an addition to the no duplicate rule?

Submitted 4 years, 3 months ago by

Now I have to explain this, but it is something that seems like it can't just be a coincidence.

After opening my initial packs in Scholomance I had opened a bunch of golden rares (about 5 total). Now I never keep golden rares because I don't like to waste extra dust, however, with the no duplicate rule it makes it so a golden rare counts to the limit, meaning you won't be able to open normal copies until after you've collected all the rares in the set. This, I thought, would mean that there is very little chance of getting the non-golden rares from packs to be able to disenchant the golden ones.

However, today I opened my ranked rewards and for some reason I got all of the remaining non-golden rares from the Scholomance set (I had previously opened my last missing one a few days ago). Essentially, what I believe to be the case is that there is a seperate no-dupe counter for your non-golden cards that will go into effect once you've opened all rares of a set and will prioritize all cards that you don't own 2 non-golden copies of. I assume this also applies to commons and epics (and legendaries I guess).

Was this ever explicitly stated? Because regardless it's a very nice QoL feature for those who want to maximize dust and don't care about goldens.

dunno, didn't get my disenchanted rares (from nerfs) so that doesn't count. I think.. I just now am missing one rare I didn't ever had in sholomance so I can report next month if this is something you can get.

I mean I'm pretty sure it's the case because what are the odds of getting 5 specific cards as normals within 5 packs right after completing the rare collection for Scholomance. If that was just coincidence then I must be the unluckiest person in the world, because all that RNG could have gone towards a golden leggy

I think you're right, I noticed the same thing today when I FINALLY got my last rare and started getting duplicates.

The non-dupe rule only applies to non golden cards. So if you happen to only have one golden + 1 normal, you are guaranteed to open that 1 normal card in your packs. Another way of saying it; if you only have golden copies of a rare card, you are guaranteed to open normal copies of them in your packs.

Noticed that in the last expansion, not sure if its explicitly stated. I dont dust goldens unless I really need the dust (my dust bank is so full I dont need to anyway), so its more noticeable to me I guess.

I do believe it was stated somewhere that the rule is:

    1) You won’t open duplicates until you have all of that rarity in a set.

    2) Once you have 2 of each card in a rarity, 1 if each Legendary, your next cards in that rarity will be any cards you don’t have 2 normal copies of.

So yes, it back fills your golden cards with normal copies once you have all of that rarity.

I have the entire set of Outland thanks to this protection rule, and I opened a Legendary in the Felosophy bundle.  It was Lurker Below, which I have golden of from Pre-order.  So I DE’d the golden copy to craft something later.  My next one would be Lady Vashj as I also have her in golden.  My next Academy epics will be Braggart or Devout Pupil because of this rule.

Quick!  Someone give me something clever to write here.

That's not entirely true... Golden cards do count for the non-dupe rule until you collect all cards of that rarity. Only then, the non golden gaps fill up.
I wasn't sure this was a set rule since i've never read something about it but i kept noticing this to happen.

The fact that other players noticed the same thing is proving this rule for me.
Actually a pretty nice feature for all the people who disenchant all their golden cards.

But now that we're on the topic: How does the non-dupe rule handles crafted cards? Will it prioritize those card once you have a full collection?
Or do crafted cards simply count as "opened"?

Crafted cards are considered "owned", just as if you opened them. I remember Blizzard being very clear about this when this was introduced

I can't prove it since I don't keep a detailed history of my pack openings. But I'm pretty sure I've encountered situations where I got a golden and a normal of a certain card, then got the other normal before I got the whole collection of that tier.

But this is one of those things that needs a dev to confirm, so I'll just leave it at that.

All I know is this: duplicate protection has been a great thing for people who play this game. Scholomance Academy is the first expansion where I have essentially all the epics (missing two cards) without having crafted any. I bought both pre-orders, and used gold for a three dozen more packs.  It's been a huge quality of life improvement.

It also allowed me to build out my rares/commons collection in Wild really efficiently a couple months ago - I used gold to buy old expansion packs to broaden my reach in that format.

    Wholeheartedly agree.

My next hope is they reduce on the pity timer from 40 to 30, even they retain the average chance at 20.

3 Legendaries out of 105+ packs has been my most disappointing experience this expansion.
