Competition Theme: New You

It's time to reinvent ourselves! Let's see just how drastic a transformation we can make.

  • You must create a card that transforms a minion
    • On the battlefield, in the hand, wherever - so long as a minion is transformed, it counts!

RenoLord is looking for some adaptable minions this week, so make sure you can change them into something fancy!

As always, I can be reached through Discord or here on the site via PM if you have any issues to report.

Competition Phases

Here are the phases of this card design competition

  • Submission Phase: Starts on Mon, Jun 13 17:00 EDT (GMT -0400). Runs until Sat, Jun 18 17:00 EDT (GMT -0400)
  • Voting Phase: Starts on Sat, Jun 18 17:00 EDT (GMT -0400). Runs until Sun, Jun 19 16:00 EDT (GMT -0400)

Two variations on some low-hanging fruit lol:

You have a couple benefits with either card:

    1. A quick proc for the Questline Find the Imposter (and the other SI:7 cards).
    2. Burgle Rogue support; or flexibility with your own deck, enabling you to play more copies of cards than you could normally have.
    3. The information game, which is often overhyped but it's still available.

Hope this counts. Basically when you draw the legendary you get these 2 minions in hand. This lets you play half of the minion early in case you need to control the board or feel it could survive to get the big minion earlier than turn 8. When they reunite and transform, it's a brand new minion with rush so you can attack with it right away.

I found something very flavorful and lore-friendly in my art storage and came up with this idea:

Things I'm considering and I'd like to hear your thoughts about (on top of general feedback):

    - The Battlecry might be strong enough to raise the Cost of the hero to 7.

    - Both the Battlecry and the Hero Power are all out transforming themed at the moment, but I could mix things up a bit with the Hero Power summoning a Tiki or a Voodoo Figurine with an interesting effect.

    - The Hero Power got the random targetting treatment to avoid it being completely OP. I could make it targeted without the Cost reduction though.

    - I took the Frog token from OOC's card data base, but it has the Legacy watermark... is that the correct one here?

I haven't been that excited about one of my custom card ideas in quite a while :) Please help me polish this card to bring out its full potential!

I notice I am confused. Something I believe isn't true. How do I know what I think I know?

Not sure if this is interesting gameplay wise, but I find it funny at least.

The 3 Mana version is more nuanced (as the 4 Mana version is a fancier "Your Hero Power silences and destroys minions"), but I'm not sure people will like its randomness.

I might go with something else entirely, dunno.

    Damn slow week huh?

    • linkblade91 - I like the idea behind the card but the SI7 connection feels a bit forced. It should turn only into minions imo to better fit the double agent vibe, and it should be a legendary (poor Chameleos)
    • anchorm4n - i hate it cause it would make Shudderwock decks even more frustrating. It's just a bit too much hard removal packed into a single card without any downside or requirement.
    • Wailor - I adore the art and i beg you to use it still for other ideas. The polymorph on hero power is not too great i fear. Mage has several ways to make their hp cost 0 and spam it on more targets in a single turn. This would become a new auto include hard removal combo in every control mage deck just like shaman does with [Hearthstone Card (Toxifin) Not Found] and [Hearthstone Card (Firamancer Murgl) Not Found]. An idea maybe worth trying something that poymorphs your own things in a good way. Sheep army. fear the sheep.

I've been meaning to more actively participate in these, but time irl stuff is rough. Inquisitor harkens back to Demonic Project, but the added ability to control what you transform and semi-control what your opponent transforms can lead to interesting gameplay patterns. Witchdoctor is another semi-support for Big Shaman, like Muckmorpher, but has the potential utility of removing an opponent's minion.

Wow, this does not have the participation I thought it would have. This isn't even a particularly complicated theme, so I'm not sure why.

In the case of Faceless Envoy, "[name of minion]" represents dynamic text that changes on the card itself as the game goes on, kinda like how Pathmaker works.

    Feedback

    Linkblade91
I do quite enjoy the concept. I would probably prefer it if it changed with each draw as opposed to just each turn, but this is perfectly fine.

    BasilAnguis

Oh hey, I remember this. Unfortunately I'm not so sure that this counts, but if it does, then it'd be kinda cool.

I do want to point out a text inconsistency here though. Balgruf says "reunite with her" whereas Yara just says "reunite". It'd look better if you choose one of these two wording conventions and used it on both cards.

    Anchorm4n

For the sake of safety, I think maybe raising the Cost to 7 is a good idea. The Hero Power also seems quite underpowered to me.

I wouldn't worry too much about the Frog token watermark honestly since basically everyone recognizes what it is.

    Wailor
This card is really funny in terms of its art and effect and how it all connects together. I like it. I'm not sure about balance, but I quite enjoy the general direction it's going.

    BloodMefist
Both are good cards, but I think Witty Witchdoctor is my favorite of the two because of how many different ways you can use it and I think it plays into the mechanics of the competition in a pretty nifty way.

I'm a little surprised about the participation as well, last week's theme was way more difficult imho... anyway, here's some feedback:

    Demonxz95
Both are cool, but Envoy is a little less exciting and just too blatantly working around the only 1 Legendary per deck rule for my taste. Wave of Evolution on the other hand goes down a newish path since there aren't many legendary spells in the game right now and the effect fits Shaman but is executed in a different way than usual. Nice work!
Regarding your feedback, do you think I should make my Hero Power targeted or just create a different one? I tend to just keep it as it is since the weak Hero Power balances out the pretty strong Battlecry of the hero card.

