True mages master all magic!
As a tribute to reaching 1.000 wins with a class, I've decided to craft a fully golden Wild deck of my favorite archetype. This guide covers "True Mage", my choice for Mage. In this case, going for the so called rainbow archetype was an easy one for me. While there are several historically good and somewhat flavorful Mage archetypes like Mech Mage, Secret Mage, Quest Mage and others, none of them encorporates the mastery of all things magic better than Rainbow Mage.
Competitiveness and matchups:
This is not and will never be a meta deck, but it's no meme either. A good player can jam this on ladder without having a completely miserable experience, but you more or less rely on queueing into board based opponents.
- Aggro is the matchup you're looking for. Between Flame Ward, Fire Sale, Star Power and Inquisitive Creation you can clear enemy board almost every turn starting as early as turn 2 with the coin or a lucky Ancient Mysteries. Ice Block saves you for another turn and can be duplicated by Rewind, Sir Finley, Sea Guide helps you fish for answers.
- Control is tricky but doable unless they start chaining Loathebs. No need to be afraid of disruption, we don't rely very much on our minions. Just try to complete your questline as fast as possible and make sure to play Magister Dawngrasp the same turn you add it to your hand or it will get rat-ed.
- Combo is a bad matchup because we don't hard run disruption. You can try to discover stuff like Potion of Polymorph or Explosive Runes, but my advice is to rather put an Ice block up and try to face race them.
Mulligan:
Always keep the following cards in order of priority:
How does this win?
+
Noteable synergies and card combos:
- Ancient Mysteries always pulls Ice Block or Flame Ward, resulting in 2 ticks for your questline
- When you use Discovery of Magic, try to choose spells that work well when they get recast by Magister Dawngrasp (aoe, stuff that specifically targets enemies, etc.)
- You can cast Reverberations on your own Arcsplitters to get more Arcane Bolts
- Try to think ahead when you discover stuff. Potion of Illusion can provide inredible value if you manage to bounce Arcanist Dawngrasp or Sif with it. Seafloor Gateway draws and discounts Inquisitive Creation
Misc and closing thoughts:
Hero portrait: Haven't found one that incorporates all the different spell schools yet, but Dawngrasp as a non-binary character fits the rainbow theme very well.
Card Back: Rainbow!
... and that's a wrap! Let me know what you think about the deck in the comments! Have you truly mastered all magic? What's your favorite Mage archetype and why?
