Anyone remember Taverns of Time?
So last year around this time (6/11) there was an event called Taverns of Time. As a quick overview it featured about 30 unique Tavern Brawl exclusive cards. Most of it revolved around the Caverns of Time scenario from world of warcraft.
Some of the stuff from taverns of time is complementing stuff added in rise of shadows. Possibility Seeker was a 4 mana 4/5 shuffle your hand into your deck draw that many cards. Warlock has Plot Twist which is basically the same effect but as a spell. Cavern Dreamer adds a 2 or less mana cost spell to your hand at the end of turn. It was introduced in an era where mages were playing mostly 5+ mana spells. Right now we have cyclone mage instead which is pretty much the polar opposite. Fatecleaver seems like an interesting, and extreme, counter to Pogo rogue although the tavern set also introduced infinite minions with similar properties. Also noteworthy was that there were two named wow characters: Chromie and Murozond.
So if Rise of the Mechs is an event this year that focuses on the second set of last year. Was taverns of time a cheeky way to hint at the second set of this year from last year?

Taverns of Time was nothing more than a fun event centered around Toki. And I don't remember specific cards made for Brawl. I do remember special event cards for Arena. While some of those cards may have been tests for ideas later used in future sets, I think you're reading into it a little too much. I mean the effect from playing Possibility Seeker became Plot Twist, however, the RoS cards would have been in very early development still when the Taverns event happened. See what I mean? Hinting at future cards: maybe not. Using them later as inspiration: definitely.
Also, your Mage example seems a little weak. Mage has almost always been more about tempo and spells. But when your strongest win condition is [Hearthstone Card (Frostlich Jaina) Not Found] you have to find a way to survive until the late game and that's what Big Spell Mage did. That and it paired well with [Hearthstone Card (Dragoncaller Allana) Not Found]. Clear out aggro boards until they run out of steam or until you can play your DK, start making Water Elementals and get to Lifestealing the crap out of your opponent's minions and face.
I will say that I was just thinking yesterday about the Fire Festival we've had for two consecutive years now in Hearthstone. It started last year right after the Taverns event. I guess the free legendary is the extra rewards this time instead of extra gold and free dust. But I do hope we see a double gold event again for the Fire Festival this year! Maybe a special legendary quest or two as well.
Quick! Someone give me something clever to write here.
I think you are a bit confused :D Even tho it was called Taverns of Time, the event was Arena centric, the cards were added to Arena, not to Brawl! :)

I remember the [Hearthstone Card (Infinite Murlocs) Not Found] from that arena. It felt like it was almost a good card, but shame it was so slow.
Pretty much Pogo-Hopper. Except you have to shuffle them yourself, but they grow twice as fast.
It rly looked like Blizzard was trying out different wacky abilities and quite a few of them made it to the game eventually, as mentioned already as well.
