Trick And Treat - Card Design Competition Discussion Thread

Competition Theme: Trick And Treat

For this competition, we've decided to give you a treat - you get to choose any of these three options for your card to qualify!

  • Spooky Noises
    • Design a card with the Echo keyword
      • We will allow 'Repeatable this turn' as well, though Echo is far more flavourful
  • Not As They Seem
    • Design a card which transforms a minion in some way
      • Minions which transform themselves (like Shifter Zerus or the worgen cards) also count for this prompt
  • Rise Of The Dead
    • Design a card which generates dead minions
      • This could be through Resurrect effects, or cards like Raise Dead, or some other interpretation - as long as the minions died at some point, you're good

  • The Baroness was originally a card for my Lich class; he had ways to reduce minion Health to combo with this effect.

    Linkblade I think baroness is super weak in priest since they have to way to cheat health that I can recall and it would be kind of easy to play around since you might know it's coming like why leave that 1 health Ragnaros alive for another turn? I really like the spade and could see it in hunter decks back when deathrattles were one of their big gimmicks

    Demonx95: I like it I don't really have anything else to say its a nice little card that seems balanced to me.

    Linkblade91, Personally, I prefer Gravedigger Spade. I think it is easier to use, and I would love some support for Deathrattle Hunter. Baroness Anastari seems kind of hard to use. 8 mana for 1 damage is a lot more difficult to utilize than 4 mana for 2 damage.

    Demonxz95, It's neat, but I really don't want anything that makes it easier for priests to resurrect things. 

    MenacingBagel, Interesting idea, but it feels a bit weird. You will only be able to squeeze out a total of 9 damage and that is if you spend all of your mana in a turn summoning 2/2 minions. I like the "upgrades when it dies" bit, but the card just seems kind of under powered.

  • Thought I'd flip Resurrect on its head by letting you steal an enemy minion that died.

    Feedback time:

    MenacingBagel: I like it, but you might want to change the wording to make it easier to read (and also to fit better with game standards). Maybe try "Echo. Deathrattle: Deal 1 damage to the enemy hero for each Haunted Effigy that's died this game".

    Demonxz95: Good design, not much else to say.

    linkblade91. Gravedigger Spade seems fine, but the Baroness seems like she'd take too much setup to be all that useful in most situations.

    KANSAS: You should probably double the damage and raise it to 2 Mana since all of the Echo cards in-game are either 2 or 3 Mana.

    I took the challenge to heart and tried to do all 3 at once:

    I can't decide if its too strong or too weak - probably means its not very balanced, but I'd like some thoughts about it.

    I'll give some feedback when theres some more discussion posts.

  • Well I've made some tweaks based on feedback buffed how much damage you could do and changed the wording based on Hordaki and myself

  • I tried to do all 3 at once, but I see that someone else beat me to it. Oh well, this one is a Priest card with Deathrattle (and potentially silence) synergy.

  • My Hallow's End idea, straight from under the shower:

    I was a bit surprised there isn't already such a card somewhere in the solo content. I'm not sure yet if it should cost 2 or 3 and the effect might even be worth an epic. Feedback would be very appreciated and if somebody has good totem art, please let me know!

    I'll try to add feedback later, but life keeps me busy these days.

    Hers's a first idea. Echo is a strange mechanic to balance, so maybe need some changes, but I liked the punt plus Halloween theme.

    Edit: I forget to put the Treant tribe in the token, then I remembered tha Treant ins't a tribe... Why Old Gods, why...

    • will not trigger deathrattle (it did not died)
    • will not trigger any effect on minion death (again, it did not died)

    The minion will still hit (and may kill) Ghoul Kidnapper.

    Linkblade91 - Gravedigger's Spade is a neat weapon. It can certainly be strong, although the setup and waiting required to do that (in Hunter no less) balances that. Baroness Anastari was a neat card in your Lich class, but it feels a bit difficult to use in Priest.

    MenacingBagel - There are a few problems here. Namely, there are grammar and syntax mistakes as there should be a period (or "full stop" if you're more familiar with that terminology) after Echo, and the 1 should not be around brackets. Cards that upgrade just have the number by itself in numeric form (i.e Nethrandamus or Cram Session). Echo also should not be used with a custom watermark as Echo as a keyword only exists in The Witchwood (barring SN1P-SN4P). You should either make it a Witchwood card, or change Echo to "Repeatable this turn" if possible.

    KANSAS - It needs more cowbell! Haha, I actually quite like this card.

    Hordaki - The problem I see with ressurecting enemy minions is that they're likely not going to design their deck in a way to only use good ressurecting targets (unless you're specifically playing a mirror match), thus you should probably make it stronger to compensate.

