EDIT: Will Ascendant/Ascended be a new tribe, something like Dragon or Elite?
This is what I see as the most likely thing.
Ascended are immortal Shuriman god-warriors that have gained their power from the Sun Disc. The Expansion trailer showed us Renekton (the crocodile), Nasus (the jackal), and emperor Azir (the hawk), who are all Ascended and likely to a) feature in the expansion b) belong to the tribe.
A stall promoting landmark that most likely wins you the lategame but at the same time removes a large portion of you deckbuilding options... on a landmark that has it's deck fall apart on the spot if the opponen has landmark removal -> forcing landmark removal artificially into the meta if it should be a decent archetype? Now that is a great way to promote new content AND boring gameplay. Who would not love this card concept?
I definitely underestimated Crabrider. Turns out cheese paladin is a deck which this guy slots right into it as both removal and a massive threat if it's paired with two Murloc Warleader.
Overestimate would be Ace Hunter Kreen. Thought that card would go into most demon hunter and hunter decks. But eventually it only saw some play in highlander hunter, I think? Before Rexxar decided that face is the place with his highlander deck too and opted for a much faster build. I guess demon hunters never really needed him since it didn't really fit with their gameplan?
The Core set won't contain anything close to "all the essential cards". There are still lots of relevant cards you want to collect from expansions, and you'll need your own copies if you want to keep using them in the Wild and Classic formats after they leave the Core set.
It'll be enough for everyone to get started, and will remain relevant as years pass and Hearthstone evolves, but it's not enough to undermine the concept of a collectible game.
You won't own those cards forever, as they are temporary copies; moreover, we have no guarantee the Core set will have just essential cards - if Renounce Darkness will be included, will you consider it an essential card?
On a final note, what you say is not wrong, but you also have to consider that the game is 7 years old and many players (included myself) started just a few years ago: there's a big gap that can't be easily filled, but this Core set seems the most reasonable solution to me.
That is pretty impressive to be where you are after only a year of play. If you can make it to Diamond 3, you can make it to Legend. You just need to have time to grind, and pay attention to the meta and what works/doesn't. I opened this thread recently, and there is a lot of good advice: https://outof.cards/forums/hearthstone/deck-building/7476-help-me-reach-legend
I'm interested to see if they use the Core set as a way to give good support to particular archetypes for a year, knowing they can remove that support next year. They already allow the last expansion of a year to be strong because it will be in Standard for the least time, and Core cards can be around for even less time, so it would be a consistent approach.
With that in mind, maybe they really want to try to get an OTK rogue to work this year and include Evasion to help with that. It's not like the community has a grudge against the archetype at the moment. When did we last see one have any meta relevance? Miracle rogue?
So yeah, Cheat Death would be an awful idea, but Evasion can be justified and brand new secrets can easily be designed to not cause trouble.
What I wonder regarding the new core set is if Blizzard is aware that lending the collectibles (even temporarily) destroys the concept of a collectibles game...
If every season all of us are to be lent all the essential cards free of charge... what is the point of collecting cards then? What is the benefit of having already those cards in my collection?

Can someone explain if I get this right? I read Restored Sun Disc description, it mentions Ascendants. When I google "ascendant runeterra", i get this:
https://leagueoflegends.fandom.com/wiki/Ascended
Does this mean that all the heroes in the list that are in Runneterra right now will get 3rd level? Or am I completely mad?

Imprisoned Phoenix OTK!
This deck looks fun, and is surprisingly budget. I'll have to try it out soon!
