  • 7 Magic the Gathering Cards Banned From Play Due to Racial Depictions

Black is in reference to the color of mana of the creatures (think of them kind of like the classes of Hearthstone). In total there’s 5 colors, red, white, black, blue, and green.

While there are plenty of cards that are specifically “do X to Y color” it being called Cleanse, and destroying all Black minions is just kind of an unfortunate result of how the game was made. They’re just playing it safe I’d assume, given current affairs.

I get why it’s called Cleanse (since the black mana color is usually associated with Demons and Undead), but it can still sound really bad out of context

Its always slightly amusing to me how the entertainment industry is always reacting to world events by washing away all hints of cultural/gender/religious/political themes in their product so everything is as safe as it can be in a vain hope of keeping all sides happy and free from potential boycotts.

I'm a little curious. Does these industry even care enough to ask minorities if they are even slightly offended by depictions, themes, and images of what can only be a sliver of resemblance (if at all) to what they are or practiced?

The entertainment industry is strangely coming close to the disney romance where all minorities are universally adapted into heroic positions while all villains are as absurdly generalized as possible from any racial/religious hints.

Cleanse - Yeah, basically the effect. I wouldn't remove it personally because White and Black as colors are literally the mechanics of the game but I don't really care anyway

I think some people might have found the name "Cleanse" in combination with its effect inappropriate. I don't play Magic the Gathering, but I also assume, that "black" is some sort of a mechanic or a minion-type there and this spell is designed to remove minions of that type from play. The usage of the word "destroy" in that context is imho not really offensive, it sounds like a game term - same as in hearthstone. I believe, that only the title is problematic and, like I've said, it's only because of the context. I would also keep the effect as it is.

Honestly pretty pissed about this given that the EDH committee is also banning these cards. Pretty much all of them were unplayable trash other than Invoke Prejudice, which is the only card in the game with this effect in these colors and considered good, guess you're SoL if you spent 200$+ on this card just to play it for this effect. Wizards will never print this effect on a card ever again in these colors for that cost since it's on the Reserved List.

I do not play MTG, but surmising by WoTC's comments and further context I've been digging around on:

Invoke Prejudice - It's saddled with the ID number '1488' in Gatherer, where the number is now associated with white supremacy dogwhistles, the obvious art being a whole hog reference to the KKK, and then the artist (Harold McNeill) is nowadays apparently a publicly outspoken Neo-Nazi.

Cleanse - Yeah, basically the effect. I wouldn't remove it personally because White and Black as colors are literally the mechanics of the game but I don't really care anyway

Stone Throwing Devils - References the laws of stoning sinners, or nowadays more known culturally as Moslems stoning gay people, which I think is the context and the reason they removed it

Jihad, Crusade - Yeah basically. Plus the fact that they're White is probably why it's removed too.

  • [Game] Card Treasure Hunt (The Resurrection Attempt)

    Pro

That's closer but not yet correct.

  • Captain Blackheart's Treasure is This Week's Tavern Brawl!

For the love of god, add a 15 second turn limit to this game mode

  • 7 Magic the Gathering Cards Banned From Play Due to Racial Depictions

    • Invoke Prejudice-  KKK reference
    • Cleanse- I dunno honestly.  The art is tiny, wondering if it's something in there that's racist.  *Update:  Cleaning the Black Scourge was part of the Redemption movement of racist white Southerners and the KKK.
    • Stone-Throwing Devils- Racial Slur
    • Pradesh Gypsies- Racial Slur
    • Jihad- Real life religious term and problematic art
    • Imprison- Depicts a tortured black slave
    • Crusade- Religious war that was largely racial
  • Quest Trading - Play A Friend!

    Battletag: any#2237

Trade only? : yes, you go first

  • 7 Magic the Gathering Cards Banned From Play Due to Racial Depictions

With all respect - I'm not from US and I'm missing a lot of context. Can you please help me to understand, what makes these cards racist? It is not clearly visible for me.

Like, the first one is probably hiding a KKK reference?

But some are more puzzling. Cleanse - Kaja Foglio art is wrong? Or it is wrong that the card destroys black creatures? How about Virtous Ruin - 2B, Destroy all white creatures - it is fine? Btw, how will Wizards handle, that black is the "evil" color swamp people and white is the "righteous" color of pepople from plains?

I completely off on Stone Throwing devils, but again, this may be some US historical reference I do not get.

Jihad, Crusade - real world religion references?

Please, if you think this comment is insensitive (I do not feel it like this, but I'm from country with different cultural problems) let me know and I will delete it.

  • Captain Blackheart's Treasure is This Week's Tavern Brawl!

It is slow and that makes it frustrating if you lose more than like 3. And some games are of course won/lost instantly because someone highrolled. But let us also appreciate that there can be very close and intense games! I like this brawl for that reason, but you have to remind yorself about that one fun game when you play three shit games in a row, hehe.

