We've received insight into a survey Blizzard sent out to some players asking about a Hearthstone "battle pass". This new addition to the game would potentially replace rewards from dailies, achievements, and simply winning games with a system based on experience. There are both paid and free versions of this battle pass that are discussed, and they have some very interesting rewards including alternate art for cards for the first time ever.
The survey states that this pass would launch with a new expansion and would last until the next set releases, giving you around 4 months to complete the pass. Earning the maximum amount of experience per week would take you 16 weeks to get the full 100 levels of the battle pass, where the main reward structure is.
Battle passes have become very popular with games over the past few years with it originating in Valve's DotA 2, back during The International tournament pass. The goal is simple: You play the game, earn experience, unlock rewards. The passes last a limited amount of time so they get players to engage more with the game so they don't miss out on rewards. Epic Games really pushed the battle pass approach to free-to-play monetization with its Battle Royale game, Fortnite, giving it a huge spotlight and getting other companies to jump on board such as rival Battle Royale, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds.
Whether you like them or hate them, the battle pass appears to be here to stay. Although this survey, which we're going to get into in a moment, is a solid indication of development plans for Hearthstone's new progression systems, it should not be taken literally for the rewards may change based on survey feedback. This is potentially good news for Hearthstone due to rival card game, Legends of Runeterra, being more rewarding to play and thus open to free to play players. If this pass is done right, this could be a huge boost to the free-to-play side of the game and may even beat out the pass that MTG Arena has been doing for a few sets now.
Let's check out that survey!
Types of Rewards Discussed
Here are all the different types of rewards mentioned in the survey.
- Latest Expansion Packs
- Prior Expansion Packs
- Upgradable Hero Skins
- Experience Boost for the Pass
- Arena Tickets
- Individual Random Cards
- A Choice of Hero Skins
- Alternate Art for The Coin
- Expansion Card Back
- Gold
Rewards Breakdown
Here is a breakdown of the rewards and what level you would obtain them at.
As you can see, the idea is that you'd be able to upgrade the skins of certain heroes with 3 different tiers available. We're assuming this means each upgrade they get cooler looking. Perhaps this is related to the new heroes that we datamined just over a week ago.
In total, here's what this pass would give you as a member of the free tier if you get to level 100.
- 18 Packs for the Latest Expansion
- 14 Packs for a Prior Standard Expansion
- 4 Arena Tickets
- 2 Legendary Cards
- 2 Epic Cards
- A choice of a Hero Skin (unknown list)
- Expansion related Card Back
- 3990 Gold
Paid members of the pass would receive these rewards in addition to the free ones:
- 1 Non-disenchantable Golden Legendary (Likely a unique legendary and not random)
- 2 Upgradeable Hero Skins (3 levels of upgrades each) (Jaina and Rexxar)
- 20% XP Boost for the Pass
- Alternate Art for The Coin
- 17 Packs for the Latest Expansion
- 14 Packs for a Prior Standard Expansion
- 4 Arena Tickets
- 2 Legendary Cards
- 2 Epic Cards
Additionally, all players are able to earn 25 Gold for each level above 100, to a cap of 150, which would grant you an additional 1250 Gold.
How This Changes Progression Now
The way it is explained in the survey, this would remove the Gold rewards from daily quests, winning 3 games, and achievements. Instead, you'd be earning experience from completing these tasks.
A rough maximum of experience earned per week is stated to be 9000. With a total XP count of 145000 being required for Level 100, a free to play pass player would have to max out their experience for 16 weeks - roughly the full 4 months. I don't know about you, but I've never maxed out my daily wins more than a handful of times which means if that's the metric to go by, this might be a hard experience for the free-to-play among us.
Other Mentions
In addition to the above, the following were mentioned.
- Appropriate gold costs for cosmetic upgrades.
- More upgradeable hero portraits.
- Emblems by your name depending on your current experience.
- Crafting cost discounts for cards from the current expansion.
- Customizable visual emotes.
Fitting Into the Year of the Phoenix Roadmap
Since earlier this year, we've already known that we'd be getting an achievement system and player progression update in Hearthstone during Phase 3, which means if this battle pass does happen, it should begin with Hearthstone's December expansion to allow the pass go through its full 4 months of play.
That still leaves the question of whether or not achievements gets launches with the December set or if we'll see it in the new year as some nice new bait to get everyone back into Hearthstone as things begin to calm down mid-set. We've also still got a few more "locked spells" so it will be interesting to see what the Hearthstone team is cooking.
Achievements & Progression - Phase 3
Comments
Hot garbage. Blizzard continues to screw invested players in order to satisfy casuals. Hope it backfires.
What are you talking about? This screws over casuals by capping out how much gold they can get between expansions.
Casual players are not necessarly poor f2p players, but simply those who play sporadically and non-competitively. They are not taking the game seriously nor they progress at full speed. Like me in MtG:A before; I had one deck there and played once a week some memes, not knowing much.
Many f2p players are fully focused, aware and knowledgeable about the game and grind for every piece of resource.
And the outlay of this Battlepass screws both these players, together with those who pay something. This only satisfy / encourages casuals by giving them to open 10-15 packs more throughout a season for their one deck in hope some percentage of that huge player-base will start paying money eventually.
You have no idea how much f2p players out there that literally mine the game. At the start of each expansion they collect around 10k w/o even playing arena and some of them are doing great in ladder. But you are right somehow, Blizzard *cough* Activision *cough* doesnt care. And by that Pass they want to push these players -who cannot just quit after 7 years of grinding- to spend them bucks. But you know who's the real winner? Legends of Runettera ...