    Arkasaur - The madman! I don't know if this was intentional or not, but somethinig I actually like about the card is that you can just use small minions and use this card against enemy minions. In that case, I think it'd be pretty neat. It's not really that good for your own minions though as summoning Totems will get in th way of the effect.

    RealJC1234TheToonist - I see that you've already submitted your card, but I suppose it's a bit of a cool way to implement all 3 prompt choices at once. I think compared to Twilight's Call from the set previous to this card, it seems weak though.

    Anchorm4n - I see someone was inspired by the new Duels mode. *wink, wink* - It's a bit basic, but it's a neat design in my opinion.

    DavnanKillder - I feel like Echo is supposed to be before Choose One in effect order as other Echo cards are like that. Even if the Treant option is blantantly stronger than the heal option a lot of the time, it's still a neat choice card. I guess the only complaint here is that Witchwood also has its own Treant art, so I don't see the need to introduce another one. The choice cards also should not have rarities on them.

    Alfi - Unfortunately, I don't see which of the three prompts this card is supposed to fit. It also shouldn't use the Classic watermark when it has Rush.

      Edit: I've also put some more thought into the effect. Do you think transforming into random minions that cost (1) more would be too weak? You're right when you say it's basic, I did that intentionally. At (2) more might be too much in that regard...

        I compared it to Duels because the Shaman treasure for Duels is also a Totem that evolves adjacent minions: Fluctuating Totem.

        I feel like from a pure balance perspective, 2 more seems fine since it requires board setup and your opponent can always kill the Totem to stop it.

    Thinking about making Horrifying Scream a Hunter card (depicting Sylvanas instead of a random Banshee) or Chromie a Neutral. It's Alive! is too hard to balance, so I don't think I'll go with it.

    Gravedigger Spade is a bit weird in Hunter. Sure, it can't be a Priest card because it's a weapon and the fact that it only targets Deathrattles kinda fits Hunter, but I still don't see it.

    I like Baroness Anastari's concept, but she's very weak right now, given Priest doesn't have ways to reduce Health like Lich did. I'd bump her damage to 2 or even 3, with a stat reduction maybe.

    Acolyte of N'zoth doesn't have Echo. 0/10. Seriously now, I like how both mechanics mesh together, but it's a bit complex and wordy, which tends to be a hinderance.

    Felsoul Harvester isn't bad, but it's a bit bland.

    Overall, I prefer the Acolyte of N'zoth.

    The second wording is the one which makes the most sense. Interesting effect, even if a bit too complex.

    I'd try to find a better art, however. I didn't see that's a scarecrow until you said it. Not like a scarecrow really fits the effect nor the name, also.

    Resurrect + Steal makes a lot of sense in Priest. Kinda surprising Blizz hasn't made a card like that yet. Probably my favorite card so far.

    I think this card would really benefit from being Dual Priest + Shaman. I'd recomend using a custom watermark if you do this, since the Priest + Shaman combination isn't featured in Scholomance.

    I think it should either cost 3 or cost 2 but only evolve for 1. The current rarity is fine IMO, but it wouldn't feel out of place as an Epic, either.

  • Damn, didn't see this contest until the Oozefest announcement.  My initial idea Revenge of the Wild but for Warlocks.  It works well for refilling boards after a Plague of Flames or some other board clear, but could also be used to get back high value demons like Enhanced Dreadlord.

    BloodMefist - I would increase the cost of the card to 3, personally. Demons as a whole usually are larger or have negative Battlecries to make up for superior statlines/effects (that you would be dodging with the revive); reviving a Demon will generally be more worth it than reviving a Beast. Changing the cost also keeps it from being literally "Revenge of the Wild, but Demons", which seems kind of lazy to be honest :/

    Wailor - I like the idea of Horrifying Scream being a Hunter card with Sylvanas; being a Priest card unintentionally increases its power level, because the Priest often doesn't play minions in the early/mid game. In that sense, you've given Deadly Shot to a class with a ton of removal already. All of that being said, Chromie might get you farther because other people like that sort of thing.

    AnAngryBadger - I'm not a fan of the card, mostly because you're taking away from the uniqueness of Deathstalker Rexxar in the same set as the DK itself. Other than that, Beasts should be capitalized and it needs a period at the end of the sentence.

    DavnanKillder - Wouldn't it be better to name a card "Trick'r Treant?" Because "Treat" and "Treant" are so close together. Right now it comes off rather forced. Clever Impersonator should say "Battlecry: Destroy an enemy minion and become a copy of it."

    Demonxz95 - I like Felsoul Harvester. You ideally want to revive something big, but then you'll be sitting on this guy for a while so it balances out somewhat. Is it better than Acolyte of N'Zoth, though? I would say "No."