    BloodMefist
Both are well-designed and useful, but none of them has me terribly excited somehow. Can't really tell you why though… Don't get me wrong, I'll still give you 4 stars for each of them, it's just that last spark that's missing for me. Out of the two of them I'd probably go with the Shaman card even if it's a bit unlucky that we've both created "Witch Doctor" cards (that's a spelling error by the way… according to Wowpedia, you've got to make it two words -> "Witch Doctor") Fingers crossed rl stuff sorts itself out quickly and the way that's best for you!

    Wailor
I really really like it since it's both funny and pretty useful. That said, I much prefer the first (random) version for just the reasoning you've pointed out yourself.

    BasilAnguis
Very solid, interesting and well balanced card. The only gripe I have with it is that the art doesn't look much like Hearthstone. Are the characters WoW-lore based?

    linkblade91
I really like the flavor of the card and that it supports the SI:7 archetype. That said, I'd go with the one that copies the top card of your opponent's deck since it's way more interesting. I'm not sure if all out copying the card is the way to go here though, I feel like becoming a 1/1 copy would be better. You might not be able to fit that information into the textbox though. One of my favorites this week for sure anyway!

    Still very silent here...

    • BloodMefist - Efficacious Inqusitor seems a bit too derivative to my liking. The added left most condition makes it slightly more interesting but at the end its still a spell on a stick. Witty Witchdoctor harkens back to the big shaman archetype blizzard forgot about for some years now. Sadly I think it's anti synergistic with itself. If you have 2 of them in the deck you risk transforming into the second copy. And this itself is a rather bad minion to get off Eureka! or Muckmorpher so it wouldn't be played in those decks.
    • Demonxz95   -   Wave of Evolution strangely would probably be more played in an agrro deck. A weirder Embiggen for shaman. 3 drops for 1 mana, but you keep your card draw spells and burn. Well that's besides the point of the feedback. It's a decent card, might get downvited because of Deck of Lunacy PTSD. Faceless Envoy is strange to evaluate. Mostly it is the same as Flobbidinous Floop, but you dont get battlecries off. You probably meant it to be used in big minion combos which would work, and in that case it's a more restrictive Eternal Servitude.
    • anchorm4n - They aren't from WoW no. This is a legendary I created for a custom class which is themed around dragonborns and people with dragon ancestors. Funnily enough its super close to the Dracthyr that were revealed recently in WoW. Yara and Balgruf in my invented lore are a human and a dragon that fell in love and are one of the couples responsible for the existence of half dragon hybrids. I dont strive much, or at all to have hearthstone-like card art, mainly cause I dont like hearthstone card art in general lol. It looks like the cartoony art on the cardboard packaging of plastic action figures at the supermarket. Not that it's all bad, some is cool. I'll should stop ranting about this probably.

I think participation tends to go down as seasons progress, I'm afraid. Also, many people have exams around this date, so that's probably influential too.

I made a couple of new cards (both Polymorph-themed), but my card received better feedback than I expected, so I'm not sure if I should post them.

    Anyway, some feedback:

    linkblade91
I like both versions, but it's indeed low hanging fruit (I even used a card with a similar effect in a Halloween comp a couple years ago).

Among the two, I think I prefer the card that copies yourself, although it's less flavorful.

    BasilAnguis
In case it counts, I like the split and reunite flavor, but I think the end result isn't too unique (a big body with Taunt and Rush). I'd probably go for two keywords with stronger synergy, like Rush and Divine Shield.

    anchorm4n
The flavor is cool, but the Battlecry is too strong IMO. I think I'd make it 7 mana AND affect all minions, like Mass Polymorph.

I like the idea of using a non-transform HP, but if you decide to keep the current one, I'd make it targetable. Also, don't forget to write Hero Power (bolded) on top of it, like Fireblast and all other Hero Powers.

    Overall, good job!

    BloodMefist
I really like Witty Witch Doctor, probably my favorite card so far. It has a very creative use of transform, and its flexibility is very interesting (although the anti synergy with itself is a bit of an issue).

I'm afraid I don't like your other card. It's too similar to Demonic Project for my taste.

    Demonxz95
I like Wave of Evolution, it sounds like a very fun card (in case it doesn't turn out to be meta, that is).

The Faceless dude is a bit boring and similar to Faceless Manipulator.

Yeah, this is my final week of the college year, so between writing reports and studying for tests, I simply didn't feel like participating in feedback. Might be relevant for others as well.

Turned Witch Doctor into a spell based on feedback. I got a bit worried it was too similar to Eureka! (which I completely forgot existed), so I also made Ethereal Shadow Weaver which is more unique in its effect. Ill try to get feedback out at some point, but time constraints are rough, sorry y'all :(

Ethereal Shadow Weaver isn't allowed because it doesn't transform minions, and Mojo Mixing is too similar to Eureka!, as you said (I didn't remember that card, either.

I'd probably go back to Witty Witch Doctor, but I'd give it Tradeable (and a Stormwind watermark, of course). His appearance doesn't fit Stormwind, so I suggest an alternate potion merchant flavor.

In any case, I've decided to post my other cards just because of the low activity this weak. I'll probably go with some variation of Ovella, though.

Polymorph: Penguin shows what cross school synergy could look like, but the transform effect itself is as boring as it gets.

Polymorph: Bomb is big + wide removal all in one. I think it's my favorite of my cards, but I've already used it in another comp and it didn't do too well.

Both use existing minions as tokens, in Snowflipper Penguin and Explosive Sheep.
