How soon is too soon to craft?

By now most of us have had a chance to make at least a few decks with the new cards.  We obviously have NOT had enough time to see what the meta will be like, let alone if the cards we liked in theory are worth a damn.

That being said, I am getting the itchy crafting finger to want to craft Tickatus and Y'Shaarj, the Defiler for a theory craft Wild deck I have.  Given that both of these are legendary, the craft cost is not cheap.  

So my questions I have to pose for the community is this... what are the cards you want to craft, and how long do you usually wait to craft cards after a release?

  • By now most of us have had a chance to make at least a few decks with the new cards.  We obviously have NOT had enough time to see what the meta will be like, let alone if the cards we liked in theory are worth a damn.

  • Y'Shaarj is very good however it only works for corrupt cards and they shouldnt reaper in future expansions. if u are tight on dust and or gold i wouldnt recommend crafting it

      I want to play with Y'Shaarj, the Defiler so badly, but know that it is like Making Mummies, where it's usefulness is going to be pinned solely to this expansion. Given that, I don't want to craft it, but it still would be a seemingly fun card

  • I've always recommended waiting 2 weeks before crafting anything to get a better look at the meta. A week can be a decent enough indicator though if days 5-7 don't see much movement in what is being played.

  • What Flux said, although I will add that there is definitely an emotional aspect to it. If you know you are going to want to try something regardless of the meta, then doing it sooner rather than later can be beneficial so you can mess around with it while the meta isn't so refined (which is often the most fun time). Underneath all this is the question of what type of player you are, and how closely you adhere to the meta when it forms. I would say if you are a casual player then you should feel happy to spend the dust a bit sooner than if the meta is important to you.

    I myself always craft the rogue cards immediately because I know I'll use them lots no matter what, but hold off a while on everything else, at least until I have tried out nearly all the cards I opened.

      I do similar things with Warlock cards.  I'm primarily a control Warlock player, but love combos as well.

  • I know this isn't very reasonable, but I usually craft what I want on day 1 if I don't get it from packs. Trying out new stuff is one of the most fun aspect of the game for me and I'm willing to bear the consequences of this behaviour. Of course that means having to dust duplicates on day 1, too, but I do it manually and save up rares and epics that might get nerfed. In the end, you have to ask yourself what you want from the game and how much resources you're willing to invest for that. If your goal is having fun trying out new stuff in an unshaped meta, go for it and don't look back. If you're on a budget and primarily want to go down the competitive road, better wait till the top dogs are figured out.

      This is what I do too, I usually have a list of cards I'm going to craft on day 1. These are usually cards that I feel could slot into many different decks though, or ones that I believe would be powerful. I crafted Il'gynoth yesterday because he just slots in perfectly to Soul DH, and I'm close to crafting the other Old Gods (I got golden Yogg from my bundle) because they'll figure into the meta one way or another. 

      Like anchorm4n said, it also depends on what your goal is. If you want to compete competitively, wait a week. If you just want to have fun, by all means, go craft what you want.

      A bit off topic but I really hope they add more QOL improvements for dust management.

      For example:

      • Ability to "lock" cards from getting dusted by the mass disenchant button
      • Ability specify which specific rarities to disenchant (like what you manually did above)
      • Ability to specify the minimum number of cards (for example now it's 2) that is safe from getting mass disenchanted.

        A bit of topic but I really hope they add more QOL improvements for dust management.

        For example:

        Totally would get behind that move!  Being able to lock down a card that just smells like a hard nerf for later full dust would be awesome.

  • If you care a lot about being competitive and staying relevant then you should wait for the meta to stabilize. But that costs you the freedom to experiment because once the meta settles new experiments are going to suffer a lot under the pressure of the other already refined meta decks. If you just want to have fun then you should craft what you want and play with it while you can. I'll get to level 25 in the reward track before i craft anything so i have a chance to get what i want and possibly save dust or have it available to craft cards from previous expansions (like Soulciologist Malicia). Then i'll just craft what i want to play with (N'Zoth, Yogg, Whatley).

  • I'm usually way too careful with my dust. Right now there are a lot of legendaries I would like to try out, but I'm not really sure wich one I would like to stick around with. As I would like to climb at least a little bit on the ladder before december I'm seriously considering crafting Grand Totem Eys'or now, since I enjoy Totem Shaman and the deck seems strong ATM. On the other hand it's future is very uncertain after Splitting Axe rotates in April so I haven't decided yet.

  • i agree with the previous comment. i wouldnt craft anything that its synergizes with cards that rotate in april

      I'm that way too. If I like something I'll craft it. Still dust is limited and I'm torn between Maxima Blastenheimer or Tickatus. Both look real fun. Plus I got High Exarch Yrel but have few other strong Paladin cards. Tempted by Lady Liadrin and High Abbess Alura here.

      I got lucky getting N'Zoth, God of the Deep as my freebie, who I wanted. Now it's down to a coinflip. Maybe wait another day or two see what decks look fun.

          If I open one of them, I could probably craft the other. Control Warlock decks are quite expensive though.

            Control Lock has historically always been quite expensive to build.  It is a solid deck that does wonderfully terrible things to your opponent, but it does take  A LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT of dust to make it.

  • Just go for Tickatus and skip y'shaarj.

    This way you can test the core of your concept for half the cost.

    Tickatus can easily be slapped into a Renolock or Demonlock shell with only minor risk, while the old god needs additional support that risks to make the deck suboptimal.

    Afterall, Brann Bronzebeard exists for 10 cards burns. Also, decks in Wild tend to draw way faster than 10 cards burn being a consistent wincon, making Y'shaarj redundant. Or you simply die before you can set it up. 

    Personally I dropped Tickatus but it was barely important in the few games I tried it. Its setup is slower than it seems on paper. So doubling it sounds like greedy overkill to me.

    PS: burned cards CAN accelerate fatigue if cards are burned, but it never triggers fatigue damage. So you don't immediately kill with tickatus. At best you setup one fatigue tick on next turn. So in the meanwhile you still have to survive for several turns unless you close the game by other means. It's not Coldlight Milling. Subtle but crucial.

      This is an important point. Some people think they can kill their opponents through fatigue damage through Tickatus, which doesn't happen. If there are no more cards in your opponent's deck, playing Tickatus won't trigger the fatigue damage you're hoping for because its card text says "remove the top 5 cards in your opponent's deck," it doesn't say draw cards. So if there's nothing to remove, Tickatus' effect is useless. 

      I've had some opponents BM me right before playing Tickatus when my deck is already empty, no doubt thinking they'd kill me with an avalanche of fatigue damage that doesn't happen. It's pretty funny.

      I ended up crafting both and I gotta say, that dropping the Tickatus corrupted and then doing it again when I play Y'Shaarj, the Defiler was great. Brann Bronzebeard, as always, barely made it a turn so I wasn't counting on him being on the board for anytime I drop it.  

      I did discover though that having 10 cards milled from highlander decks causes the opponent to concede REALLY quick.  I do play 1-2 other corrupted cards, so I grab a few when I drop the old god, so it's not a one trick pony. Cascading Disaster is amazing with control, AND should you corrupt it and Plot Twist, it retains it's corrupted state... which is AMAZING
