant adding the losing deck to the pool of active players... I meant just being able to play after with a losing deck versus other like-minded losers. Why not? Seems like a lost opportunity to me.

     

    Additionally it would be awesome if 12 win decks could have an extra circuit of their own.  Dreaming too big? Again I reply, why the hell not?

      Basically you're suggesting that we be able to keep decks that have lost and play it again on another 12-win circuit. The real question would obviously then be how many players would actually want to do that, bearing in mind that most players would draft their initial deck efficiently (I wouldn't pass up a Fireball for a Deck of Lunacy, for example). A lost, especially one that is early, is more likely to be from a poorly drafted deck, one of which most players will immediately forget and try another draft, because the idea from the start is to draft a deck that can win.

      The most obvious upgrade (and the most reasonable as well) would be to implement casual mode in arena, the same manner as for duels. In that case, then it would actually be sensible for them provide an option to keep a draft that have lost. That would actually perk up interest in arena, and would likely take the least effort for team5 to do so.

      Now on to the crucial question; "why the hell not?". Well, what incentive is there for team5 to do so? Took them ages to implement scrolling through the card collection. Took a whole lot of poor excuses and time before they finally gave us more than 9 deck slots. Hell, it took somewhere around 2 years before arena was properly balanced. And now we face an even tougher question - why implement casuals for a mode that has traditionally require players to give up precious resources to play?

      That's not to say I wouldn't want to see a casuals mode implemented for arena. Maybe its one of the goals in the roadmap that's spell-locked. Guess we'll find out.

        Wasnt always the case but yes, nowadays it is mostly about RNG and it sucks.

        I think casual mode, similar to Duels, for Arena could be cool and could possibly get more ppl to play it. Then again, the heavy RNG aspect makes things a bit different than it used to. The skill cap and acquiring said skill, which could be done mostly by just playing the game mode, was the biggest factor in Arena once upon a time. And it was very costly to be able to better yourself. With a casual mode with no rewards, but no entry fee, ppl could get a grip on how the mode works and how to draft their decks and eventually move to the regular Arena and enjoy playing it.

        Or at least thats what i would have said a few years ago. Im not really sure what to say today. Arena was my main game mode for years and i had thousands of games played and pretty much sustained myself from Arena alone. I loved the draft mode. But the amount of RNG there now, i just cant enjoy it anymore, because the RNG leveled the playing field. Which might sound elitist of me to say, but i think it is fair to want a more experienced player to do better than the least experienced one and have their choices matter. Not always, but most of the time. If the game decides i lose, i lose, if the game decides i win, i win. My actions rarely matter. That is an exaggeration, ofc, if you play like a total newbie you will still lose more often, but the skill of knowing how to draft, what to look out for and trying to bait out stuff or play around just almost does not exist anymore, because the random generators make this impossible.

        I think the change to the entry fee, and consequently to the reward system, is the one thing that needs to happen, if there is ever going to be a "revive" of Arena, but im not holding my breath for it to ever happen. Duels were my last hope that with its introduction, especially since it was supposed to share the Arena reward system, would bring about a reword to that, but that didnt happen, instead it basically slid into Arena's shoes, which is bad. Oh well.

  • I do think it would make sense for there to be a casual arena mode where you could enter for free and play without rewards, like they have with Duels. But I don't think being able to save your deck is a good idea. It defeats the purpose of arena.

  • I think saving your deck would destroy any mode, cause why wouldn't you save your crazy deck?

    a lot of 11~10 decks would go around the mode endlessly and other decks wouldn't get too far cause every other deck would be crazy..

    people like to win they would just retire the deck at 11 wins just to farm wins and eventually it would devolve to that..

    Casual arena would be interesting if the mode wasn't as desolated.

  • IMHO, the biggest problem with Arena mode is the cost of entry. When I was playing HS daily, I never played Arena except when I was awarded a free token because I was afraid of going <3 wins and "losing value". Especially once I learned that there were 3rd party PC tools that helped other players optimize their draft picks (I was exclusively mobile at that time) -- if you're not going to go through the same effort, you're essentially playing handicapped.

    I know they can't just make the mode entirely free and keep the same rewards, but it seems like they could do something to make it a more casual friendly.
