The "Downvote Effect"

Submitted 5 years, 4 months ago by

Hi, my dear mods and administrators from Out of Cards!!! :) I have noticed something that really pisses me off lately... :( Since Hearthpwn doesn't have a negative vote system on the forums (only on the comments section), people are forced to make posts if they want to really express their opinion against something or someone they don't like, but here, on OOC, many people just downvote others without saying absolutely nothing and there is no room for discussion!!! :(

Ok, ok, I realized I love to be downvoted, it makes me feel good (and powerful XD) for whatever reason, but as I said, many times it prevents discussions that could have been interesting and entertaining. So, what is your opinion about it? Is this good for the forum and the community, or not? We are a community after all, and a community needs real communication, that's what I think... -.-

From what I understood within your post and here on your first post, I believe you want to know who gave + or - to assert your rights or stop the manipulations. While it sounds reasonable, I think that not knowing who gave upvotes or downvotes -except site Staff for security/privacy reasons- are better, not because I don't care but because one would speak up by himself/herself assuming that he/she is reasonable like me.

In short, what I am getting at is, trust the site Staff and tell them if there's any problem such as manipulations but not if there's something trivial. I mean, have a look at my comment (voted as -4), yet I didn't report it because...

    • I wasn't trolling there. My comment was honest that I just wanted to relate Plague of Flames with Darkest Hour.
    • Thus, there were no manipulations. People thought that I was wrong, so that I was down-voted.
    • There were no personal attacks.

I believe this is how OoC Staff acts regarding + and - votes. Maybe I'm wrong but that's how I think. Hope I was clear enough.

No, no, don't get me wrong, I don't want to remove the option to downvote others. I just want people to be forced to post if they downvote other user's post (or something like that), that is all (just as you did, hehe, so thank you!!! XD).

    1. You say  downvoting "makes me feel good (and powerful)"

    2. You compare OoC with Hearthpwn, where the only differce between them is site design (you can stay in Hpwn if you like it more)

So why you want to change the downvote system here and why do you even care how many downvotes you get?

I will counter your argument with a 180 - having a downvote system gets rid of a certain level of toxicity. Ppl can voice their disagreement with the comment without having to post "clever" responces to diss the person. I know that you live for those, well, you will just have to deal with that :) Im sure you will get some anyways.

    1. It was just a joke, dude... XD

    2. I want to stay on this forum mostly because there are a lot of friendly faces here. The best and nicest users from Hearthpwn moved here (with some exceptions), and I also like Flux and the mods a lot!!! :)

I suppose there is a natural human response when you see someone has obviously disliked your post to want to at least understand why.

I can get behind that sentiment; if your post was wrong or bad, feedback about why is helpful.

In hindsight, I guess thats partly why sites like Facebook removed the option to downvote because it feels like the option only exists to upset people. Perhaps its just a minor thing but I agree with what Sherman’s getting at.

To be honest with you, I do this. Not because I necessarily disagree with whatever the title is, but because some posts are just straight up low effort content, not saying yours is.

Like fucking look at the forums and tell me if you see a familiar topic. That’s right, four months after rotation, on a new site, where new ideas and conversations can be had, we still have “Idea to nerf Genn & Baku” shitposts popping up.

So take a grain of salt with upvotes/downvotes, I don’t know how long you’ve been playing, so I don’t know your experiences within the game. But what I can tell you, is that if you see a post getting downvoted even if it seems reasonable to respond, it’s because people have either already seen it or are tired of talking about it

Sorry, I read the whole post and answers, and this made my day XD The post (out of nowhere), the profile pic (looking like lost in time and space), man...

Now, yeah, there should be a system where, if you downvote/upvote, you give a why, but more importantly if you downvote, cause normally there are lots of toxic people that just downvote for the sake of downvoting

I always had unconvinced opinions about the whole downvoting system, in any portion of the website, because it is sometimes used to bash people, while i give it's also useful, in average, to kinda educate the users to polite and constructive behavior.

But forcing people to post pretty much kills the whole purpose of a fast and anonymous reaction.

At that point, it's just better to remove the button.

