So they have to balance it to achieve both aims. If this is a one off 2800 gold expenditure we were warned about ahead of time (which we were) that's ok. If it's 3 expacs + 8400 gold for 3 adventures every year all but the most hardcore f2p players (infinite arena etc) will struggle to stay engaged.
Sure some will spend money, but most I think would leave over time. That's bad not only because I'd fall into the latter group, but the player base will reduce and new players will be rare. Queue times increasing and may put the future of the game in doubt eventually.
Choas gazer - Interesting. How does this work in actuality? If this comes out at turn 4 and affects a 10 mana cost card, is this just a cheese? or is there some mechanism that ensures that it only affects cards that are playable by the opponent the next turn.
It specifically says affects only playable cards so wouldn't corrupt a 10 mana card at turn 4.
I'm less sure if it would affect a 5 mana card if opponent at 4 mana when you play it but they will have 5 mana when their turn starts. I assume no? Technically none of their cards are playable when you play this as it's your turn :)
New cards, and I assume significant impact on meta. Really helps the 4 months between expacs be much less stale.
Though that said it does meaning crafting gets even harder as the usual wait for a few weeks and then craft advice is harder to get right :)
And if this occurs every mid expac the game pretty much got 8400 gold a year more expensive, as this content is much less skippable than the last few. That's a pretty big deal for many people. At least we were warned in advance though before spending all gold on DoD. Will see if this is the pattern or once a year etc.
Yeah dark theme is so nice. By all means implement a light theme for people that want it for some reason (TFT panel testing maybe? :P) but keep dark as an option which I'm sure it will be or unicorn revolt (which sounds bad).
What I really like about Flux's post is just how excited and up for it he is.
I don't play other card games besides HS, but just the sheer amount of work and dedication put into the site by all concerned already is definitely praise worthy - so kudos on that front. Now you people go and walk about today feeling special basking under that all praise I just bestowed :P
I will do the same because I got to use the word bestowed (small things make my day sometimes).
Might not have phrased that well - I mean ladder/MMR is the Hearthstone implementation of what he was saying, but of course could be implemented differently in other games.
I think any matchup bias at work could be determined across millions of games clearly, and of course such stats are available to some outside of Team 5/Blizzard so would be risky to do. I also think there's not a good reason for them to do it, especially if it could be discovered and revealed.
In my view people just suck (me included) at spotting statistically significant patterns of this type especially since HS is often an emotive gaming experience.
Yeah I do think he means the ladder system as a whole here so legend #1 doesn't play a rank 50 guy/gal.
I've never read they try to fiddle with a same rank matchup to ensure you get a 50% winrate. I've been able to get 85-90% winrate over 15 or so games sometimes at lower ranks.
Again, they've stated the exact opposite which I believe in the absence of proof to the contrary. The ladder system and meta environment as a whole acts to somewhat balance the matchups/winrates.
I do understand though sometimes it doesn't *feel* that way :)
It has been stated so far more than once by Hearthstone developers that there is a algorithm built in matchmaker that tries to keep all players around 50% win rate.
Do you have a source for that? In my post earlier in the thread they've been clear there isn't.
Any 50% winrate goal would be based on the idea you rank/MMR tried to pit you against players of your skill level (or deck power level at least) over time. Perhaps that is what was referred to.
The legendary cards distribution is fine what is not fine is the epic card distribution.. Epics are too rare for how many you need.. There are too many bad epics for them to be as rare as they are now..
Or you know make common cards yield more dust just a small increase from 5 to 10 will go a long way...
I have often thought the same thing especially when you see the purple glow and are disappointed by the crappy card you get.
Only thing is though, if epics are always great then they kind of become must have which actually makes the game more expensive.
Yay dusting time for all the extra copies!
They need to make money.
They need to keep the game f2p viable.
So they have to balance it to achieve both aims. If this is a one off 2800 gold expenditure we were warned about ahead of time (which we were) that's ok. Surely asking for personal fluffers is against some kind of site rule! :P
Wow looks so good :)

All in all can't wait to see the new cards!!!

Wow to see a visual representation of Shaman go over 30% due to evolve and it's effect on the played rates of the other classes.
Hope Team 5 have a similar graphic nice and large in the balance team office - if not they should have!
Thanks for posting this HSreplay graphic flux - was really interesting the see the rises/falls on the year.
I've not played much standard and don't know the answer.
But +1 for a constructive polite non salty post asking for guidance.
Happy New Year all!
Merry Christmas (or whatever is the nearest thing for you) to everyone!!!
I hereby invite you to join the "Nerf Ramming Speed now!" action group. We have members all over the world and have many high profile (grim) patrons.
I am currently engaged in commissioning Ben Brode to write and perform a "Nerf Ramming Speed now!" rap video set in a balloon factory.
As a totally unbiased person who definitely isn't motivated by self interest I heartily agree with your Ramming Speed nerf demand.
*checks collection* I am less concerned with Chromatic Egg though :)
I even wrote to my friend, Pack Opening Algorithm, before opening my packs! I think he was pretty busy though to be fair.

Mate we need a drink in the tavern sometime. Maybe found a Ramming Speed Nerf Now! action group :P
Great that these nerfs have been announced.
But what about the big offender? We all know what card I am referring to. Yes that's right, Ramming Speed!
Totally busted and should be nerfed right now.
The fact i opened 5 of these (1 golden) is in no way a factor in how I feel.*
*this is a lie
