Edwin bug?

Submitted 2 years, 2 months ago by

My opponent played Edwin, Defias Kingpin, played the next 2 cards, making him 8/8, then Shadowsteped him back to hand, then played him again and he was still 8/8, then gained even more stats as they played other cards. Surely this is a bug? Minions cannot keep stats gained on board once returned to hand.

Nope!  This was addressed not long after his release.  Devs stated he is working as intended.  However I thought he requires you to bounce him and then play another card that he drew to retain the stats though.  I Haven't really played him much myself in this manor, but I thought if you bounced him he goes back to base stats, but then if you play another card he drew while he's in your hand, the effect triggers again he has the stat retention at that point.  Could be wrong though.  Maybe all you have to do is bounce him and he'll retain the stats.

Huh, you're right. I just looked around. Funny that I never noticed this before. I have to say, I don't really care for it. It runs contrary to how every other card works.

Well, I do own the card, so maybe it's time for some miracle rogue.

I opened a golden copy on launch of the mini set, and I was so pumped for it!  Then I rarely played it.  But because they buffed it and it was suddenly too good, after the eventual nerf back to the original state I DE'd it, crafted a regular copy because it's still good, and got a free legendary out of it.

So when you bounce Edwin, it has regular stats in hand; when you play it, it has regular stats; and only when you play card drawn from it, it finally remembers its buff, right? And it is intended behaviour?

But it defias logic, goes against standard HS mechanics and isn't at least hinted in card text.

It reminds me about old bug with Saidan the Scarlet when it didn't double handbuffs until you played a new buff on it.

It doesn't defy logic or mechanics at all. Bouncing only removes self enchantments, and Edwin's effect isn't technically self-applied. He places an enchantment on the card you draw, which grants that card the effect to give Edwin +2/+2, draw a card, and enchant the card you drew. Since it's possible for minions to gain stats while in hand, Edwin continues to gain stats off the enchanted cards.

This is just one of those things that you'll only know from experience, because the card description doesn't clarify this interaction even in the slightest.

Edwin's effect will continue to happen within the turn he's played, regardless of his position. So even if you bounce him twice in the same turn he'll still grow as long as you continue to play the card drawn.

Does it defy hearthstone's prior established logic? Yes, because there's no other card that works the same way. But just like Rattlegore mechanics, if team5 wills it, then it shall be done.

Stiltstepper works the same way. If you play the card, bounce Stiltstepper, then play the drawn card, you still get the Attack buff.
