New Neutral Minion - Zephrys the Great

A new Legendary Neutral Minion, Zephrys the Great, has been revealed!

Zephrys the Great Card Image

  • Card pool for the offered cards is Basic + Classic sets
  • The three options will be cards that will help in your current situation, usually aoe/single target removal/proactive card (minion)
    • Ex.: You are at 7 mana and opponent has many minions > get a board clear like Flamestrike
  • Offered cards have to be interesting, no Bloodfen Raptor :(
  • They created Zephrys because they wanted a cool highlander card similar to Kazakus, so these decks would be worth playing
  • They initially didnt know if Zephrys mechanic would be technically possible to do and went through at least 5 variations before settling on the final one, one of which was to offer a card from your collection

  • Wow this card is so cool. Dynamically assesses the state of the match and offers you the perfect cards. This will be a gold craft for sure. 

  • As cool as this is, I'm not sure if its enough to push highlander into standard. Can definitely see it seeing play in any wild highlander deck though

      This card will analyze your deck, and the current state of the match, and so it will grant you the perfect card, if you are losing the board it will give you a board clear, if you are low on health, will give you heals, empty hand? will bring you a card generation card, etc. 

      we saw it getting played turn 2 on stream twice, which is too early for the card to analyze, and both times the options were the same, all of them were 3 mana, they are kinda the perfect cards for 2 reasons:

      - Curve cards, you play it on next turn. 

      - since you are early in the game zephyr gave you a ramp card, a tempo card, and a card generation card, which is always a great start if you pick anyone from the three.

I don’t want an algorithm to come to his aid with a perfect answer to my game without a) him doing anything to “earn” that and b) me having any chance whatsoever to prevent him from doing that. This is the one an only card that can really be labeled “unfair”

      chill out bro, the card gives you an advantageous card at the price of building a deck with 1 copy only of each card (inconstistent). Basically every card in the game worth playing in the game does a variation of that (giving you advantage at a cost

    • Your point a is not so correct. He has made his whole deck a one of each card, wich is a big sacrifice. At least I think the opponent has done enough to earn this.

      I really prefer this to them getting answers out of the blue with random chance, at least they have to pay for the privilege with their deck building. This card is a lot more skill based as well since all three cards SHOULD be decent for the situation and therefore it actually asks for decisions to be made unlike with Discover (I love discover but it often gives you three cards of which only one is worth taking). I also don't think this is unfair and I'd say that there are many cards that ARE unfair especially in wild.

  • This is the kind of design that makes Hearthstone unique.  Very interesting and powerful!  I just hope the highlander decks are good enough that this will see play.

  • I don't like how it will only grant you cards from Classic and Basic sets. I get that it's difficult to add other sets to the AI but... meh, Hall of Fame will gradually make this card worse IMO.

    Still going to craft it as soon as I can though.

  • Okay so for the people asking what it actually does: It looks at the board and lets you discover a card out of 3 options from the basic and classic set. Now it says "perfect card" right, so it will literally give you the best card you could ask for, for your specific situation. If theres a lot of enemy minions it will give you boardclears, if the board is empty itll give you value etc.. 

    The Card seems so sick man I am so excited for this. 
    And btw Im sure this is the card they said was so difficult to make !

  • It looks at the board state and gives you a 3 card option. Cards can be from any class. It prioritizes cards that can be played this turn and then next turn. It sounds like based on how "clear" what kind of card you need is, it will try to give you more of that option. For example, if the opponent has a lot of minion and you have nothing, it might offer you 3 different board clears instead of just 1. The example we saw is Kibler played it on turn 2 on an empty board and was offered three 3 mana tempo plays for next turn (wild growth, brightwing, animal companion)

      [edit] Btw since this is a battlecry effect, it has good synergies with the shaman quest. I'm going to include this minion in my jade shudder deck.

      yes, one of the options should be a healing card as well,

      Yes, they said that in a specific situation like this for example, it would actually offer you two or even three aoes, just to tell you "you really need to clear this board!" :D and gives you option like Brawl, so you can play something else on your turn or Twisting Nether, if you want to be sure everything dies etc.

        Yes, ty. I understood that. But I wanted to ask something else (it was my mistake for not being clear in my post). I meant to ask whether I would get ONLY board clears as discovery options, but kingcolor answered my question.

  • Man, just came back from the Stream Zephrys the Great seems like such a cool card that the Blizzard team designed. I would really like to see like a Behind the scenes of how the process of making this card came about. A card that reads the situation and give you the best 3 options (From the Basic and Classic set) for you to choose. If this card consistently works the way they have explained it It will easily be one of the best cards they have ever made.

    NOW from the Standard point of view I have to play a bit of Devil's advocate. Will Reno-style decks make it into the competitive meta? There is no doubt in my mind that Zephrys the Great is an amazing card but will he (and the other reno style Legendary) be enough in standard to become competitively viable? My guess is yes but we'll have to wait and see

  • This seems kind of nutty.  So if your opponent is at 6 health this will always give a fireball?  jeeez.  really interesting card.  can't wait to play around with it.

