Hearthstone's Game Director, Ben Lee, has made an announcement on the rewards track and updates that will be arriving this month.
- December 15 - One-time login reward of 5 Darkmoon Faire packs and 500 Gold. (Available until Jan 18)
- The XP to get to level 50 is being reduced by almost 20%.
- Bonus levels past level 50 are being redesigned.
- Blizzard believes the rewards track to 50 should no longer require event XP. (Event XP bonuses are gone)
- When you login after the changes, you may be at a higher level than previously. No XP is being lost.
Reward Changes
- 50 Gold is being added to levels 27 and 30.
- The maximum bonus level is being increased to 350, up from 150.
- Levels past 50 will have their rewards split so you earn rewards in smaller chunks, faster. (50g per level)
Quest Changes
- Legendary Card and Arena weekly quests are being removed.
- Winning 7 games of ranked is being changed to 5.
- Tavern Brawls and Battlegrounds now contribute to quest progression.
- Some quests are having their numbers being tweaked to be easier to complete.
- All 800 XP quests now reward 900 XP.
We'll have all the datamined information once the client patch goes live next week. Blizzard also states that they are still not done with the rewards track and they will continue to evaluate the system until they get it right.
Quote From Ben Lee Since the launch of the new progression system, we’ve been listening to player feedback and carefully reviewing gameplay data from the first few weeks while designing a variety of updates to meaningfully address the elements that feel too slow, not rewarding, or too difficult to complete. We’re committed to getting this right. Our intent has been, and continues to be, to provide more rewards and a better progression experience than the previous system, and we’re sorry that our initial implementation missed that mark in a few important areas.
We’re ready to detail a series of changes that we will begin releasing later this month, and we will continue working to make the system even better over time. In this update, we will be adjusting or removing quests that players have let us know are too difficult to complete, reducing the amount of XP required to complete the 50-level rewards track by nearly 20%, adding two gold rewards on the track, and redesigning the bonus levels after level 50. We’re also planning a one-time log-in reward of 5 Darkmoon Faire packs and 500 Gold beginning on December 15th, which will be available until January 18th.
We want to make it clear that we aren’t treating the new rewards and progression systems as static, unchanging game elements, but rather a system that we can continually iterate on and improve over time. More enhancements will be coming to the rewards track in the future.
Here are the changes we are making later this month, as well as a quick look into the discussions we’re having for changes that will be coming early next year.
We’re adjusting a variety of daily and weekly quests to make them easier to complete.
We now have a large amount of player feedback and data based on the first few weeks of daily and weekly quest completion, and we’re making numerous changes to improve quests overall.
- We’re removing weekly quests that require Legendary cards and Arena runs. These quests are more difficult than intended for players due to the investment necessary. Frankly, these were a mistake and we shouldn’t have included them to begin with. They’ll no longer be in the quest pool after the update. Please note that if they are among your active quests after the update, they will not be automatically removed, but you can reroll them for a different quest.
- We’re changing the weekly quest “Win 7 Games of Ranked Play Mode” to “Win 5 Games of Ranked Play Mode.” This quest, as a guaranteed weekly quest, feels like it requires too much effort to complete. Adjusting the win requirement will ensure that a larger number of players will complete this weekly quest and keep up with the rewards.
- Tavern Brawls and Battlegrounds will now contribute to quest progress. Tavern Brawls and Battlegrounds will reward progress for any daily or weekly quests that they should naturally apply to. This should allow more flexibility in how to complete quests and make the rewards more consistent with previous gold earnings. For example, you’ll now be able to complete a quest like “Play Three Games as Priest, Rogue, or Warlock” by playing Tavern Brawls, and quests that require you to play Beasts, for example, can be completed by playing Beasts in Battlegrounds.
- We’re making small tweaks to certain quests. Some quests simply aren’t working as well as we think they should or are harder to complete than intended. For example, the quest “Play 50 Corrupt Cards” had a couple of issues making it too hard to complete. Now, Corrupted cards will properly count toward progress of this quest. We’re also reducing the requirement to 30 Corrupt Cards. These changes should make completing the quest much easier.
