This is the article I've been waiting for, and your summary is very much in-line with how I read it. I played Magic 20 years ago, and was excited to try out MTG: Arena. Then I got mana-screwed. Over and over and over again. Even if you don't get completely screwed, if your opponent curves perfectly, and has a 1-2 land advantage through the mid-game, there's nearly nothing you can do. Same with drawing dead lands in the late game. It flooded me with unpleasant memories of playing the game 20 years prior. It's still the Ur-CCG, but I'll take the RNG of Hearthstone over the Magic mana-system 100% of the time.
I also remember being an expert (among my friends) of the spell stack and order of operations in Magic. Making that smooth was one of the most impressive things about MTG: Arena. Waiting on the phases was certainly no worse than the Hearthstone players that take 60 seconds to play a single vanilla minion on turn four.
The genius of this game seems to be streamlining and rethinking the spell stack and really the entire turn structure. Having both players getting to play slow spells regardless of who has attack initiative is brilliant. Also, while I'm a little rusty on Magic, the Burst vs. Fast explanation makes more sense to me than the Instant vs. Interrupt. Fast spells certainly have more restrictions on when you can play them than Instants which makes for less phases overall. Add in the restricted unused mana pool, and the best of Magic & Hearthstone's keywords, and I'm legit pumped.
I think a lot of people are tired of the RNG in Hearthstone, which has increased significantly in the last years. LOR certainly appeals to me. Even in the 5 day BETA I had more fun than in the last 5 months of Hearthstone. Especially the dumb move of wild cards in standard with everyone playing even more shaman, was too much for me after 5 years of HS.
I would love to fight these Evolve Shamans and Secret Pallies over Quest Druid any day of the week. But sadly, they keep popping up in my queue for some reason. Unpopular opinion, but the deck is as degenerate as they come.
Infinite Quest Druid or Maly Quest Druid?
Kun the Forgotten King it's really unhealthy for the meta when you can copy it, infinitely...
But both of them suffer heavy early game disadvantage against aggro, but both of them can highroll lategame.
I've been playing Infinite just for the sake of fun, you either die really early or you just make your opponent concede.
I suppose it is nice to see it from the other side of the coin. Personally, I have had very bad experiences with Quest Druids.
When playing aggro decks, they always complete their quest by turn 5, then I proceed to get outvalued by Oasis Surgers and Starfall into Anubisath Defender. All my damage also gets healed by Hidden Oasis into a massive taunt, and unless I can get a Siamat with Windfury going, it is almost always a complete loss.
Same with control decks, the hordes of Oasis Surgers and things like Cenarius are just way too efficient at contesting the board for me to make any headway into their 30+ armour points. By the time I can get on board, I just get mowed down by Malygos or they fill the board with Kuns and gain 60+ armour in one turn.
It feels kind of like nothing I do against the deck works. Even when playing combo, they can get their combo out faster and safer than any other combo decks, then out-armour the combo decks. They just destroy Control decks with their massive value and potential infinite value/burst from hand. Aggro seems to be the only option here. I have not had much success as they can even clear me when I am high-rolling and somehow defeat a fully evolved board with an 8 drop thrown in through some weird combination of Surgers, Taunts and Starfall.
It was very demoralizing to play against Quest Druid most of the time, and I understand they may not be a problem in the meta at the moment, but it feels good to vent my frustrations against this particular deck.
I get what you mean, and totally agree, but still, aggro is the real winner against it, and maaaaaaaaaaaaybe Big decks like Quest Paladin with late game package.
I faced two Carpet Warlocks today, and I got a really bad mulligan, one destroyed me by turn 6 and the other by turn 4, both games I went first, which is a real bummer as QD, (getting that Quest-Coin is really important), by the time I drew Swipe/Starfall, I was too low/behind to really do anything and my quest wasn't finished. The turn 3 8/8 in warlock is insane for a tempo play against a controlish deck like QD.
And also faced a Big Pally which, once the quest was done, it obliterated me into oblivion... Like "Mmmph... If I Starfall, I got to deal with 2 7/7, if I don't, sonner or latter I'm gonna face an entire board of 2/2 deathrattle... 7/7... The sob even got to play and maintain a Colossus of the Moon...
In the end... The deck is really strong against most archetypes and can snowball hard af in the late game (turns 15+) but if you think about it, it sacrifices too much of early tempo, (even more if not on the coin) and with bad card draw, it doesn't stand a chance against a zooish board.
I got into the early access over the past week, and since blizzards actions recently i think i am going to be switching games to runeterra, that game is imo a nearly perfect card game with all gameplay mechanics, i can't remember having this much fun playing a card game since when i first started hearthstone back in early beta
It hasn't even been a day since the preview patch ended and I already can't wait to play in the next one. I like Hearthstone a lot and I've put too much time and money into it to just quit, but if Riot does things right with LoR there is a very real chance that I will end up playing it more than Hearthstone. It also helps that I've been playing LoL since season 2 and I know every single champion and a decent amount of lore, so seeing that come to life in a card game has been great.
I also want to mention that I absolutely LOVE the animations in LoR, especially the champion level ups. Even when I'm losing I can't help but gaze in awe at Garen spinning his giant sword right in my face.
I'm sure these are all compelling reasons to switch over for someone who looks at Hearthstone as only a card game, but this game doesn't hold a candle to the depth I feel in the roots of Heathstone through its story and art. Hearthstone is built on lore that's over 20 years in the making and is featured in games where you get to interact and develop an almost personal connection with the main characters. LoR is based off the lore of a MOBA where any sense of depth or story is irreverent to the actual game. For me, this is akin to selling off an old family antique that you have history with in order to replace it with the new flashy model that a door-to-door salesmen offered you. If you don't see Hearthstone that way, no problem. I'm not judging, although I do think you are missing out. I just want to offer an alternative perspective.
