[New Class] Archivist
Greetings here! I'm here to present you my version of how I would change Priest's Core Set... new class. I've taken a break from my core set plans and created something a bit different.
This time, it's an entirely new class. In my interview about Hunter and Demon Hunter Core Set Changes, I did say making one for Demon Hunter was close to creating a new class, but Archivist was one true new class, because I had to make everything from sratch instead of having ready pieces like I had with DH. It's been at least a year since I attempted to make a new class - my latest one beforehand was Monk, and before Monk - Witch Doctor, which was actually one of the first ever classes released to Hearthcards Class Creator. But without further adieu, let's move on to Archivist!
For your information, you can also check the class in Hearthcards Class Creator.
Strengths and Weaknesses
- Strengths
- Card Draw and Generation - Archivists must quickly move through pages to find exact information.
- Discard - Informations may sometimes be lost, but that can also clean up the text if an error occurs.
- Buffs - Poets can take inspiration from books they read.
- Removal - In a library, you must remain silent. Obey this rule or else get expeled!
- Cost Reduction - Digging in books faster at a cheap price? Count them in!
- Limitations
- Agression - To read and find inromation fast, you need to BE fast.
- Survivability - Some medicine can't hurt if it means to find information more precisely.
- Mill - Your opponent is also encouraged to read on a regular basis.
- Weaknesses
- Spell Damage - While interrupting silence will get you kicked, you won't get vanquished. Yes, they don't have any form of damage to heroes and even minions (!).
- RNG - Archivists must be precise. They musn't allow mistakes to happen. They happen, but they should be quickly eliminated.

Interesting concept of a new hero. There's just so much stuff you can do, and so much different synergies.
- The hero power is unique and interesting, but ultimately sucks. Obviously the idea is that discarding cards aren't always in your favor but can sometimes flip the board. And that's where the issue lies. Its too specific. Can anyone build a deck without also including those cards that actively do something even when discarded? Hero powers are supposed to underline the hero's core, but be general enough to do something useful even when there's no synergies. Also, since this class obviously don't suffer from card draw, why would the hp be used instead of just playing for card draw?
- Decay's effect is not a healthy concept, in my opinion. In some cases, it may well just be 'freeze a minion forever', and takes up a board slot. In there were ever a way to duplicate the spell you can genuinely just deny your opponent a board to play with.
- Poetry professor is a real unique card. But phone users will absolutely hate it. And its basically a tutor card for anything in your deck. I would assume if you spell it wrong, then its just a 4 mana 3/3 for nothing.
- spoil the ending is weird. Does it do anything when played?
- hourglass of purity is basically broken as hell. Its a free twisting nether, but only playable on 10. So this class gets a free board swing and can do it twice. If this has to exist, then it has to be a legendary card, or come with some real drawbacks, like costing some life, or maybe increase the cost of cards in hand. Either way, it cant be a free board swing for it to be healthy
Things of note:
- Your Hero Power fails the "turn 2" test where your Hero Power must be usable on turn 2, a test that every Hero Power must pass before your class deserves to have a chance to exist. The only class that skimps on this line a little bit is Priest, but it's definitely not as egregious as the Hero Power in this class right now.
- Speaking of your Hero Power, it basically makes 9/10-Cost cards in your class unplayable since you might draw one with the Hero Power and be stuck with having to discard it.
- Decay is fairly dangerous. Setting a minion's Attack to 0 permanently is often avoided due to its potential to lock your opponent out of summoning any minions. Hex is fine because the target also gains Taunt.
- I'm not sure what you mean by "type a card name" on Poetry Professor. Are you physically typing a name with a keyboard? In that case, this card is problematic because it essentially allows you to tutor absolutely any card in the entire game. It's also really bad for mobile players who will probably be a disadvantage with this effect.
- Sigil of Lucidity seems really weak. It's essentially an Emperor Thaurissan tick that costs 5 mana and also requires you to discard your hand and wait.
- Hourglass of Purity seems very broken as it's basically a Twisting Nether + Time Warp for 10 mana.
- Jolene Knottley seems fine as a card, but it's probably a lot better if it was part of a rotatable set instead of the Initiate one because there's always potential for this to be broken.
Thanks for some feedback!