- All 800 XP daily quests will now reward 900 XP. We want to make quests feel more rewarding, so we’re increasing XP for daily quests so you can earn to your next rewards more quickly. Our hope is to make every quest feel like it rewards you for your time appropriately, and we’ll continue to make changes as needed.
We’re reducing the amount of XP needed to reach certain levels in the rewards track.
We’ve heard your feedback: higher levels of the reward track just take too much XP to reach. We originally included event reward XP when calculating our intended cadence of rewards. We’ve rethought this and recognize that the rewards track should stand on its own and not require event XP bonuses, making rewards predictable and consistent across an expansion. We will still have in-game events, of course, but they will remain consistent with our existing approach to event rewards instead of rewarding bonus XP for the rewards track.
We’re reducing the requirements of the current rewards track by a total of 37,000 XP (nearly 20%), which will make mid-to-late levels easier to reach and adjust for the absence of XP events. After this change, you’ll see that the XP requirement for a variety of levels will be lower and progression through levels will be faster. This is one step to ensure that progress through the rewards track feels consistent and doesn’t hit unusually slow periods of progress. The upcoming changes to daily and weekly quests should also support more rapid progress through these levels.
After this change is implemented, your existing earned XP value will be retained, so upon your next login you may see additional progress through levels based on your current XP total. Please review your rewards track to see what new rewards you may be able to claim.
We’re adding more gold rewards to certain levels of the rewards track.
We’re adding 50 gold to the current rewards for levels 27 and 30. This is a simple change based on the rewards for those levels feeling especially underwhelming, and this helps us inject more gold into the rewards track to address feedback about slower gold earnings.
We’re adjusting rewards track bonus levels to provide steadier gold income.
We’re redesigning the bonus rewards after completing levels 1-50. Player feedback highlighted how these bonus levels took too much time to earn, leading to long play sessions between rewards. The maximum bonus level is now 350, up from 150, and we’re splitting the XP and rewards across these levels. Each level beginning at level 51 will now take less XP to complete and reward 50 gold. After this change, you’ll see more rapid progress through these levels, though your earnings for each level will be smaller (as the XP and rewards have been split across 200 more levels). This will help players earn gold without an unusually high level of effort. We’ll be watching closely to ensure this gets players more predictable gold earnings.
What’s next?
As we said earlier, these will not be our final changes to Hearthstone’s rewards and progression. Like with all content and systems within the game, our intent is always to release content, monitor feedback and data, and make the right choices for our players. We knew this would be a new and complex system that required iteration, and we are committed to short-term changes and a long-term vision to make this a fun and rewarding part of Hearthstone. We also want to strike a balance between making changes quickly and ensuring that we get things right, and we’re taking additional time past this point to plan the next round of updates that we would like to implement in the future.
We have some ideas about tweaking the 1-50 experience to make progression feel even better for players. We will keep working on this system to get it right, and we will share more information as we finalize our future plans. We’re thankful and fortunate to have such a passionate community, and your constructive feedback is always heard.

This would be the first iteration if Blizzard Actually listened to feedback from the poll they made, the planning of the system was lacking and it still does have big flaws, and it was very buggy.
achievements: giving 1/5 of a daily quest, most of them being pointless and most that do reward you require a legendary/epic.
Duel requirements: arbitrary collection based, the mode was monetized so badly..
Meta: DH being oppressive af, in every mode.
Crafting system still outdated, and unfair.
Pack openings are still heavily skewed toward 40 dust packs.
The 500 gold and packs is like asking: "come back now, or miss this" (another FOMO) , but they should've just added it to the track in the early levels so new players don't miss out on that if they join in February.. Talking about new players there's still that problem (takes too long to catch up).
Tl;dr: this is good, but not enough and still doesn't address core issues of the game, it fixes the problem they introduced, instead of problems the game had for years.
There are several threads that offer tips to completing several of the achievements like this thread, or this thread without you having to own epics/legendaries.
