Below you will find all the winners of the Season 5 card design competitions.
Bottoms Up
We're back! Season 5 kicks off with a classic 'latest expansion mechanic' competition - get your trawlers ready!
- You must create a card which uses the Dredge keyword
- Your card doesn't necessarily have to Dredge itself, but synergies should make explicit reference to it - we might do another competition for cards like Ambassador Faelin in the future, but for now they won't count
This competition ran from April 25, 2022 until May 2, 2022.
That Sinking Feeling
It's time to alter the depths in a different way - instead of taking, we'll give instead!
- You must create a card which puts something on the bottom of your deck
- Last week we were Dredging cards up - this week we're putting some stuff back!
- Your card cannot put a Sunken version of itself on the bottom
- Look to cards like Ambassador Faelin and Sir Finley, Sea Guide for examples of other things you could try!

Double Identity
We've a lot of classes in need of help at the minute, so it's time to put some heroes on double shifts!
- You must create a Dual Class Hero Card
- It's as simple as that! You can combine whatever two classes you like - don't feel beholden to the pairings we saw in Scholomance.

Ensemble Cast
I'm sick of Pirate Warrior and Mech Mage - let's see a little more diversity in our decklists!
- You must create a card which encourages you to run multiple spell schools or minion types in the same deck
- Whether that's via specific synergies like Ringmaster Whatley or a more general idea like Multicaster is up to you!
This competition ran from May 16, 2022 until May 23, 2022.
Whelp, That'll Be The Theme
Don't worry, Onyxia, we're getting right on it! Please, you have to help me, I don't know where to find any more Whelps!
- You must create a card which synergises with Whelps, generates Whelps or is itself a Whelp
- Whelp, that doesn't look like a word anymore! Think Horn of Wrathion or Twilight Whelp.
This competition ran from May 23, 2022 until May 30, 2022.
Too Much Is Not Enough
Don't you just hate waste? Let's make sure our cards this week keep on giving until they can't give any more!
- You must create a card which uses the "excess" mechanic
- We're talking about cards like Explosive Runes or Unstable Shadow Blast, but we'll also be allowing variations on the wording which produce similar effects, like Rats of Extraordinary Size, where excess rats go to your hand

Questing For Two
Sometimes you need to hedge your bets. Why send one class to save the day when you can send two?
- You must create a Dual Class Quest card
- You're free to match up whichever classes you want, but make sure it's a Quest - no Questlines or Sidequests allowed!
This competition ran from June 6, 2022 until June 13, 2022.
New You
It's time to reinvent ourselves! Let's see just how drastic a transformation we can make.
- You must create a card that transforms a minion
- On the battlefield, in the hand, wherever - so long as a minion is transformed, it counts!
This competition ran from June 13, 2022 until June 20, 2022.
A Comp Of Frost And Flame
Winterveil is coming! Well, not really at all actually, but I don't know enough to make any better references than that.
- You must create a Frost spell that cannot Freeze or interact with Frozen minions, or a Fire spell that cannot deal damage or destroy minions
- Your spell cannot be a Mage or Shaman spell
- We want to see how other classes might utilise these spell types in interesting ways!
This competition ran from June 20, 2022 until June 27, 2022.
That's So Random
What's the most out there competition we could come up with? Something absolutely nobody would see coming, just truly... unexpected?
- You must create a card which has the word 'random' in its card text
- We'll also be accepting the word 'randomly', for those interested in choosing targets as such
This competition ran from June 27, 2022 until July 4, 2022.
New Upgrade Available
Sometimes you just want your card to be a little bit better - so let's set about making some upgrades!
- You must create a card which can upgrade under certain conditions
- Think of cards like the Spellstones or the Schemes for inspiration
- Mechanics which upgrade cards (like Corrupt or Infuse) are not allowed
- We're all about self-improvement here - no shortcuts allowed!

Stay On Target
[Hearthstone Card (CardID or Name) Not Found]We need you to keep on target this week, so... wait, I have an idea!
- You must create a card which can let you select multiple characters as targets
- Barbed Nets and Goliath, Sneed's Masterpiece are our only current examples - the technology is here!
This competition ran from July 11, 2022 until July 18, 2022.
Just My Card Type
Sometimes a card just isn't the right one for a situation. If only it were a different card type...
- You must create a card that can change itself or another card into one of a different card type
- Remornia, Living Blade is a fantastic example, but something like Cannonmaster Smythe would also count!
This competition ran from July 18, 2022 until July 25, 2022.
Location, Location, Location
So, where we dropping boys?
- You must create a Location card
- It's as simple as that! Check out our expansion guide if you want a refresher on how Locations work, and to see the existing Locations!
This competition ran from July 25, 2022 until August 1, 2022.
Absolute Unit
These cards left a Colossal impact, so it's time for an equally massive send-off!
- You must create a Colossal minion
- Like the Legendaries from Sunken City, of course - though yours don't need to be either, merely Colossal in their own right!
This competition ran from August 1, 2022 until August 8, 2022.
Infuse The Situation
Oh no, my minions keep dying! What am I to do with all this Anima?
- You must create a card with Infuse
- Back to Nathria we go - though of course your card doesn't have to be from Nathria if you don't want it to be
This competition ran from August 8, 2022 until August 15, 2022.
One-Set Wonder
Sometimes your favourite new archetype just doesn't get a chance to shine - so let's fix that!
- You must create a card which supports an undersupported existing archetype
- Think something like the classic meme of Freeze Shaman, which for a long time only had one expansion of (mediocre) support and only recently was revisited. Use that as a rough guide - if it's been supported for more than two expansions, it's not undersupported!
This competition ran from August 15, 2022 until August 22, 2022.
Dawn Of The Dead
Demon Hunter was added to the game so smoothly with no issues at all - surely adding another class will be easy enough?
- You must create a Legendary for a hypothetical Death Knight Initiate Set
- Death Knight has been added to the game, and it's up to you to come up with a killer Legendary for them!
- Your Legendary cannot use a new Keyword
- We're focusing on Death Knight design in this competition - adding new Keywords would just muddy the waters!
This competition ran from August 22, 2022 until August 29, 2022.
Cast On, Cast Off
It seems like an awful lot of effort to play all these cards. If only they could help out somehow...
- You must create a card which can play other cards
- There's plenty of ways to go about this - at random (Servant of Yogg-Saron) or very specific (Lady in White); from hand (Felwalker), from deck (Nightshade Bud) or from the past (Tess Greymane). Maybe you'll find another different way!
This competition ran from August 29, 2022 until September 5, 2022.
One Last Turn
Proper planning leads to perfect placements - make sure your card has all the set-up it needs!
- You must create a card that has an effect based on something you did the previous turn
- Think of cards like Krag'wa, the Frog or Scorch if you're struggling to see where to take this one!
