Update December 17, 2020 - Please see the new numbers in our new article here. The post below has not been modified for historical accuracy.
We've put together a handy table with all the experience requirements and rewards for the reward track, Hearthstone's new progression system.
- The variable rewards go up until level 50 at which point they become a simple 150 Gold every level.
- You earn experience by completing weekly quests, daily quests, and the gameplay Darkmoon Faire achievements.
- You also earn experience by just playing the game. The amount varies per mode.
Blizzard has stated in ranked play, you'll earn around 400 XP per hour (wins give more XP). If you wanted to hit the max level of the system, 150, it would therefore require you to play 1610 hours of ranked Hearthstone! That's 67 days straight which is definitely possible during the 4-month long cycle of the pass, and it doesn't include the achievements and dailies that you would complete along the way.
How Long to Get to Level 50?
In total, you're going to need to receive 196200 experience. We need to make a few assumptions though before we can give you any great math. For the sake of sanity, we'll assume the following:
- Every daily quest you receive is 800 XP (the lowest possible).
- You are playing ranked Hearthstone which grants 400 XP per hour.
So, how long is it going to take?
If you were to simply play games, you're looking at 20.4375 Days of gameplay. (196200 (XP for 50) / 400 (XP/Hour) / 24 (Hours Per Day)). Obviously, we're going to be doing much more than that though! This ends up being a difficult calculation to make though because there are a lot of factors involved, one being your collection.
Experience From Achievements
There are several achievements that reward experience and they are all from the Darkmoon Faire. We're assuming the XP portion of these achievements will be removed when the next expansion launches as to not make it too easy to level up in that expansion, but they're available now so let's use them.
- Each class has 5 different achievements.
- The first two achievements each reward 200 XP.
- The third achievement has 3 tiers rewarding 100 XP, 100XP, and 500 XP.
- The total experience earned is 1100 per class.
- There are 20 Neutral achievements.
- The experience rewards are different for each achievement.
- Completing all these achievements rewards 3800 XP.
With those achievements in mind, we get an easy total!
- 11000 XP earned from all class achievements.
- 3800 XP earned from Neutral achievements.
- 14800 XP earned from Darkmoon Faire Achievements.
Completing all these achievements gets you, from level 1 to level 14.
The only downside to the achievements is that they require having specific cards and you need to be playing every class. As I said, this is difficult to calculate!
Experience From Daily & Weekly Quests
Each week you can complete three weekly quests starting on each Monday and every day you are given a new Daily.
- 1 Weekly Quest will always be worth 2500 XP.
- 2 Weekly Quests will be worth 1750 XP.
- Your dailies are worth at least 800 XP.
With the above in mind, we're looking at 6000 XP per week earned from the weekly quests and an additional 5600 XP (at the minimum) from dailies.
Completing your weeklies and dailies for the week gives you (at the minimum) 11600 XP.
The Final Count(down)
We're going to assume that you play Hearthstone one hour per day to complete your daily quest and to make progression on your weekly ones. Assuming that is ranked play, because it is the highest value of XP per hour, that is 2800 XP per week.
So now we've got some baseline XP values to work with.
- Quests: 11600 XP per Week.
- Achievements: 14800 XP (once).
- Ranked Play: 2800 XP per Week.
That gives us a total of 14400 XP per week and a one time boost of 14800 XP. With us needing 196200 XP to get to 50, we can knock that down to 181400 XP after the completion of achievements. This lets us solve the rest easy.
181400 / 14400 (XP per Week) = 12.59 Weeks
With it taking just over 12 weeks, that's roughly 3 months or the full duration of the pass. So if you play an hour of Hearthstone a day and make sure you complete your quests and achievements each week, you'll definitely hit level 50 to get that sweet alternate hero prize.

An update on this XP level table after yesterday's new 19.2 patch would be most appreciated! :)
Guys, Flux,
this would indeed be Greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance, Josse - the Netherlands
(Or would you know where to find the correct numbers for the updated Track - up until lvl 350 ? )
So after Blizzard adjusted the reward track I am now at level 42 with 2950 in gold and 2100 in gold left to earn if I hit level 49. That adds up to 50 packs next expansion. For an FTP player...that won't be enough opened packs to be getting enough cards to build a decent deck to climb the ladder with. I still contend that FTP is going to shrink unless one is content with playing battlegrounds alone.
So if I read this correctly, a player should be able to hit 50 even without Achievements. In fact right up to about level 35 a player should average two levels per week if they do all dailies and weeklies.
I'm not even gonna go for Darkmoon Achievements. They are so contrived and not conducive to winning ranked games where they count.
My big question is, is the experience added retroactively. When i play games i like to buy them at the end when i can is see that ill get all the reward i want. if not im not buying.
If it isnt retroactively added im not buying it later since im loosing all the extra value i would have gotten when if i bought it early.
Blizzard is telling me buy it now or NEVER if it isn't retroactively added. it would also be nice to see what exp i would get if its retroactively.
I know this is disappointing for a lot of people but for me who play only battleground anymore this is a good system since I finaly get rewards. Before that a win (top 4) earned me 10 golds for a long game and the quests wasn't adapted to battleground.
For players like me its a good thing but I get that players who tryhard the game like I did years ago, doing all quests, playing several our to reach the 100 golds per day, it can be a loss.
First of all, thanks, Flux, that's very comprehensive and helpful.