If the system was used in a constructive way, I think it would be fine - the problem however, is that anonymity breeds negativity on the internet (usually).

An example of this can be seen when a new card is revealed and someone posts something innocuous like “I like this card.” And then gets a dozen downvotes because it wasn't the card that some other angrypeople wanted. There’s not much there in the way of constructive criticism and the poster can feel victimised just for liking a card - that sort of thing can drive users away out of fear that voicing anything positive will be mocked or hated, seemingly without reason.

I totally agree, which is why i am unconvinced of downvoting as a whole. There is an upside, but the downside is probably just as strong.

But forcing a comment feels clunky. Yes, it would prevent some toxicity, but probably it would also generate more spam, or simply drive away users because of clunkyness.

At that point, no downvoting is is  best solution.

Yesterday, I noticed one of your comment - Sherman1986's views on female streamers - was trending in the negative alley, and I almost replied back to you : ''Classic Sherman, taunting others and then wondering why the hell is everyone just downvoting instead of engaging in a constructive dialogue?'' - but I didn't, because some trolls are better left trolling alone. I'm not reducing you to only that nor am I saying that you are solely a troll and nothing else, but you have to admit that half of your inputs are not promoting any discussion either. I know you have a thick skin and that you are way over those positive/negative internet points, but still, there is room for improvement.
Be the positivity you want to see :)

On a related note, the downvote effect is a real thing. Just like some people are famous for being famous, some comments are being downvoted because they were already downvoted. Call it conformism, bandwagon, peer pressure or simply wanting to fit in or comfort your ego with others opinions. It has a lot to do with social desirability ; some opinions are obviously easier to endorse and rally around.

Best of luck with your social media usage :)

Hehehe... XD Thanks for this comment!!! :D

I suppose you are right... I should adapt to the new circumstances, instead of complaining about them. That's what smart people do after all... I'm going to try to promote discussion on the forum as much as I can while being positive and friendly most of the time. I really don't care about negative votes, they are inevitable, but having some nice conversations with people all around the world is really everything I want here. :)

Seems like an arbitrary thing tbh. Downvotes are "I don't like this but I don't feel the need to explain" and the same goes for upvotes being for things one does agree with with no additional information to add.

it's not that people should be forced to add comment if they simply disagree, because someone can just as easily ignore a comment if there's no downvote option and the effect is now the OP of that comment wondering "Did they disagree or just not see it?" Either outcome doesn't matter because without response or downvote, there was no positive response.

I like the downvote option, since I'll usually voice my opinion if I want to add to the discourse, but the option to simply say "Nah" in a generalized way is better than posting a single "Nah" if I want to disagree without expounding. Trying to force dialogue isn't better than allowing it to happen when users want it engage.

Rage quitting: the best way to ensure your opponent knows they beat a giant baby.

I like how I can't tell if the people downvoting Sherman's OP are seriously triggered or doing it ironically like me because he said he likes downvotes.  Don't know whether to up or downvotes those -1s either (nor if those -1s are serious).  Well done; you've made the system completely meaningless, at least in this thread :D

I don't like to waste my time downvoting someone else.
If I totally disagree with the post, I usually prefer to express my opinion about it.

You should not care about what peoples do, because sometimes they don't have any good damn word to say.

If there is a "downvote effect" it's people's tendency to express themselves once they've seen a sufficient number of others do the same. If a post gets more than say 3 up/downvotes it will tend to accumulate these even if it's not a spectacularly good or bad post.

That said I don't think you can really draw any inferences from people's voting habits to if/how they otherwise express themselves. For all you know some people are more inclined to post a critical reply once they see it's "safe" by the fact that the rest of the forum has already nuked the OP with downvotes.

Meh... Most people out of there are too shy to truly express themselves, especially nowadays, even on the internet. They live in fear of saying what they really think in terror of not being accepted by others, but not me. ;) Although it's not always effective (well, most of the time it's not :P), forcing dialogue is a way to reveal the hidden truth. Of course, you have to pay a lot of attention to people's comments because usually the truth is hidden on their mistakes (and I'm not talking about grammar ones). ;)

But c'mon guys, my latest posts don't have enough downvotes, I want you to... HIT ME!!! XD XD XD

For me at least, it's a matter of making the future more convenient for myself rather than needing acceptance.  More recently however, I've come to understand that the alternative can also be valuable in addition to a lot of fun.  It's still tough to break the habit, but I'm getting there, in part thanks to you.  You are such a bad influence!