On that note, I wish they had like a timer on some brawls, so that after, say, 30 minutes of effort you automaticly gain the reward. For a lot of players it will be very hard to win a game, and that is a bit of a bad experience I'm sure.

@KANSAS The six still doesn't work since it properly would be 6, but it is still a fairly easy work around.  If you say 'Each player's maximum board size is 6', you get the 'x' requirement and the card still reads well.  Also, dig the effect.  Feel like the stats could be a bit higher, but the card is good overall.  I personally prefer not to see characters from outside WoW/HS as named cards (art is fine), but I don't think it's a massive penalty.  There are plenty of HS bosses that could provide good art/flavor for this effect.

  • NERF BURN

Yeah, when I was maining a Deep deck, I usually welcomed one of these Champion-less burn decks, even before the nerfs, because I didn't have much problem with them. Heimer/Vi decks have been my bane lately.

  • Fun Decks

I've had a lot of fun playing this one, and it did really well in ranked for me for a while.

Lately, though, I've stalled, having trouble especially against the Heimerdinger/Vi decks. And so help me, I've jumped on the bandwagon just today and tried my first Heimer/Vi deck. Gotta say, it works pretty good....

  • Captain Blackheart's Treasure

Oh my ... Warrior vs Priest ...
It took 27 turns to win that pack.

  • [Game] Card Treasure Hunt (The Resurrection Attempt)

I've been playing the cyclone tempo mage list just for fun for the past few weeks, and it feels amazing when you go off with it. The best part about the list is that there is a lot of room for experimentation with card synergies.

Thanks to the Quest, Licensed Adventurer is a great addition to the cyclone mage archetype in standard since the rotation of Elemental Evocation. Because the list is "cheating out" so many spells with Sorcerer's Apprentice, Questing Adventurer is a card really worth trying out in the list in my opinion. Removing the "summoning" synergies (with Khadgar and Sea Giant) opens up the potential for more low-cost spell synergies that help out Chenvaala, Mana Cyclone, and Questing Adventurer should you add it. The list can even experiment with dragon synergies thanks to cards like Cobalt Spellkin and Arcane Breath.

I definitely recommend trying out the new Quest version of cyclone mage to anyone who liked the old version.

So I guess drawing six cards doesn't count, so on to idea number 3!

Demonxz, you seem like the guy to ask about things like this, is it okay for me to say 'six' instead of '6' on this card? We have only seen an effect similar to this on one other card, Valdris Felgorge, so should I follow that card exactly and use the number 6? Or is it okay for me to bend the rules and put the word six?

Also, if people don't like me using the same name and art as the MTG card I can always find something else. I am mainly looking for feedback on the ability.

I feel like in this case, it would indeed use the number "6". Typically the only time we see a number in its written word form is when it's followed by another number (Chef Nomi or Swarm of Locusts for example, and there are several others).

  • Fun Decks

I really only play this one deck:

I enjoy Frostbiting people, stunlocking their board while I clear it via spells or Challenger units. You can win games that you frankly shouldn't, stalling for time until your board is big enough and a leveled-up Ashe locks everyone down.

I'm on the verge of crafting Miss Fortune, to pair with my Sejuani. I'm also waiting for August so I can play with my beloved Leona.

  • Fun Decks

So I am curious, why are your funnest decks to play? I think mine is my Teemo/Sejuani deck. I had discovered that puff caps are an awesome way to trigger Sejuani’s level up, so now I have a deck that focuses on puffcap placement and defending until I can bring full-power Sejuani into play. It’s super fun, but not very good in the ranked game mode.

  • Mobalytics Deck Tracker

Question I have about the tracker. Does it show what cards were taken or obliterated from your deck? Like with Deep deck or Pilfer? Because that would be cheating/hacking.

What I mean is say your deck was obliterated by a deep deck. You just look at the tracker and see what cards you have left to know what cards were destroyed. Infermation only someome with the tracker would know. Or with pilfer. Just look at the cards you have used so far, see which ones are missing, and bam you know know which ones they took. Again cheating.

  • I Miss My X - Card Design Competition Discussion Thread

Not sure I understand the flavor though. Would a smaller target be more likely to have her whip rebound and hit her?

i'm kind of afraid of gettting banned or something for explaning the flavour in detail . I'll try to make it more clear in the description, but let's just say this for now: The more you abuse, the harder the payback comes.

  • Completely Broken Cards

Just saw a video on this where three top 500 master players discussed LoR and other card games like it in general and they said in order to have a healthy card game like this you have to balance around constructed play not draft. But with that being said US is bs even in constructed and should be down right banned in draft.

  • Rank popularly stats. Where are they?

I'd like to know where most players are at and where I stand. As of right now I'm dancing between plat 3 and 2.
