I have not played HS for months but now I'm back. I'm getting some "Standard packs" as rewards and I'm waiting to open them after the expansion launches, already in the new Hearthstone year, so I don't get cards that are about to rotate out. Does that make sense, or are the cards in those packs already determined?

I'm making this thread a liiiiiittle early because I want to help people take advantage of what may well be a time-limited opportunity: completing the Rogue and Priest questline-related achievements without owning the required cards. The only alternate way to complete these achievements is to steal the questline rewards from an opposing player, and the Day 1 meta presents a great opportunity for this, as people will be playing unoptimized meme decks and trying out their fancy new cards. It could happen that these questline decks are unviable and almost impossible to find on ladder afterwards, and this is pretty hard to pull off. There are other questline-related achievements, but these two are the only ones that require a one-time event and are therefore viable for these purposes. So how is this done?
Instant Gratification: Draw the Purified Shard the same turn you shuffle it into your deck.
The simplest way to do this is by waiting until they play the questline reward, then on your turn playing Mindrender Illucia + Lorekeeper Polkelt + Prize Vendor or any 'draw a card' effect like a Loot Hoarder or Bloodmage Thalnos deathrattle. Note that tutor effects of any kind ignore deck order, although they do not change Polkelt's ordering of the deck. This will of course only work if your opponent doesn't draw the shard the same turn they play their questline reward. Example deck: AAECAa0GBPvRA/bWA6iKBJegBA3LzQP73wOS5AOhoASY6gP44wPBnwSFnwS24QPXzgOZ6wPo7wPWoAQA
Okay, but what if I don't own Mindrender Illucia? I don't have her either, unfortunately. It's still possible, although it gets a lot messier, with Rogue. The main thrust of the combo will always be Faceless Manipulator + Shadowstep + play questline reward for 3 mana. From there, you need to have played Potion of Illusion on either a Lorekeeper Polkelt or a Primordial Protector so that you can play it for 1 mana here. The nice thing is that both of these cards help you draw the Potion of Illusion from your deck. If you went the Polkelt route, you also need a draw effect that same turn, which can be set up in advance by Silverleaf Poison but can be included in that same turn via discount or coin generation effects with Prize Vendor. Also, if you're lucky, you can steal the reward through Plagiarize. Example deck: AAECAYO6AgTl0QP21gOoigTl0QMN5dMDkuQDmOoDqesDq+sD3uwD9p8E958EoaAErKAE6/YDtuEDitADAA==
Expecting an Exploding Pen?: Play every Spy Gizmo in one game.
This is also done with Rogue. The good thing is you don't need to force the shard draw like in the Priest achievement, but you do need to play 5 1-mana cards, and ideally speaking you want to do this the very same turn you steal the reward, to ensure consistency. The same Faceless Manipulator + Shadowstep + play questline reward for 3 mana base combo remains, however to play all 5 Spy Gizmos you need 13 mana in one turn. Options include: Backstabing an Efficient Octo-bot, aka the dream scenario. Generating enough coins through Loan Shark and Tomb Pillager. Discounting the spell-based Spy Gizmos with Preparation. Having the reward through Plagiarize so you don't need extra mana in the first place. Generally speaking, some combination of these options should get you through. You should note though, that you need the hand space when you play the questline reward. And also that the opponent is likely to play the stealth-giving Spy Gizmo on their questline reward the turn they play it, so you should plan to weather that 9/7. I'm not very good at deck building. But I have an idea for a deck and I need you help. I want to use the new buffed mage cards (Parrot, Dawngrasp, Wildfire), but it should not be a Big Spell Mage. Of course we need at least some good spells >5 mana for the Parrot. I like Mask of C'Thun and [Hearthstone Card (Arcance Overflow) Not Found], because it's sure they hit enemies. I'm thinking about Deep Freeze and Rune of the Archmage, too But I don't want to add other big spell stuff like Balinda, Clumsy Courier or Tower. So tboth of them might be too expensive. At least Deep Freeze is a Frost spell, which is good for Dawngrasp.
The second idea is to narrow the spells that Dawngrasp will cast, e.g. he/she/it should always play Wildfire as the only Fire spell. So I would probably only add max only one other Fire spell, maybe Fireball to close out games. By this I expect the hero power of Dawngrasp to be at least 4 damage from the beginning.
So the synergies I want to build around are Hero Power + multiple Spellschools + >=5mana spells that target enemies. The Parrot should cast Mask, or Overflow (or Deep Freeze). Dawngrasp should cast Wildfire, Mask, Overflow (and/or Deep Freeze).
This is the current skeleton I created containing the core cards of my idea.
There are obviously some HP synergy cards missing (Manafeeder, Tour Guide, Fallen Hero, Coldarra) and the Frost spell(s) (Deep Freeze and/or Ice Barrier?) that I'm unsure about how much and which to take. I thought about Starscryer, too. Can you help me to put some flesh onto the bones?