    Alfi - As Demonxz95 noted, it doesn't really fit any of the themes we're looking for :(

    anchorm4n - I would make the totem 3-mana, because double-Evolve in one card is very efficient. Although people might knock it for the similarity to Fluctuating Totem, as Demon suggested.

    RealJC1234TheToonist - I appreciate the effort of trying to fulfill all three conditions at once, but this seems like an overly-complicated version of Shadowy Figure. They're not the same, obviously, because yours relies on dead minions, but still too complex for me.

    MenacingBagel - I think the second iteration, name-dropping Haunted Effigy in the Deathrattle, is the right way to go.

    Arkasaur - That it doesn't specify the minions have to be "friendly" generally makes this card weak, I think, as you might pull a minion from the enemy graveyard that doesn't mesh with your strategy. If it *did* specify friendly minions, you could use this in a Big Shaman deck to turn something small into a much better minion with some regularity.

    Hordaki - Seems fine. As I just said with Arkasaur, enemy minions don't usually work well with one's strategy, so you're really just looking for a good body (or a Deathrattle, if you're lucky).

    KANSAS - I agree with Hordaki: I think you should up the damage and the cost appropriately, to rein in how many times you can trigger what is otherwise a Rapid Fire with Lifesteal.

      The card seems fine from a functionality standpoint, although a 4/5/6 with Lifesteal and Rush is OP. Granted you have to wait two turns for that outcome, so maybe it checks out. Still seems rather strong for a Neutral. Flavor-wise, I have no idea why a pumpkin has Lifesteal or Rush.

  • Here's my Idea:

    I wanted to make a Shapeshifting Legendary that is actually playable (sorry Zerus and Chameleos) so I added the restriction of it only transforming into playable (able to be cast with your current mana) class cards in the opponent's hand. This means that it draws from a higher quality pool (class minions), it is never a dead card (it only transforms into playable cards), and it has synergy with Thief Rogue. I decided to make it a dual-class Rogue/Priest card because the effect I wanted only works as a combination of Rogue and Priest thief mechanics. The art shows a Dragon, which made me consider making it a Dragon, but I think this would be too much of a lowroll for cards like Ysera, Unleashed and this type of card shouldn't be discoverable off of Lackeys. 

    Any thoughts? Would this be powerful enough to actually see play?

  • Got quite a few ideas for this comp, the last of which I'll also use for the regular competition. Linkblade pointed out that the first version of Arcane Evolution would leave you without Spell Damage minions, so I made another one.

    CursedParrot: The idea is good, but sadly Priest/Rogue isn't a Scholomance combo. Either use a custom expansion set, or limit it to one of the classes.

    R: Card looks interesting, but if you change it's flavour, I might wait for that version to come out.

    BloodMefist: This is really crazy in Demon Warlock. Any sort of board clear can be negated with it. I'm not sure Iike it.

    AnAngryBadger: I'd say it counts, and the effect is pretty interesting. The problem is going to be stitching together 2 Zombeasts, lol. I assume this adds the card to your hand?

    DavnanKillder: Treant'r Treat (I think there's a typo in there) is pretty interesting, not sure about the balance. I'd make it cost 3 and restore 5 Heatlh. I don't like Impersonator.

    Wailor: Horrifying Scream is too strong, especially with [Hearthstone Card (Radiant Elemntal) Not Found] (which I think was still standard when Witchwood launched). Chromie is probaly my favourite, but I see no reason for her to be a 5 mana 5/5. It's Alive! has the same problems as AnAgryBadger's card, except yours has the potential to summon a really powerful beast.

    Clever Impersonator is basically a marginally worse Mind Control for 8 Mana, so it breaks class identity and might be OP.

    Natural Evolution is probably my favorite. Flavor-wise, the concept of natural evolution (as in darwinism) makes a lot of sense in a school-based expansion. Also, the concept of using your mana to evolve your minions by that much is very elegant. Sadly enough, I don't think the card will be very well received, however, since it's very wordy.

    Out of the other cards, the epic Arcane Evolution is also cool, but it'd be funny if you presented the same card (Recycling Module) in both comps.

    Wailor - I see you've already submitted Chromie. She was my favorite of the three anyway, so nothing is lost here.

    Davnankillder - I too prefer Treant'r Treat, and it looks good. Clever Impersonator isn't bad per se, but it's not that interesting.

    AnAngryBadger - I pretty much have the same thoughts as everyone else on this card.

    BloodMefist - I'm not sure what to think of this card. Revenge of the Wild wasn't too great, but Warlock can definitely use this effect easier than Hunter can. It can be kinda scary if you have Twisting Nether since this card will basically negate the destruction of your own minions.

