Welcome to the Legion league mechanic guide! Want to see how far you can go activating ominous purple crystals? In this guide, we'll tackle all aspects of Legion: the in-map mechanic, exclusive loot, the endgame Domain of Timeless Conflict content and we'll end with a few ways to squeeze the most out of your Legion encounters.
Legion is considered Extra Content, meaning it has a baseline non-zero chance of being randomly encountered in maps.
Our league mechanic guides are structured according to "Depth" - the deeper you go into the article, the more complex the mechanics get. If it all becomes too much, take a break from this guide, play with the league mechanic enough to master the fundamentals then come back and delve deeper!
Difficulty: Low-High
Complexity: Very low, for Path of Exile standards.

Depth 1 - The Legion Monolith
In your maps, you may come across a large, dark purple crystal we call the Legion Monolith. Upon activation, two large armies of time-frozen warriors will spawn, and a timer will show up at the top of your screen! Once the timer is up, any monsters you 'killed' will be released from stasis and attack you! Let's get a clearer look at the gameplay loop here:
- You find a Legion Monolith (often referred to as a Timeless Monolith) and click it.
- Two armies of monsters, stuck in stasis, spawn all around the Monolith and a timer appears at the top of your screen.
- You have until the timer runs out to "break" (fully damage) as many monsters out of stasis as you can.
- When the timer expires, you get to fight the monsters you previously released and get their loot. What you're mainly looking for here are Timeless Splinters.
That's really it on the most basic level! Here's a video that shows you exactly that:
Depth 2 - Legion Types & Army Compositions
You'll notice there's always two different armies that spawn around a Legion Monolith, but they're not always the same two armies. Legion content is divided by 5 armies, which are:
- The Eternal Empire (White)
- The Karui (Orange)
- The Vaal (Red)
- The Templar (Green)
- The Maraketh (Yellow)
Whenever you activate a Monolith, you'll get a random combination of two of these armies, and each of them come with their own unique monsters and special currency, which we'll look at in the next section. While the first three (Eternal Empire, Karui, Vaal) are fairly common, Templars are rarer and Maraketh are rarest.
Another thing you'll notice is the variety of monsters the armies are composed of. You have:
- The regular folks, Normal and Magic monsters.
- The Sergeants, Rare monsters.
- The Generals, Unique monsters, found at the edges of their respective armies.
You'll always get the regular folks and a variable amount of Sergeants, but getting Generals to spawn is not guaranteed. Naturally, each monster has a different health pool depending on their rarity, and coupled with the short timer, you'll need to make quick decisions on which monsters you want to prioritize. Ideally, your build would eventually be able to just instantly clear the whole screen, but let's pretend that's not an option!
You'll get more Timeless Splinters from Rare monsters and Generals, of course, but you'll notice there will occasionally be chests and war hoards hiding between the monsters. These usually give out at least one Timeless Splinter, but more importantly, once you break them out of stasis, they'll break nearby monsters out too, so make sure to prioritize them!
Sometimes, you'll also notice some monsters have icons hovering above their heads, which correspond with a loot type. This means the monster, once out of stasis, will drop related loot like, say, a Divination Card or a Labyrinth Offering. Keep an eye out!
Depth 3 - Splinters & The Domain
We've mentioned Timeless Splinters a couple of times, and it's time we talked about them. These come in five different varieties, and when you get 100 of a type, they combine into a Timeless Emblem. Let's first see what they are:
| Timeless Eternal Empire Splinter | Timeless Eternal Emblem |
| Timeless Karui Splinter | Timeless Karui Emblem |
| Timeless Vaal Splinter | Timeless Vaal Emblem |
| Timeless Templar Splinter | Timeless Templar Emblem |
| Timeless Maraketh Splinter | Timeless Maraketh Emblem |
Each army has some unique loot associated with it. If you want a chance at that loot, you'll want to target farm that specific army, so you can then have them appear in the Domain of Timeless Conflict. Note that you can also get Timeless Splinters from other sources, as we'll detail in Depth 6.
The Domain of Timeless Conflict is a special area you access by using two or more Timeless Emblems in the map device. We recommend using four to start with. Here's what happens when you do that:
- Once you use the Timeless Emblems, portals will open to the Domain of Timeless Conflict.
- The Domain is a large, round map with monsters trapped in stasis. The more Emblems you use, the more monsters are spawned.
- In the center of the map lies a giant Legion Monolith. Entering its protective bubble and hanging around for a few seconds will start the event.
- Once activated, you'll see a timer at the top of your screen that signals how long you have left until the event is over.
- At the same time, all monsters that were trapped in stasis will be released!
- You want to prioritize killing the Generals, which you can find at the edges of the arena, and any monsters with loot icons above their heads while you make your way to each General.
- All your loot is saved and hidden, and will explode in the center of the arena, around the Monolith, when your time is up.
- Once you've killed all the Generals and a bunch of monsters, you'll want to go back into the bubble around the Monolith and hang around for a few seconds yet again. This will spawn more monsters!
- You'll notice not all Generals will have respawned. Generally, each subsequent "reset" will let you fight half the total Generals you could kill at the start of the map. Change your route and get ready to alternate between the Generals. Rinse and repeat the Monolith respawning action until you run out of time.