One of the most wanted modes in the game that Blizzard could easily make but they make duels and mercenaries instead.
3. Customized Settings in custom games/Sandbox Mode/Training Mode
This would be super fun with friends to mess around and make your own gamemodes with friends. Increasing deck sizes, turning off fatigue, changing the cost of cards, starting mana.
Also it would be if there was a mode where you had access to all cards to test them out. They could make this against ai only. A training mode.
4. Lower Prices
Buying a Mega bundle + Miniset every expansion cost over 315 dollars a year. This insane and I've spent probably close to 1000 dollars on this game because of that and my addiction to this game. It's not fair for Blizzard to disrespect their player base with these absurd prices. Many kids/teens play this game so you would think they would be a bit nicer about that.
Cutting this cost down to $200 a year would be great and that's being nice.
5. Give arena more attention
Arena could be one of the best modes in the game if they just touched it up.

I guess the title should be suggestive enough to sum up the problem I am facing right now. Are there any fun decks to play? The meta so far is basically hearthstone, you either get swarmed by aggro or killed by some stupid combo. Control decks in both games are close to non-existent. I am a huge control/attrition fan when it comes down to card games, but I can't seem to find a single consistent control or to say controlISH deck so far. Darkness feels a lot more like a combo deck rather than control. Also, I feel like the game is lacking a big cards with big reward. I guess there are cards like FTR but this is not a big reward card for 12 mana also, you are either ahead and you slam it down to win, or you cheat it out so you get ahead but if you are behind it simply doesn't matter at all. One of the few fun concepts for me is Purrrfection but, the kitty is just meh when it comes down to finishing games with it, due to stuns and removal. Now, you might say well if there are stuns are removal there should be control decks working right? Not at all. Its good when your opponent is relying on one big ass minion. Karma is prolly one of the few fun cards to play but she is just too slow. So ya, if you can recommend a value/attrition/control deck I'd be happy to give it a try. Maan , I miss highlanders days. Don't get me wrong, the game is good. Its just my own frustration.

And I've been thinking, since I write down every pack I've opened down to the rarity details, I'm pretty sure it was my 40th. But okay, maybe there's some packs I've miscounted and hope that this week's bonus pack there'll be some answer.
2nd Spoiler: It still doesn't have any legendary card in it, (the fact that this is my 10th 40 dust pack, without any epics, double rares or golden). Thus, this week makes my 41st of legendary less pack.
And so, I'm starting to google if there's anyone having the same problem, and found this on reddit. Not only that, some people doesn't get any legendary in their first 10 pack.

