Dean Ayala and Chadd Nervig spoke a bit about how XP is calculated for Hearthstone's new progression system that launches later today.
- Experience gains are time-based.
- Individual games have an XP cap at the 30-minute mark.
- Blizzard says the majority of XP for players will come from quests. This does not apply to the hardcore.
- Each mode has a different value of experience gain. Ranked Constructed appears to be the highest.
- There is currently no cap to how much XP you can earn in a single day outside of the per hour caps.
- This will change to counter bots.
- The limit will be something almost no one will see with natural play.
XP Per Hour for Progression 2.0
These are the known values for XP/Hour for Hearthstone's game modes.
- 400 XP/Hour for Ranked Standard
- 400 XP/Hour for Ranked Wild
- 300 XP/Hour for Battlegrounds
Quote From Dean Ayala There are different values for different modes, winning matters. XP is time-based. Ranked Wild/Standard is around 400/Hour. Outside of the very hardcore player, majority of XP comes from quests.
Wanted to find a balance between rewarding players just for playing, but making it so most rewards were still easily attainable through daily objectives as opposed to having to play for hours on end.
Is there a cap on how much XP you can earn per day ala the old 100 gold cap per day?
Not yet, but planning to implement one to disincentivize bots. Goal is to create something almost no one ever runs into with natural play. Ran out of time for 19.0 to get something in, though.
Wait, if it's time based, does that mean roping the opponent increases your XP? Please tell me it's not so.
Was a mild concern, but of all the ways to get do we found time to have the fewest downsides. There is an XP cap on each game around 30 min. (@IksarHS)
Additionally, if you're losing, you're more incentivized to get out of that game quick, and on to a potentially-winning game, due to the bonus for winning. (@Celestalon)
Additionally, Chadd Nervig spoke about XP in Battlegrounds.
Quote From Chadd Nervig How does that stack up against XP earned for Battlegrounds? Since quests and achievements generally can't be completed through Battlegrounds, does that mean it has boosted XP gain?
There are quests and achievements for Battlegrounds. Battlegrounds is around ~300xp/hr. (BGs give rewards now, woo!)
This seems to contradict the information given in the patch notes, which implies only a very small portion of the quests and achievements can be completed in BGs, while the large majority is Ranked/Duels/Arena. Maybe this will be cleared up once we see the whole system (will we?)
There are several quests, and a whole huge section of achievements, specifically for Battlegrounds. The quests/achievements that rely on traditional Hearthstone gameplay naturally don't work in Battlegrounds.
Comments
You could try playing for a week and seeing how it works out.
And what about the XP/Hour in Duels and Arena?
And what about the droid attack on the wookies?
EDIT: jokes aside i think it may be due to the fact they already have a reward system for those modes. although theres the casual mode in Duels right? interesting
I might just start running Nozdormu to punish people who are most definately going to run the full turn timer every turn every game because there's always a large number of people trying to exploit a system for everything it's got
While the system doesn't punish ropers, it doesn't really reward them either, since any time played gains XP, so they might as well actually play the game during that time and maybe have some fun.
The only way you know about time-based XP is by reading the devs' comments about it -- where they explicitly spell it out for you that it's better to finish your game and start a new one.
So anyone roping for XP is exceptionally stupid.
Fixed! Some RenoLock in Wild was doing this to me earlier and I'm sure he thought he had me at one point because I also decided to rope a turn. But only because he had been roping all game, he was at 4 HP with a huge board, some of them big taunts, he had cleared my board, and I was top decking. But unfortunately for him I top decked an Arcane Amplifier while playing an Odd Mage deck... again he was at 4 HP.
I just wanted to give him some hope that I had rage quit before realizing he had lost! Does that make me a bad person?! Maybe... Don't judge me!
I don't believe anyone thinking it through would actually do that. In the same amount of time that they are wasting time, they could be playing another match. The gameplay time is the same.
If you read this site then you already know, but just in case:
Clear your quests now leaving empty quest log
PM'd my friends on NA and EU and about 10 of them didn't know.
What I like about this system is that it rewards playtime and not whether you win or lose. You don't get gimped out of gold if you have a bad day and can't win a single game. Additionally, it looks like you'll get the same amount of XP if you play twelve 5-minute games with aggro and if you play two 30-minute games with a control deck, allowing players to not be disadvantaged by playing slower decks. And if the numbers Blizzard showed are valid, all players (except the super-hardcore) shouldn't feel any difference in the gold they gain per expansion. Perhaps this battle pass isn't as bad as we were worried about.
Nice observation, also I tend to play RNG decks or decks that tried to win with Yogg for example because I found them more fun.
But then I had to change to another decks to keep the winning consitency for quests and stuff.
If they have different caps per mode, does that mean after I cap out in Standard I could play a game in Wild or BGs to still earn XP before the Standard cap resets?!
There is no cap at the moment. When they do add a cap, it will be universal, not per mode, and it will be so high that you cannot reach it "through natural play," i.e, if you are not a bot.
if we can get exp for wild and standard then it means wild will have more players. thats pretty cool
So time played is now a factor, as opposed to just winning. I wonder if that will have an effect on the meta dissuading aggro favoring control for long stalled out games? I hope not. edit: No doesn't seem like it would - good.
Wasn't clear on what was meant by roping being a strategy some will employ or not. I hope not.
This does seem to confirm though that simply playing 3 games a day on my NA, EU and Asia accounts + laddering to D5 are not going to be enough. I hope not.
I guess in this new reward system there will always be upsides and downsides. Can't wait for achievements though and a shake up might be just what's needed. Will be interesting to see when we get more info about the XP progression from experience with the game.
If you get XP for time played, rather than number of games played, it would make no difference whether you played one 30-minute game or six 5-minute games.
That's a point and with the added benefit of potential win bonuses too.
As long a ladder queue time isn't like it is on EU Wild at some times during the day which I'm sure it's not for most.
But are they talking about XP gained for winning or what? Why is everything so unclear? I don't understand why they can't explain everything in a more clear way.
You are overthinking it. They are just saying that you will get XP based on how long you play for, regardless of whether you win or lose, and in pretty much all game modes. Just spend time in the game and you will be rewarded for that.
Don't worry too much about the minutiae like earning XP at different rates in different game modes and there being bonus XP for winning. Those are just XP versions of what we already have with getting 10g for 3 wins in some game modes but not all.
I'm not worry, my complain is about the poor information that we have. I think that at, maybe, 1-2 hours to have this new system, we don't have absolutely any clear information about him. We don't know how many will win per quest, we don't know how many exp will need to complete the pass and now they talk about an amount of XP that we can get but they don't say how we can get it.
I know that we will know everything for ourselves in minutes, but i think that there is some lack of comunication for their side.