I don't like the Downvote option because it seems to be used to merely say "I disagree with your post" rather than to penalise spammers, trolls or downright idiotic posts. I find that it breeds a negative atmosphere and turns me off from participating or posting any remotely controversial.

It's mostly for the irony, BTW I downvoted every post of Sherman in this thread for the same reason.

BTW nice quad post 0 shame in doing it.

HIT ME!!! XD XD XD

You know what Sherman, while surfing forums on Hearthpwn era and reading your comments, I always thought you are a "honest troll", who likes to make a fun of people's mistakes or bad mouths or trash talks or whatever you call it. I believe that it's not because you want to inflate your ego -as average trolls do that a lot- but because you like to show people's mistakes in a manner of criticism, with a comedian's mind along the way. This is what I should call as "satiric comedy", which I like that in a person. As I quoted your two posts above, I have no doubts that you are in the middle of a fine line, both as a "troll" and as a "comedian", thus being a good guy.

My English might not be that good, but these are my points and I stand firm. I look forward to make me laugh 😄

Trying to force dialogue isn't better than allowing it to happen when users want it engage.

"Bad influence"??? Ok, ok, don't tell your parents about it or they aren't going to allow you to hang out with me anymore, my friend!!! :P :P :P

I don't like the Downvote option because it seems to be used to merely say "I disagree with your post" rather than to penalise spammers, trolls or downright idiotic posts. I find that it breeds a negative atmosphere and turns me off from participating or posting any remotely controversial.

Yeah, that is probably the reason why some Hearthpwners with a very polemic and critical attitude towards Blizzard and/or the community are still, well, on Hearthpwn... :P

Wow, did you seriously call me a good guy??? That's something rare to say about my persona on these forums, but I apreciate it a lot. Thank you very much!!! :) :) :)

It's true, I love comedy and my purpose on this life is to have as much fun as I can. Of course, sharing that fun with all of you makes everything much better, so I'm really glad I can make you laugh from time to time!!! :D :D :D

Oh, and don't worry about your English when having a conversation with me, Esparanta, it's perfect in my eyes, hehe. ;) ;) ;)

Yesterday, I noticed one of your comment - Sherman1986's views on female streamers

Q: How many fedoras do you own?

Sherman: Many, but why do you ask???

How did I miss that?  This is too funny xD

I can't believe people are not only taking your post seriously, but mine too.  I thought it was super obvious.  How can this many people be so clueless???

Apparently not everyone can understand how serious you were being (which is not at all lol)

Well, people is just being, well... people. :P I upvoted your comment because you made me laugh a lot and knew you wasn't serious, but probably it should be the only upvote your post should have considering the circumstances. XD

What? Off-Topic? Why? You are getting a lot of feedback for this amazing and wonderful new forum because all of this, moving this thread to the Off-Topic section doesn't make any sense to me... Could you explain your decision, please? I'm not going to tell you what to do, especially because you are a mod, but I would appreciate a nice explanation here. :) :) :)

The deal with upvoting and downvoting is that a lot of people don't know what it means and use it according to their own perception of the world. In the end, it's pretty meaningless to focus on it all or worry about lost opportunities for discussion. There might not have been anything to talk about and the downvote was intended to be positive. You'd be surprised to learn how many people downvote something because they agree with the negative statement in the post or comment.

Yeah, but I'm not surprised at all. I use Facebook from time to time and have seen this kind of things plenty of times there (even on Youtube).

Don't mind me, I'm a simple person; if something is entertaining, I'll be there.  Thank you for making the place more entertaining.  No one else could have generated several triggered posts from just a single misplaced "cute" in a comment

Edit: Now we have someone comparing you to robbers and criminals.  Because of "cute".  wtf xD