  • I didn't watch the stream but it sounds like this is no different from a Discover effect - so why didn't they just use the "Discover" keyword instead? "Wish for the perfect card" makes it sound like you will be given one card with no choice involved. 

    Sadly, it seems that Blizzard has sacrificed clarity and consistency for flavor (using "wish" because he is a Djinni).

      Why is that sad? it's a one of and very unique card that will be very well known.  Going for the flavor is cooler and better. 

      You could even make the argument that "wish" is different than discover because discover is always from a set pool (random spell, random mage minion, cards in your deck).  This will give you certain cards in certain spots 100% of the time based on an algorithm which isn't random and is unlike discover, but i don't think that is an argument worth having.

        it is not just the flavor or analyzing the state of the game. Discover gives options from Your Class unless it is specified like Kabal Courier. As we can see on last match, Zephrys the Great gives also options from different classes like how Kibler got Brawl, Flamestrike and Ancient of War as playing mage. So this makes Wish a different mechanic than Discover.

        So I don't think inconsistency here is wrong or it is even an inconsistency. It is completely a different mechanic.

  • I'm ready to see this card regularly appear in Trolden videos. It's really bonkers. 

  • You won't see this often in Standard. Wild, another story.

    Wild doesn't see Bomb Warrior (Big Priest, Quest Mage, Even and Control Shaman are all bad matchups for it, and those decks should remain to be the top of wild), so expect this funky wish card along with the Uldum-flavored Reno and Co. to be seen there where bombs can't screw up the deck.

    Most tech cards in wild are to prevent OTKs or 1-cost spells, so at worst it might get yanked out of your hand or deck.

    /Big Priest often isn't fast enough against Quest Mage and shaman can ruin its minions, so that deck may see less play. Jade Druid might be returning in its place in Wild though, and that doesn't help slow warrior decks.

  • This card might actually be enough for Reno decks to see play in Standart... If only Bomb Warrior wouldnt exist. 10/10 for Wild tho, neutral Kazakus is great.

  • I don't think this card will make highlander decks viable in standard. Zephrys the Great might be on par with Kazakus and since the prior minion can give you the perfect answer once you wish for it, he could be better in some situations, but the standard highlander decks don't have a win-condition nor the needed support for that matter (like Reno Jackson). You trade in consistency for what?

    If standard Reno Mage had at least some of the defensive tools, which its wild counterpart posseses (Volcanic Potion, Dragon's Fury, Meteor), I would have been more optimistic. But they don't have those, they can't protect themselves against mech hunter and the other swarm decks. They need both copies of Doomsayers and Frost Novas/Blizzard. They also can't outvalue control warrior (Omega Assembly, Dr. Boom, Mad Genius) and will be hard countered by Bomb Warrior. So tell me, what will the highlander decks aim for once then arrive in standard? I'm seeing them mostly as wild cards. Elise the Enlightened has some potential to be used in a normal duplicate combo deck - you just have to cycle a lot of cards and barely reach fatigue, in order to activate her.

    And don't get me wrong, I love wild and I would gladly play them there, since most of them are really good. But I feel like new or standard players would be really disappointed if they open those legendaries from packs and can't use them anywhere outside dead archtypes.

  • I think this card will finally make me want to try Wild. Crafting back all those cards I disenchanted over the years will hurt though :( 

  • 1. Plays my favorite card Beryllium Nullifier (I don't play that anymore, but let's just imagine...)

    2. Your opponent plays Zephyrs the Great

    3. Gets silenced from owl, which is obtained from Zephyrs.

    4. Starts crying in the corner.

    Joke aside, if they, however, implemented this situation where you are going against heavy buffed minion with spell immunity, then gives you owl, this card will be hot.

  • Absolutely worthless in Wild: 2-3 secrets up, doesn't even consider Flare. (Which would be the GO TO CARD in these Match-Ups!). Instead I'm always getting SI:7 Infiltrator, which frankly speaking is ok when playing against 1 (ONE) secret, but 2+x???

      Programming is a little buggy here.  What helps is forcing the mana issue.  If you can lower the mana available after Zeph is played to 3 you'll be offered flair.  In an ideal world I would like him to consider both as a choice but they have been good about updating his programming as time goes on.  Forcing the mana issue or setting up lethal is important before you play him.  Also need to consider things like opponent's life before you play him.  Practice makes perfect, but he's a extremely potent when you get really good with him.  And by potent I mean I love Pyroblasting warriors FTW over their taunt wall.

        Exaclty like he said! - most of the time i need him for secret destruction it works as Trollbert stated !

        and i like it that they still do tests with him and i also think that they will give more Patches in the Future regarding the cards he can give you!

        And also as the card says "wish for the perfect card" - does not mean you will get the Best outcome!