However, I, for one, an going to find it difficult to complete all weekly quests consistently, as well as playing for about an hour each day. That's not a lot, but I have days where I can't find the time to play a single game, and if every day like that is going to require a day I play for two hours to compensate, this system is going to gain me considerably less.
This first week, e.g., I got a weekly quest of achieving 1st place in BG. As someone who has no perks and very little experience or desire to play BG, I changed the quest and instead got the one that requires to deal 2,000 damage in BG. I figured it was easier, played one game, finished 8th and saw I only dealt ~150 damage and realized this is just not going to happen. After they specifically said you're supposed to gain as much no matter which mode or style you play, I find this a problem.
It seems like in order to gain enough you don't only need to play your preferred mode and style, but play all the other ones as well in order to really get far in the track.
This new system is disappointing and provides significantly less gold to almost everyone. On reddit there are many complaints about it (including mine).
For all of you who wants to see, how much gold you will lose at the end of expansion cycle I created Google Sheets documents available on this link:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wXg1HLBM1mLohvsqefQ3wfofeMBtpo_Q/edit#gid=1951440614
Just save it to your Google Drive and edit playstyle cells according to your playing experience. You may be surprised.
This is awesome, thanks for doing it!
I think this conclusion is a bit misleading. I just threw together a small program to simulate daily and weekly quests in the old and new system (assuming you reroll 50g/800exp daily quests). This program doesn't actually consider gold for wins for exp for time played - it's just quest completion. The top level result is that you pretty consistently get more out of the new system in "gold equivalent"* rewards. (It's something like ~7300 gold vs. 7700 "gold equivalent" after 120 days of play)
Now, when you throw out the non-gold rewards, you do end up at something like ~7300 gold vs. 5200 gold for daily and weekly quests. But that requires treating all the other rewards as worthless, which seems really disingenuous to me. The early pack and card rewards are from the latest expansion and will be brand new when you get them (because the track resets at the start of every expansion). Those same "latest expansion packs" retain some of that value later in the cycle because of the bonus mini-set release and the duplicate protection.
* The "gold equivalent" rewards here assume that each pack is worth 100 gold, and that since the average pack is worth 100 dust, card values are determined by their dust value (legendaries are 400 gold, epics are 100 gold).
I do not count nongold rewards because of this statement:
[source]
We were later reassured that we don't lose any of our gold in the introduction video about new system (starts at 3:24).
And we were lied to in the face.
About old pack - in my opinion old packs are not equal gold. You need gold for new packs at the start of the expansion to stay competitive and old packs are in fact worthless for the matter. With this new system we get significantly less resources to get them, but it also forces us to work harder to gain fewer gold (all new Weekly quests). On top of that, there will be miniexpansion in the middle of an expansion cycle, that siphons hundreds and thousands more gold from our already thin pockets.
Just some additional numbers for those who are thinking about getting the tavern pass (I'm of two minds about it).
Without XP boost, XP from quests and 1 hour/day of ranked play over 17 weeks is 244,800. That gets you 6000 gold (not counting packs). With XP boost, you'll get 289,900 and 7500 gold instead.
If we don't count ranked play XP, then we're looking at 197,200XP/4350G without boost, and 232,700XP/7050G with boost.
in theory. I still would like to see what happen if I keep doing what I'm doing before the revamp, and see how much gold I can save until the end of expansion. Then I can judge if this new progression system is better or not. Occasionally I hit 8000 gold before the expansion hit.
And I'm talking about gold only, not the packs and cards value, since I need to buy new expansion packs from gold obviously.
It is still possible to do so with the tavern pass active, just look at your total XP at the end of the cycle and calculate with this formula:
UnboostedXP = 72960 + (BoostedXP - 83700) / 1.2
But you get dust from packs and cards, which means you do not need to spend as much gold.
Does anyone notice how the experience needed for level 49 is so high, then it's dropped halved for level 50.
Is it intentional like that?
First a correction: that is the experience to the NEXT level, so the halving happens just after you reach level 50.
It's very likely intentional yes. Everything up to level 50 is the main part, where you have the big carrot of the choice of hero skin dangling in front of you, meaning you won't mind the large gaps between levels. I'd even guess there's a psychological effect where it feels like you earned it more.
Everything after that, though, is just gold. It would feel much more frustrating to have such a large gap because the rewards aren't exciting. Plus, you'll note it gives 150 gold in about half the XP it gives 300 gold in levels 45-50, so the rate of gold acquisition is kept the same.
A big clarification that 3+ wins with Duels rewards experience the first time. I went on a 10-win run with Warlock and got huge bonuses for my first 3-10th wins. 8,200 experience all together (starts at 850 experience for 3-wins and goes up from there). I wonder if that'll be refreshed each expansion season. I assume Arena and Duels provide a per-hour experience gain similar to constructed. Good to have clarification on that, but the rewards for Duels wins at high levels are worth more than a daily quest and are worth attempting regularly (it will be tough for me to get to 11 or 12 wins for that last XP boost).
My initial reaction is disappointment. It doesn't look like the rewards will be equivalent to the old system. To make matters worse, I was hoping for something that would allow you to continue playing in your own way to reap similar benefits. Instead, it will take games in all modes, some meme-like achievements (that may or may not require specific cards), and a fair bit of time wasted poking around the Rewards Path to accept, find, and finalize rewards along the way. The Tavern Pass feels like a total slap in the face, as it looks like you basically pay $20 to get rewards you could earn without real money prior to this being implemented.
I bought the tavern pass but forgot to accept the 10% until after doing a few quests. So remember to accept the rewards.
