Totem Shaman is finally good!

Hey everyone! I'm Funki Monki and all I do is create meta-breaking (hopefully) homebrew decks! I've had a ton of fun playing a new deck, Totem Shaman! Although I've only played a few games with it so far (rank 4) I have yet to lose. This new creation utilizes a couple new cards brought back from Wild into Standard, Thing from Below and Evolve. Thing from Below is absolutely insane with Mutate and Evolve if discounted really cheap, just like Mogu Fleshshaper so I wanted to make a deck around that synergy. However, there aren't many great totems in standard but we do have Amalgams so we can use Nightmare Amalgam and Hench-Clan Hag in addition to EVIL Totem and a Flametongue Totem. I hope you all enjoy this deck as much as I have so far :).
Full write-up below. I spent a fair amount of time on this guide to help you learn it, so if this guide is helpful don't forget to upvote to help others see it as well!
GENERAL STRATEGY:
This is an aggressive-style deck so tempo and board control is everything. Because of this, we are usually looking for value trades throughout the game. Our finishers include Bloodlust and The Storm Bringer so obviously we can't use them if we don't have any minions on board. Also, the more minions we have on board the better our Evolve gets and more options for a Mutate. The early game usually consists of our lackey package with EVIL Totem, EVIL Cable Rat, Sludge Slurper and Weaponized Wasp to generate tempo. The earlier you can get these down the better because the lackeys give you more options to play in future turns. Through the mid game we want to setup for our big swing turns such as Mogu Fleshshaper into Mutate, a wide board (hopefully with Desert Hare) into Evolve, or Bloodlust so be careful not to overextend against classes that have board clears like Warrior or Priest. Usually 4-5 minions against those classes is enough pressure. The end game... there is no end game. You've either won or lost by now ;)
MULLIGAN:
Always: Sludge Slurper, EVIL Cable Rat, EVIL Totem, Evolve, Mogu Fleshshaper
Sometimes: Mutate (if you have Desert Hare, Thing from Below or Mogu Fleshshaper), Thing from Below (if you can summon 2 totems by turn 4), Nightmare Amalgam (if you have a turn 2 minion), Splitting Axe (if you have a 2 mana minion, and Nightmare Amalgam), Desert Hare (if you have Evolve or Mutate)
REPLACEMENTS:
The Storm Bringer -> Bloodlust

Cool deck. One suggestion though, the Former Champ seems really awkward sometimes, especially when you don't have Mutate or Evolve in hand, especially when you don't have control over the board. I tried cutting it and the Earth Shock (I didn't run into many decks that warranted a Silence) for two Underbelly Anglers, and I must say it's really helpful if you lose the board. My biggest drawback to playing this deck is that I don't know when to go all in and when not to, so I often play into removals like Plague of Death or Flamestrike, but with double Underbelly Anglers I can easily refill my hand and the board, potentially setting up for a The Storm Bringer or a Bloodlust lethal.
Very valid suggestions! I could definitely see merit to adding in 2 Underbelly Angler. I'd have to test it out and see how that change would perform. One thing though, is that Earth Shock has been very useful to me so far because of all the deathrattles and taunts to be able to push for lethals. Thanks for checking out the deck and for the input! :)
Ah, yes: I was looking forward for something like this since I unpacked my second Splitting Axe
I've played a few games and here's my question: is just one Bloodlust enough?
Finally a good use for those Splitting Axe's :D. I believe that 1 Bloodlust is enough because sometimes we'll win games from a big Evolve or The Storm Bringer. Sometimes a Mogu Fleshshaper into Mutate can also win games against other tempo decks. Feel free to experiment tho and see what works best for you and your playstyle!
This deck looks awesome - defenitely gonna try this because i was looking for a nice shaman deck that would not build around the quest :)
Great! I hope you like it! I was the same way, I saw EVERYONE playing the Quest so I wanted to make something different :)
I agree! Thank you for posting an insightful comment that really highlighted the nuances of the deck and your experiences with it!
Looks great. Can we discuss using the quest here? Obviously you want to be able to summon totems early on, but there are many battlecries that would benefit from doubling. Just a thought.
Thanks! You're absolutely right that there are quite a bit of battlecries, however, unlike the regular Quest Shaman deck we aren't shooting for late game value, we're looking to close out games quickly with our Evolve + wide board, or Bloodlust or The Storm Bringer. This is a very aggressive style deck and playing the quest without Questing Adventurer in this deck hurts a lot by having 1 less card in our opening hand. Great suggestion though!
I've been playing this deck all day so far, I love it. Feels good to play Overpowered BS alongside the less than stellar Totem Package. A+
Great to hear! I'm glad you're loving it :). It does feel good to give an underappreciated synergy (the totems) their chance to shine!