Today I did a heroic Balinda run to finally unlock her. First thing: my Brightwing had a Equilibrium treasure that gave +2 to Nature and Fire. But BWs skill did get no buff! It still did 9 instead of 11. I can provide a screenshot of this but this is on my mobile and I have to reactivate my imgur account. Chi-Ji on the other hand also haf an Equilibrium (the one with heal power) but it didn't affect any skill, too (no screenshot).
Second: during the run I got Samuro task 18. 450 damage to heroic bosses. After the Balinda fight it was at 355/450. No screenshot of this because I did not thought it would be relevant. But trust me I chose Barrens-1 deliberately because there is a 40 and a 60 health boss. I double checked wether its over 350. And because I am making more damage than the health total (like 10 hp left, 20 critical dmg) I am on the safe side. Right? No, I ended up with 441/450? Can anyone explain this? With the reveal of Pirate Admiral Hooktusk being one of the most flavourful cards I can think of, I thought it would be nice to step back from card power, tilt-factors and meta-relevance to focus on an aspect of the game everyone agrees is great: theme and flavour. Since Hooktusk was probably my favourite character in all of HS already (and because I have 2 weeks off work and a ton of time to kill) it felt fitting to do a deep dive on the character and appreciate all the little details the HS team put in.
All are welcome to point out what I missed, or show their own appreciation for their own HS character... in far fewer words I expect.
The HS-original pirates are an eccentric bunch. Skycap'n Kragg comes in flying a giant parrot, wielding a lance with a hook on the end, and cramming a few extra 'r's in the charge keyword (kicking off a trend that continues in pirate cards to this day). Then Patches the Pirate gets fired as a cannon ball onto the field, wearing more eye patches than most organisms have eyes, and originally having another eye pun in his attack voiceline. Both are perfect examples of HS whimsy done right. Indeed, Kragg's appearance in the TGT trailer was practically the original statement that HS no longer follows WoW lore closely. (The irony of course being that he was later made canon in WoW.)
Captain Hooktusk's eccentricities are a bit more subtle, and aren't defining features so much as clues to her personality. Between her portable cannon, her ridiculous belt anchor beneath a shark emblem, her obnoxiously elaborate and bright pink hair, and of course, the hooks on her tusks, we immediately know she's not interested in hiding in the shadows like most rogue characters. She's here to be noticed, with enough flair to overshadow her contemporaries in RR - which is impressive given the set's whole theme was showmanship.
She's also flexing pretty hard that she can carry a cast iron cannon with one hand while the other juggles a cannonball like its nothing. Coupled with that grin, it's a really disconcerting mix of playful and threatening. Finally, she's happy with a low cut shirt revealing cleavage. Unlike Jaina, I get the feeling Hooktusk would actually seek to exploit that feature, and if you told her to cover up she's gladly fire that cannon at you.
Luckily, RR gave us a couple of images of Hooktusk in action too. She's swinging around in Cannon Barrage and rappelling with her crew in Raiding Party. Again, there's no stealth here. It's all show and would be a joy to watch… so long as she isn't coming for you.
When we factor in her various voicelines, she goes from an awesome deign to an instantly lovable character. Consider her entrance voiceline: “Cheatin’?! I never fight fair!” This is not some generic “For the Horde”-esque entrance. No. She’s clearly just been accused of cheating and says the “Cheatin’?!” as though insulted. Not because it isn’t true - she immediately admits she always cheats - but because she’s amazed they even needed to point it out.
Add in her Rumble Run voicelines, and we develop her cheating ways further: as the fight starts she says “I’ll fight fair. Dis time. Promise.”… She doesn't. Obviously. Her responses to her shrine dying add to her little mind games. While everyone else gets cross or worries how to proceed, she says things like "Ya think that's a good idea?", making poor Rikkar (the player's character) question whether he made a terrible mistake. Other times she'll just pass it off with "Eh. It was just a distraction anyways." Whether she actually thinks that or not is entirely unclear to us, and there's nothing more dangerous than an enemy you don't understand.
A personal favourite is when you threaten her, and she replies with "Bwa-haha. Oh… you were serious?" She's just having fun mocking you. But she knows to be serious when she needs to be. Emote her in Tamsin's chapter of the Book of Mercs and she'll reply with "Loose lips sink ships." Which demonstrates her playful demeanor is a facade hiding a mind that knows exactly what she's doing. Kind of like a more playful Jack Sparrow, which is high praise.
To top it off, her voice actress does a stellar job. Writing quotes down is one thing, but you really need to listen to them to truly appreciate them.
New card, new promotion, and new look. Kind of. Pirate Admiral Hooktusk looks mostly the same with significantly bulkier arms. Presumably since she's been swimming a lot more lately. Admittedly the extra bulk made it more plausible she was going to be a warrior card, which would have sucked for me personally. I'm glad that didn't happen.
There are more subtle changes that are probably more important: her ponytail now ends with a shark tail like shape; and when she's underwater (see the Sunken City trailer and the minion art, but not art for the Plunder options) she has light blue stripes (likely representing gills) on her arms and a dorsal fin like shape behind her head. I suspect these are visual representations of Gral's power letting her swim fast and breathe underwater. If so, that's a pretty cool bit of character progression.
Her eyes might also have white goggle-like barriers over them underwater. That's what it looks like in the trailer, but I haven't seen a high enough resolution image of the card to tell there.
Her first card, Captain Hooktusk, won me a lot of games (yes, despite it being an 8-mana card in an aggessive deck), and I get the flavour: her opponent thinks she's alone for a fair fight, only to get jumped by her crew. So she's cheating thematically, but mechanically… not so much. She turned up at a time recruit was still in Standard, so it felt well within the rules of the game, and hence took me a while to work out what the flavour was.
The new Pirate Admiral Hooktusk is much clearer on the matter. Two of her options were utterly ruled out in the early days of HS, and even if a couple of similar effects have existed since, it is absolutely going to feel like cheating when it is done to you. But it's flavourful cheating. She's always stealing something. She's boarded your ship, tied up the crew, and is making off with the goods. Furthermore, they actually call back to her Treasure from Below shrine in Rumble Run, which is just so fitting here.
The art depicts this story beautifully, using the option 'cards' to go beyond the power pose of the base minion and show what happened after she burst into Faelin's ship. It didn't go well for him, Finley or Ini (I think that's the name of the female mecha gnome). Poor Ini is faced with Hooktusk pointing the cannon at her and juggling a cannonball, calling back the the original RR card and showing she actually does that outside of a photo shoot.
I don't think any other card has been able to tell the story surrounding the base artwork so well, especially not in so self-contained a way. I hope they find ways to do this sort of thing again in future. There must be so many little stories to tell this way that we'd never know if we only get single snapshots.
Now we're here, it is clear Hooktusk was added to Tamsin's Book of Mercs chapter to softly re-introduce the character before she made a bigger appearance in Sunken City. However you feel about the Book of Mercs, it's neat to retroactively see the thought that went into them.
Now I've done this for Hooktusk, I feel kinda guilty for not paying more attention to a lot of cards. I'm sure there's a lot to find in them!