How long a timer you get depends on how many Emblems you put into the map device. A 4-way Domain is generally easily doable by any well-rounded build in the mid-endgame. The best builds for this content are ones that can quickly dispatch monsters, so you'll want to invest in damage and speed. The Generals, this league's bosses, are also not to be trifled with, although they may be easier than other leagues' counterparts! You'll often see the Path of Exile community mention "5ways". This refers to Domains where you use all five Timeless Emblems, and all five armies are present. They are pretty hard, and are done primarily as a good source of XP, in a party. If you see people advertising "5way carry", it means they're boosting other players' levels. Hitting level 100 is not necessary to beat all the content in Path of Exile, so there's no need to undertake the harrowing journey from level 95 upwards, but if you want to do it anyway, 5-ways are a decent way to speed up the process.
Depth 4 - Legion Loot
Legion loot comes in two flavors: Incubators and Timeless Jewels. First, let's tackle Incubators:
- Incubators drop from any Legion content, and a few of the less valuable ones can also drop from other league content as we'll detail in Depth 6.
- Incubators are applied to an equippable item and require you to kill a certain number of monsters with the item equipped. Once you've done that, you'll drop an item on the floor.
Incubators come in many flavors, and you can check them all out in our Incubator Cheat Sheet.
Timeless Jewels exclusively drop from the Domain of Timeless Conflict. There is one Timeless Jewel associated with each army. To have a chance at a specific Timeless Jewel drop, you'll need to run a Domain with its corresponding army, and kill the corresponding General. Repeatedly killing the General inceases the odds of the Timeless Jewel dropping.
| TIMELESS JEWEL | ARMY | GENERAL |
| Elegant Hubris | Eternal Empire | General Marceus Lioneye |
| Lethal Pride | Karui | Queen Hyrri Ngamaku |
| Glorious Vanity | Vaal | Viper Napuatzi |
| Militant Faith | Templar | Cardinal Sanctus Vox |
| Brutal Restraint | Maraketh | Aukuna, the Black Sekhema |
These Timeless Jewels can be socketed into your Passive Tree to transform the passive nodes in their area, sometimes adding extra stats, other times completely changing them into something else. Each Timeless Jewel is basically unique from all the rest, with different numerical seeds in its modifiers resulting in different transformation outcomes in their surrounding areas. Check out our Timeless Jewel Guide and our Timeless Jewel Generator tool to see what their potential options are and which one you would require for your specific needs, respectively.
Sometimes, you may notice a spookier Emblem dropping. Let's check that out.
Depth 5 - Unrelenting Timeless Emblems
The Domain of Timeless Conflict has a chance of dropping special Timeless Emblems. These are:
| Unrelenting Timeless Eternal Emblem |
| Unrelenting Timeless Karui Emblem |
| Unrelenting Timeless Vaal Emblem |
| Unrelenting Timeless Templar Emblem |
| Unrelenting Timeless Maraketh Emblem |
These are hardmode versions of the regular Emblems. Here's what you need to know:
- They occasionally drop from Domains where all five factions are present.
- They offer improved rewards and increased experience at the cost of higher difficulty (check the tooltips in the table above).
- They can be mixed and matched with regular Emblems.
- Each two Unrelenting Emblems used together increase the zone level (and thus, the experience gain as well as the difficulty and loot) by 1, up to level 84.
- At least one Unrelenting Emblem must be used to have a chance for Stasis Prison, a hardmode exclusive Legion Unique, to drop.
Only attempt Unrelenting Domains if you're really sure of yourself or if you're in a party with other strong folks!
Depth 6 - More Legions & Legion Scarabs
Want to release even more monsters from stasis? There's a few ways to go about it:
- Using the Legion map crafting option, which costs 5 Chaos Orbs, will guarantee a Legion Monolith in your map.
- Using a Legion Scarab will do the same! You can use up to 4 of these per map, for a total of 4 Legion Monoliths!
- Allocating certain passive nodes on the Atlas Passive Tree will increase and even guarantee finding Legion Monoliths on every map. Here are all the nodes that directly increase your chance of finding Monoliths: LINK. With all of those allocated, your chance to find Monoliths will be XXX%!
In addition to the Legion Scarab, there's four other higher-rarity Scarabs that increase or modify the rewards you get from Legion encounters in maps. Note that these do not guarantee Legion Monoliths; you'll want to pair them with at least one of the above options to ensure they don't go to waste:
- Legion Scarab of Officers - More Sergeants means more Timeless Splinters!
- Legion Scarab of Command - Guarantee two Generals!
- Legion Scarab of the Sekhema - Guarantee finding that elusive Maraketh army!
- Legion Scarab of Eternal Conflict - Madness!
- This Scarab lets you break the same monster out of stasis multiple times, essentially making it stronger and more rewarding the more you do it. Careful not to juice it up too hard!
Not a huge fan of Legion as a whole, but still want some of its loot? There's plentiful other places you can find it. Open the box below to see wherever else you can find Timeless Splinters and Incubators.
- Incubators and Timeless Splinters can drop from Legion-specific reward chests in other content such as Heist or Blight.
- You may occasionally stumble upon a Legion Monolith in the Azurite Mine (Delve).
- You may find the Hall of Mettle (and its upgraded versions) room in the Temple of Atzoatl, which contain a Legion Monolith (Incursion).
- Timeless Splinters may occasionally be available for purchase from Ritual Altars and Tujen (Expedition).
- Kirac Atlas Missions sometimes have the objective of activating a Legion Monolith.
- Delirium mirrors have a chance to grant Legion rewards, and you can guarantee them on a map by using a Timeless Delirium Orb.
- Allocating Vagan in the Transportation Safehouse in Betrayal will make him room contain a chest with Timeless Splinters.
- Allocating him in Fortification, his room will contain Legion chests / war hoards.
- Allocating him in Research, his room will contains chests with Incubators.
