  • Full Dust Refunds for the December 2020 Hearthstone Card Nerfs End Soon!

Thanks for that reminder, never would have remembered - decided to just craft the Legendaries in gold and DE the originals :)

Small things to point out, Blazing Battlemage fails the Class rule since its Neutral, High Exarch Yrel fails the Tribe rule and so does Recurring Villain.

  • Oops! All Spells! - Card Design Competition Discussion Thread

I don't know why but I just felt like none of these really stuck with me so I just made multiple cards.

I made most of these cards thinking that you could still run most of these cards with minions in your deck but also have enough incentive to run no minions.

No Man's Land is my try at a balance between Overgrowth and Nourish but I feel like the card's flawed since it's hard to use.

Harvest the Weak is a card that I thought of for No Minion Warlock since Warlocks probably would die along the way if they had no minions, and it still feels alright to play when you run minions in your deck.

Last Stand and Meditation feel too weak for me because they don't give a reason to run no minions in the deck. I was mainly just thinking of flavor for those two.

I'm liking No Man's Land mainly because I think it's balanced and has good flavor.

    Feedback:

Demonxz95 - The card is pretty good in terms of flavor and balance but it feels like a card that doesn't push Shamans to run 0 minions in the deck.

DavnanKillder - Lithomancy's Forge feels like it has one too many lines of text while it does almost nothing. This is card is relatively weak as well since you can't really determine when you draw your weapon and in the late game it won't do anything. My suggestion is probably making it a card that uses a weapon in hand to gain armor and then if you have no minions you just cast Reckless Flurry.

Nature's Channeling needs to be clarified a bit as Wailor said, I'm not sure what it does with Fandral Staghelm. Also, it's potentially really strong. I remember when Oasis Surger was really good and this seems to be in that power level, maybe a bit better since you don't have to play it on an awkward turn and just cast it turn 1 with Lightning Bloom.

linkblade91 - Thanks for clarifying that you can use minions. I was planning to make a Paladin Legendary minion that is based on the Silver Hand Recruit as well but I refrained after seeing the overlap and your card is miles better than what I had intended to make. My only fear with the card is that you could play this in Even Paladin but honestly, I wouldn't even be sure how that would work.

anchorm4n - Light the Fuses! is really strong even as a base card. I suggest toning it down a bit.

I'm not a fan of Staff of Souls since it's a Legendary and your entire deck depends on it and even then it could still fail miserably, so it's a bit weak. Probably up the price and make it so that casting spells will summon random demons of the same cost.

clawz161 - Not sure how I feel about having a building as a Legendary minion like Blackhowl Gunspire, I think it's ok? Though your card does have problems. The first one is the wording of your cards, Recruitment Office should read "If your deck has no other minions, transform your Hero Power into Conscription." and Conscription should read that it summons a random minion. Secondly, it's a Mech for some reason. It shouldn't be a Mech since it's a building. Balancewise, I think Conscription is a bit too random for me to say it's strong but consistent enough to make me think it's playable. Can't say for sure if it's strong or weak but I like it a lot.

The new formats must also fulfill that one corporate criteria of generating profit. Duels fulfilled it via paywall and heroics mode, and so it follows that if a new format must be introduced at all, I'm sure it must go the same route; either paywalling certain features, or present a tacit requirement for players to spend some* money to have fun in it.

I personally like the idea of a rotating 'limited wild' system, with the cards available for this format to change with every expansion. Will certainly be easier to balance, and will allow us to play with decks from previous metas. It wouldn't even take team5 that much to make it happen. But I hold little hope of seeing this ever coming through. Unless there's some pass you have to buy (either in gold or real money) every expansion to play this mode, I just can't see this design document ever getting past management approval.

I would have thought it would help monetise Wild all by itself, at least enough to cover the small cost of implementing it (they don't need to do anything at all to support it beyond choosing new sets every so often). It would actually push people to buy Wild packs, whereas at the moment most Wild players already have what they need for the slowly changing meta and only buy Standard packs.

It would certainly push wild pack sales if this was implemented, but there will come a time when nearly all serious players would already have all the wild cards they need and then the sales will come crashing to a halt, which will ironically come faster than we think because of the duplicate protection. That's probably why it hasn't been implemented yet, despite the fact that it wouldn't even come to close to the resources needed to implement the duels mode.

There needs to be a monetization system for this mode that is equal if not surpassing that of duels for this to ever be a realistic consideration. Sadly that's the kind of world we live in with activision-blizz

I'm not so doubtful they would consider it. A bit of digging found this article from ~10 months ago, where Dean Ayala asked about whether there were any "rotating format ideas [we] liked a lot": https://outof.cards/hearthstone/854-blizzards-dean-ayala-talks-about-no-plans-for-wild-nerfs-asks-the-community-about-rotating-formats. If that was February, and they heard a lot of pleas for a rotating Wild format, it could plausibly have made its way onto the year plan in April as the hidden new game mode for phase 3.

As it stands, HS is failing to tap into the advantages of digital games being able to sell old packs to new players, and it cannot be that hard to convince the accounting department with the prospect of a permanent trickle of income from the entire history of the game for a low initial cost of setting it up.