I want to start an online petition to make Blizzard reconsider this. How many signatures do you think we’d need? Personally I think adding a paid battle pass is fine, but I feel like it should be in addition to the existing rewards structure.
If I start one I’ll need help spreading it around, spamming it in Twitch chats of Hearthstone streams, etc.
Just do it. Shit will fly and everyone will talk about it. Every idea is good to stop this stupid system to be implement in this shape.
I may wait to see if we get more info about this in the Developer talks on Tuesday, or whenever it is this week. If this pass system is actually in addition to the gold system... not so bad. If they implemented a battle pass while not messing with the current quest system I think it'd be great. Even if there was no free tier to the battle pass, or if the free tier offered way less in terms of rewards, who cares! Just leave the current quest system for those who grind out 80-100 or more packs worth of gold throughout the course of an expansion.
Of course if they would only add this battle pass to the current system it would be great. Sadly, the intensions are rather opposite. Time will tell.
Exactly! While the intent seems ill from the current information available, we need to wait and see the final product when they decide how to proceed. Perhaps the info that came out is incomplete, or they haven't really decided what they are going to do yet and what we got is an option they are considering. Or maybe if they are paying attention to the forums and can see all the negative feedback to this info coming out they will think about it and come up with a better solution like adding it to the current system instead of completely replacing it.
Of course I don't know what final decisions they will make, but I'm pretty certain that they paying attention on forums like this one, reddit, etc...
My interest in Hearthstone has been waning quite a bit since LoR won my heart.
This'll either make or break it for me.
I already lost my interest in hearthstone a long time ago, only come online from time to time to do the free packs from tavern brawls and events(even stopped trying to get the the ranked card backs cuz i don't have fun playing it anymore). But this just makes it worse and doesn't make me play it more like they say... actually it makes me want to play it less. Hope they realise this is not a good move.
Just cuz battlepasses are everywhere these days doesn't mean you should make one
This sounds like it would really suck. I built up about 8500 gold for Scholomance after plowing every bit of gold into Ashes of Outland packs on day 1 and not spending any after that. So I got 85 packs on day 1 of Scholomance. This thing, if I am understanding it right, proposes to give me enough gold for 39 packs on launch and then slowly trickle out another 18 packs over 4 months.
Some real "don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining" stuff if Blizzard goes through with this and acts like they've improved the experience for the F2P player.
what is the meaning of
Likely a unique legendary and not random [Non-disenchantable Golden Legendary (Likely a unique legendary and not random)]
(sorry not mother tongue) - tks
A fun legendary like whizbang or ETC or that one from rise of shadows. A noncompetitive card that has some nobility to it.
It could also be a competitive legendary like Archmage Vargoth or Kael'thas Sunstrider where everyone gets the normal version but the gold version is part of the paid battlepass rewards.
A rough maximum of experience earned per week is stated to be 9000.
and you need 147000 EXP for 100 level
[49500 exp for level 50]
147000 / 9000 = 17 week
17 week > 4 months.
no :)
52 weeks in one year
52/3 = 17.3333 :)
It seems terrible to me.
As a paid player, I pay for card packs and hero skins. The existing mission and 10 gold per 3 wins don't bother me because I often AFK hearthstone for several days. So, whether the mission system change to pass system or not is not my first concern.
But I pay for the hero skins, and I can't accept that I have to play many games to unlock what I bought.
If the hero skins and the extra things(hero skins, coin art) will be unlocked immediately, it seems ok to me.
I gave up many Japanese mobile games because I HAVE TO waste much time on them EVERY DAY. The main reason I insist on Hearthstone is that I don't have to play every day. I play when I want to play, and put it aside when I don't want to play. If I HAVE TO play Hearthstone to unlock my hero skins which I bought, maybe I will drop out then.
You must know that according to the pass system now you are given, I can only get the hero skins after I am bored with the expansion and wait for next expansion(maybe I will go to battleground), so if the hero skins valuable for me since I don't play deckbuild mode anymore?
And another thing must mention is that: I collect all cards when the new expansion is available, so the prior expansion packs are 0 value to me.
Right now: 30 days of daily quests gives us something between 1500** and 1800 gold**, so 4 months the old system gives us something between 6000** and 7200** (i personally get something between 8k and 10k, which gives me a nice boost every expansion)
If it takes us 4 months to get the 100 levels (hoping that even casuals, that right now can only afford to finish dailies at once when there is 3 of them, can also get level 100), then the same period will gives us 57 times 70g = 3990g. Every beginning of expansion you will have half the packs to open. You'll also get 18 "latest expansion packs" and 14 "prior expansion packs" (i'm assuming that by "prior" they mean 1 expansion older than the latest, which has even less value).
With this new system f2p players will get even worse start of expansion and blizzard try to not look bad enough by pointing out that players can get what they miss through those 4 months. No, they can't. Even if we naively count 1 pack = 100g (not taking in consideration which expansion is it or when you're opening the packs), it's still 7200g, which is waaaaay below the amount of gold i personally reach every expansion. And then they throw 2 legendaries there and some arena tickets to make players feel awesome when they get to that level.
How activision keeps getting away with this? The competition gets harder and they keep making the game worse for F2P. They already raised the number of legendaries from 1 to each class to 3, making legendaries and epics way more useful and "must have" than it used to be and now they also want to cut our gold too? God dammit activision, god dammit...
**not counting possible 80-100g quests and those 10g of victories