    R - I'm pretty much in the same boat. It's not really flavorful, but it's kinda neat. It's also not very intuitive which way it swaps. Do the stats rotate clockwise (6/4/5 -> 4/5/6 -> 5/6/4 -> Repeat) or counter-clockwise (6/4/5 -> 5/6/4 -> 4/5/6 -> Repeat)?

    CursedParrot - As Nirast pointed out, Rogue/Priest does not exist, so it shouldn't use the Scholomance watermark. I will also have to agree with Wailor that it's too similar to Chameleos.

    Nirast - I personally prefer Recycling Module out of the bunch. I like it, it's like an Ancestral Spirit + 2/2 stats for 3 mana.

  • Hi everybody!

    Before sending my entry I want to know if it's well typed, is understandable and, of course, if you think that is a valid engry and is interesting :P

    The main idea of this card is to play around another kind of "secrets" with your opponent. You choose one enemy (no matter who owns it) and whenever it takes damage a random minion of the same cost is summoned. I think it's pretty versatile because you can avoid that big threat or taunt minion you have in front of you but also "revive" one of your minions that is about o die.

    I decide giving it the "same cost" in order to "balance" it. I'd love to put the "cost one more" but for sure most of the time the target will be a minion you own. At the same time costing one less could happen the opposite.

    A third idea could be summoning a random (x) cost minion providing the card a, maybe, more interesting play around it.

    I don't know, what do you think? :)

     

     

    @DavnanKillder love the flavour of your pumpkin card. Seems pretty balanced and being echo gives the card a lot of versatility.

  • I submitted in the submission area, but i'll add it here as well for feedback

     

    This is the baseline card, and every time he comes back he gets less and less scary, like a bad jump scare. You can in total deal 10 damage if you so desire or you can have the persistent ghost go home in defeat.

  • This is my submitted card for the Trick-and-Treat design competition:

    Plague of the Undead

    This is my first time joining a card design competition, so don't be too rough on me! 😅

    Some background info on the ideas behind this card; I tried to fullfil all 3 options and the purpose of my Echo mechanic is to function as a re-roll or mulligan for the resurrect effect. I decided to create a dual class spell, coz this cardframe looks cooler. Theme-wise I think it fits within the 2 chosen classes (Priest & Warlock) similar to Raise Dead. I specifically did not want to use the Discover mechanic coz that would be way too powerful and also not the random keyword, coz I feel we have enough RNG in the game already. Do NOT get me started on the impending Yogg-Saron, Master of Fate from the Madness at the Darkmoon Faire expansion 🤐

    Btw, I created another card for this competition afterwards, but apparently it is not possible to add more submissions.

      Different people will have different criteria for how they grade cards and consider some aspects more important than others. Proper grammar and English usage is probably one of the more ubiquitous ones.

      One thing about your card that stands out to me is the amount of set conflict it has. It uses the Darkmoon Faire watermark, uses a mechanic that might come back later but not in this set (dual-class cards), and a keyword exclusive to The Witchwood. You have three things exclusive to one set meshed into one card, which makes the card look unfocused. The watermark that you use on your card often reflects the creator's professionalism. I see a lot of submissions use Classic watermarks on cards that cannot exist in Classic (at least in its current state), usually in the form of a mechanic that does not exist in Classic. I've always given at least a 1-star penalty to cards with unfitting watermarks, and sometimes more if there's other implications from the set choice. If your card is not designed with any particular set in mind, then it's best to use a custom watermark.

      In the case of your card, set conflict reflects poorly on the card. You should either:

      • Make the card mono-class and move it to The Witchwood.
      • Keep the card dual-class, but move it to Scholomance Academy, and change Echo to "repeatable this turn".
      • Make the card mono-class and change Echo to "repeatable this turn".

        I was unaware that adding cards to existing sets was considered okay. That was my only reasoning behind the usage of the Darkmoon Faire watermark, since that set is still unreleased and potentially might include a similar card as mine. Better to 'always' use a completely fictional watermark I guess, which I did not even notice when creating my card ;-)

          Using a custom watermark is a good idea since there's no negative side-effects associated with using one.

          The way I've always seen it, using an existing set watermark isn't necessarily a sign that the card is being added to that set or replacing an existing card in that set (although it can occasionally be used for that purpose), but rather that the card is simply designed in a way to suit that set mechanically or flavorfully.

      Problem here I notice is that it uses the same art as Desperate Stand. And it's in the same set!

      One other slightly unfortunate thing about the card is that you need to resurrect a Deathrattle minion or else it basically does nothing.