Although I am agreeing some points I need to say that I disagree with the decision part.
You really don't need to decide to play Hearthstone or Runeterra. You can play both of them in my opinion.
Also i need to attach that Hearthstone decided to split the lore of Warcraft long ago which negates your dissertation. What was the E.V.I.L. for example or MSoG or Karazhan or Booms Lab etc. ? Where are real lore related content in Hearthstone ?
I always wanted to see some characters and lore expansions/adventures in Hearthstone but they never did that. They always tried to bring some new lore to the hearthstone.
So it is a fraud in my opinion. They are selling the game as "Heroes of Warcraft" but they are not really bring lore related stuff to the game. Sorry but the "Old Family Antique" never happened in Hearthstone. Blizzard always sold and replaced the "New Flashy Model" in the name of "Old Family Antique" to the players. That what really happens in Hearthstone. Players always thought that they are buying Antiques but never got that.
I am a fan of Blizzard since I played Warcraft 1 and Diablo 1. I played all of the games of them except The Lost Vikings. I am still playing Overwatch, Hots, Hearthstone and Diablo 3. Really love to read Warcraft lore from time to time but we need to qualify the things truly.
As we can see, Noone is playing the Hearthstone because of the Warcraft lore. They are playing the game because it is popular. If it loses its popularity, noone plays it. Because nowadays people doing everything because of its popularity. They can stop doing anything if they think it is not popular anymore. That's the thing.
I have the beta and tried Runeterra. I really liked it because I always want to play a MTG/Hearthstone Hybrid card game. I always thought "I wish there is a game which is MTG/Hearthstone hybrid" and Runeterra is the game what I wished for. Mana, Minion damage and Minion limit system of Hearthstone with Reaction, Combat system of MTG.
I will keep playing Hearthstone also I will never stop playing it. Although I have spent so less money to it, I have almost all cards and I can enjoy it but I will play Runeterra too. It seems it will be f2p friendly. I will decide after the game officially published. If I sense that I can't play it without real money I can decide not to play it but for now, I'm planning to play both games.
I say that because the critical reception of the game has been better so far, and a part of it is also because the game doesn't have a buying price so it's instantly more accessible to everyone (with a key anyway).
Artifact did have a fair bit of hype to it, but I think everyone who played Artifact (which, I admittedly did not) saw through all of the problems within the first week (in less than 2 months, it lost 95% of its players). That hasn't happened to me. I do see some things that could be improved, but it doesn't have all of the problems Artifact was plagued with upon first stage release.
I think that means "the event" is ending on October 30th, including dual-class arena and special tavern brawls. The cards, however, are staying until the next major update, presumably the next expansion.
"IMPORTANT NOTE: While these cards were re-introduced during the Doom in the Tomb event, they will remain in Standard past the event's conclusion, until the launch of our next major update. More details will be shared, including exact end dates and times, in the coming weeks."
Quote from the site you linked under Standard Shake-Up in Patch Notes.
That said, this is already doing much better than Artifact could've done....
Honest question - how are you making that determination? Since 1) the game is still in beta, and 2) from what I (admittedly very) vaguely recall for Artifact there was a fair amount of hype around it just based on it being Valve and the game itself had a good number of players for the first few weeks until everyone abandoned it.
I haven't played the game so correct me if I'm wrong but the way attacking works is one player says 'i'm attacking you with minions A and B' then the defender says 'I am blocking minion A with X, and minion B with Y'.
This is the same way it works in Magic, you cannot attack with a 2/2 as long as your opponent has a 2/3. it is a lot easier to protect yourself when the attacker doesn't choose the blockers.
Again, I haven't played the game yet, so I won't pretend to be an expert, but from what I know of MTG (which to me seems like the best game to compare it to) 20 health should be good as long as the game designers don't mess it up.
You got it right, but at the same time I think aggro might be a little too overwhelming at times and I feel like the games I played ended up too quickly, it might be that some people played the starter decks though (Which are terrible as far as I played them) so I might be biased vs the wrong opponents.. we will see once there is ranked in the game and we can actually know how well players do.. (cause some players might be new to card games and such..)
I don't think that the starter decks are that bad. So much player did not know how to play well with Fast and Burst spells for example so they misplayed so much against me with starter decks.
I have tested starter decks like playing 10 games with them. I got two 7/3 and 6/4 with them which is not bad in my opinion.
Players will be better in time tho. I might be biased too because of that.
Attacking has an order. First turn, First player can attack, Second turn, Second player can and Third, First player can ....
Ready your attack means you can attack while you are in Defending turn. If your opponent plays a card before attacking in his/her attacking turn, you can attack before him/her or If he/she attacks in his/her attacking turn, you can attack after his/her attack before he/she ended the turn.
Ready your attack means that you can attack twice in a turn. Turns are not same with Hearthstone. One turn includes 2 turns. It includes one player's attacking turn and other player's defending turn.
Reluctance to make an investment into a new card game is understandable, as none of us are still quite sure how it will play out until it does.
That said, this is already doing much better than Artifact could've done, and given that it's F2P and easy for people less familiar to watch, it's going to be gaining a larger fanbase than Artifact ever did in a much better time than they ever could've.
I'm excited to see how much this game takes off, and I want this game to succeed because I enjoyed playing it. The only thing we can do at this point however is wait and see.
