Spirits of Competition - Card Design Competition Discussion Thread

Competition Theme: Spirits of Competition

We've got a special competition to celebrate Oozefest 2. You can choose any (or multiple) of these three prompts for your card to follow.

  • Run Away!
    • Design a card that returns a minion to its owner's hand or deck.
  • Over My Dead Body
    • Design a card that interacts with Deathrattles.
      • While your card (if it's a minion or weapon) does not need to have a Deathrattle, just merely being a Deathrattle will not count. We want something more directly synergistic.
  • Trick or Treat?
    • Design a card that gives your opponent something harmful.

Does anyone have what it takes to pull off the ultimate trick and meet all three prompts?

Oozefest! As part of our Hallowe'en celebrations, we bring you a new spooky competition to celebrate the season.

We have some special prizing available for this one-off event. All rewards will be given out after the competition concludes.

  • Participating without disqualification rewards you with 10 Gold and 10 Candy.
  • Finalists earn 25 Gold and 25 Candy.
  • Winner receives 100 Gold and 100 Candy.

  • Finalist Phase: Starts on Sat, Oct 30 12:00 EDT (GMT -0400). Runs until Sun, Oct 31 12:00 EDT (GMT -0400)
  • Winner Selected: After finalist voting concludes and we validate votes.

  • Happy Oozefest everybody! I'm not completely convinced of the art pieces yet, but here's my idea. What do you think?

     

    Bit of a throwback to Stalagg and Feugen with some Pogo-Hopper flavor mixed in. I considered making it a Rogue card, but there's too much potential for other Deathrattle classes like Priest and Hunter to make this a class card. Maybe add Rush so they have more impact the turn they're played?

      Looks like a cool design, but hell no keywords on them. +4/+4 is already plenty and there are many ways to cheat the deathrattle trigger. It might already be pretty strong as is, tho i am too lazy to go and look for the broken combos :P

      One thing you might want to do is say in the submission description, that they would be a part of a promo deal for the xpac, everyone would get them free at launch or something. Spending 3200 dust on this, or opening just one of them would feel horrible :D That fact alone might cost you some votes, possibly.

  • Okay, I went into a deep dive of Shadowlands lore to produce this masterpiece. I should probably adjust stats and the cost of the medallion to make everything more fair. My guiding pieces were Curse of Rafaam, Kael'thas Sunstrider and Spiritsinger Umbra.

  • Well hearthcards is down for me so I'll just type mine up to get the idea up.

    Daisy Pusher Epic 4 Mana 3/3 Battlecry: Activate a minion's deathrattle then return it to its owner's hand.

  • After my huge blunder with regular contest by actually not noticing the typo on one of my Warlock Secrets, I am trying to rehabilitate with this card. It combines theme #1 and #2 whilst adding a unique twist of being a Priest-Rogue dual-class card, as both classes have Deathrattle and return/shuffle synergies.

  • The first one represents a viking (or a Vrykul I guess) that goes to Valhalla after dying in combat, while the second one goes for a more Halloween-like flavor.

    I really like P1NG and P0NG, especially for their names. I think I agree with the person who said you should reduce the buff, though, since they can easily get out of hand and they're 1 mana, so it's very easy to combo them with tons of stuff.

    I like how the trigger and the "curse" have related effects, but the whole thing feels a bit convoluted right now.

    It's pretty interesting that it can be used on your stuff or your on enemy. Would it be Neutral or Rogue?

    I think it's a bit OP right now, considering it's 2 effects in one, but maybe I'm a bit conservative (it's been a while since I haven't played constructed)

    What does Shadow Weakness means? That they take extra damage from Shadow spells or that the Shadow spells they cast make less damage? I'm assuming the former, but even then I think Priest's spells are not usually damaging ones.

  • I can't find art to save my freaking life. I also had the idea of a minion that gives your opponent a candy bar that fully heals them but makes them unable to cast spells anymore, but couldn't find any art.

  • My first idea for this comp. The enemy can't see which card is the bomb. When the trick card is played it changes into TRICKED!!! instead of doing anything, like it got Countered basically.

  • Hey everyone and happy Oozefest!

    Decided to make a deathrattle payoff for druid, evoking the idea that the dead deathrattle minions feed the squashlings and allow them to rise!

    Thoughts about 3 mana vs 4mana cost?

  • I bizarrely can't think of anything for the side-comp at the moment, but let me contribute with some feedback.

    A funny idea, but I'm very worried about its growth rate particularly in the early game. If you play one on turn 1 and then the other on turn 2 (or even just Coin it out), then I struggle to see a world in which you'll struggle to win the game. The only real counter to it is Silence or bouncing it. So it's not impossible to deal with, but it doesn't feel particularly fun to me.

    I like this. It's a little bit difficult to use given that it costs 7 mana and you'd need to play a Deathrattle minion on the same turn to get any good value out of it (and the fact that it only has 4 Health is not helping that), but I do enjoy the core concept.

    It seems good when you use it on an enemy minion and it seems weak when used on one of your own minions. Thus, it ends up feeling less like a Deathrattle-synergy card and more like a tech card against Deathrattle minions (and not a particularly impactful one either).

    A cool idea to add spell type weaknesses to the regular game, but it's not that useful with this particular card. Priest only has 6 Shadow spells that deal damage and 3 of them are exclusive to Wild.

    Glorious Vrykrul is "cute" but it doesn't feel particularly practical to use. This is fine as a weird "pack filler" card, but it ultimately doesn't make the best card for these competitions. Fleshfeasting Crow on the other hand is really good.

    A funny idea in theory, but I feel like the Bomb aspect would be more frustrating than it is fun, and it's also bad to give your opponent an extra copy of a minion.

    This is a really cool card, but it doesn't feel particularly Druid to me, at least as far as mechanics go. Perhaps in the future if we get support for a Deathrattle Druid, then this card would be perfect. The name Squashling is already used so you should think of a new name for the token (though I honestly don't blame you for not remembering the card).