Yeah I remembered that. That was what led me to believe that the incoming new format was going to be exactly a rotating wild mode. Then reality hit and we got duels instead, which incidentally enough, also came with the idea of a rotating set. Maybe the stars will align and limited wild gets considered in some distant future. But its becoming clear from battlegrounds and now duels, that unless a strong and subtle monetary system can be jammed, crying and screaming, right into it, I'm not optimistic.

    Just make Duels playable, maybe?

  • Rewards Track: Current progress

Minor update, I just reached level 125 (by playing a few hours daily). I should be still on track to complete the entire reward track before the year of the phoenix ends.

How many of you have gotten the Challenge a friend. You both earn a reward! 1500 XP quest already? I have several F2P accounts and still no sight of this particular quest. I'm probably biased, but I have a gut feeling the drop rate of this quest is much lower than the others.

I remember what it was, it was the Doom in the Tomb event where a number of cards came back and created a meta which funnily enough, was defined by Evolve Shaman. I didn't like that event itself since the Wild cards stayed for wat too long, but I wouldn't be opposed to something similar happening again.

I think we can both agree that's hardly a fair assessment since team5 cherry picked cards from multiple expansions and grafted them onto standard. Either way, I didn't actually have any problems with it, since evolve shaman then was what I would call "manageable", hardly the same bs we are encountering right now. Like yourself, I would like to see more regular events like it in future.

The tavern brawl I cited provides a more accurate picture, and as I have mentioned, it was to me a great success.

An idea i had. I always like the idea of paladins conscripting people that wouldn't normally be in their army, like ogres or giants, trolls, or beasts.

This card turns off its own effect, since it is itself a minion in your deck.

  • Duels is freaking awful....

I do have high hopes for it but it will need some pretty radical changes to become fun. Stale is the word. To win you just color by numbers looking for the key factors that win games. I love the attempt at making it creative but at the moment it just isn't.

The Grand Plaza all day, every day until February 9th. Sounds like a wonderful opportunity to work through my Steam backlog, work out, or do just about anything other than playing LoR.

  • It's time for Hearthstone to have a new Format.

I wouldn't mind a format that is based around a rotating theme. E.g., maybe they have the theme be Explorers for ~3 months, and you are allowed to use cards from Saviors of Uldum and League of Explorers and a few select others that synergize with them. Somewhat comparable to MtG's "blocks", if you're familiar with that format.

I've always been a little sad that Blizzard puts so much effort into lore and backstory and aesthetics, but it all goes to the wayside if the cards themselves can't beat whatever the standard meta is at that time.

I dusted Brann. After riding highlander Hunter to Legend for the first time a few months back, I have no urge to ever play that deck again.

My first idea is for Warrior, probably one of the harder classes this week:

I've tried to design it in a way that's useful even if the requirement isn't met. Just a reminder: with Dr. Boom, Mad Genius in play, the Boom Bots have Rush.

    Will add feedback tomorrow.

Edit: Second idea. Not quite as creative, but I had to get it out of my head.

Which one do you prefer and why?

  • Duels is freaking awful....

    Quote From Koetti

I wouldn't say that it's awful, but it definitely needs some work and fine tuning.

I hope they can balance it by putting some treasures into different buckets to prevent a few broken combos (like Cannibalism and the Swamp Creature one). I also hope they ban some more cards. I'm sick and tired of facing C'Thun, the Shattered every second game.

It's completely new, so Blizzard at least has the opportunity to collect some data, see what works, and tweak accordingly.

Quick question, are minions with this effect allowed? If it's a Legendary minion and the only minion you run, it works right?

That is correct. I was thinking of posting something to that effect. Doesn't even need to be a Legendary; if you want to risk bricking yourself, that's on you lol

While I'm here, this is my initial idea. Not a big fan of it, but my attention is on my Alraune class at the moment. I'll keep it in the back of my mind. She's Even-costed to avoid the Odd spamming in Wild; you need to run a "regular"-costed deck with this, otherwise you lose out on cards such as Day at the Faire, which is pretty core.

  • Custom Class - Aisha, the Alraune (WIP)

The Boomsday Project is complete for now. That was a pain.

On to Saviors of Ulduum...a set I have a good amount of art for. Yay! Edit: And now that's done too :D

  • Got back into expeditions and found myself in a cheese factory

I too have been playing a lot more expeditions lately (although for me its to progress the prismatic quests), and I would say overall my experience is much more positive than yours. While I have unexpected lost games due to my opponent having more luck than I will play around in a limited format (e.g., Fiora + 2 barriers in the first 5 rounds, The Ruination, etc), on average I'd say most games come down to both players making the best with what they have and very limited "cheese".

  • A Wild Hearthstone Weekend Featuring Aggro Highlander Even Hunter, Corrupt Highlander Warlock, and More!

Something's funky with this one's data since the average turns are shown as 1.5. Despite the amount of ramp Druids have, I still suspect you're not done at that point, at least not with a break-even winrate the deck has.

Perhaps you're just demoralizing your opponents into an immediate surrender? ;-)