It's not about owning the card, but more about the rewards being pointless points and low amounts of exp (why are they even less than a daily quest?)
Achhivements are a great way to Kickstart players and fix the gap of new player vs veteran, by adding a lot of exploration elements to the game, if for example most basic quests rewarded classic packs, while upgrading to gold/newest expansion packs/arena tickets in higher tiers it would make starting hs much easier.
It's both a missing opportunity and a bait the exp gained is very low, you better be getting them as an after thought rather than aim for them.
We’re removing weekly quests that require Legendary cards and Arena runs. These quests are more difficult than intended for players due to the investment necessary. Frankly, these were a mistake and we shouldn’t have included them to begin with.
So why were they? You knew exactly what you were doing and did it anyway. You're only changing things now because people called you out on your bullshit.
There's way too strong a desire to associate malice with the Hearthstone development team. (Apparently no one in the Hearthstone community has heard of Hanlon's Razor...)
As was already noted elsewhere on this thread, it's possible they intended to grant everyone an Old God as their "bonus legendary" and that changes were made over the course of development that threw that assumption out of whack. It's also possible they thought people would gravitate toward playing Duels to complete that quest, as it's pretty easy to get Darkmoon Faire Old Gods in that mode. Maybe they just thought adding that quest and the Play 50 Corrupt cards would get people excited about playing Darkmoon Faire cards, and that the cost of rerolling was low enough that it wouldn't matter if any individual player wanted to skip it because they'd get lots of chances to do so over the course of a week (and would be able to roll over one weekly quest to the next week if it came to that).
I don't work in the gaming industry, but I do work in software, and I've seen lots of examples of teams with the best intentions for positive user experiences making mistakes and frustrating users. It's not easy, and Blizzard has (as far back as August) been up front about how they were designing the system to be flexible so that if there were issues, they could go in and make changes. In retrospect, it feels like the biggest gap here was Blizzard thinking "rewards are a four month process, so it's okay if you have to roll over quests week to week, and it's okay if we wait until a major event to give you bonus XP, etc., because you have four months" while the community was thinking "rewards are a day-to-day event and I want to feel gratified every day I play." That gap can explain a lot of the missteps here without any need to assert malice.
It would have been nice if they had said "we hear you, we're working on it" a bit earlier, just to let people know they were listening, but I'm honestly not surprised they didn't given how incredibly toxic the Hearthstone community can be.
I like these changes, and it fixes a lot of problems with the battle pass! Also i won't ever say no to 5 free packs and 500 gold. (The 800 -> 900xp chance only matters if you re-roll it into another 800/900 exp quest.) The reduction of exp needed for higher levels is REALLY nice and something the community has been begging for so that's nice. The change that changes the amount of bonus levels doesn't change the TOTAL amount of gold you can earn, but it still makes it so you can get most of that gold faster, so that's really nice as well! (And you feel less bad when your almost lvl up, but won't reach the reward because the pass ends) Also this 20% decrease in needed exp can get people some free rewards so that's nice. I'm saying "nice" a lot in this, but that's because these changes to the battle pass are... nice.
BUT it still doesn't solve the problems that the game gets more and more expansive. And the Dust system is still a giant joke. Don't get me wrong i love HS and i like these changes their almost all for the betterment of the players.. But i still wouldn't recommend the game to my friends, HS is still way too p2havefun. These changes MIGHT put a bandaid on the situation for now, but once they reveal more information about the mini set, the uproar will start/continue again... Also they never mentioned or hinted at balance changes, but i'm still hopeful that the HS Team will nerf some cards before they go on their normal Christmas break.
Well we're unquestionably getting way more gold than before now. No one can debate that after the XP requirement being reduced by 20%. And 500 gold and 5 packs is a nice gesture. And we'll still get stuff from events but just gold and packs I guess. It's quite a lot from Blizzard when you consider how little these companies make changes just to be more generous. Hearthstone is still a whale's game that cost way too much for a whole collection or even just to preorder the mega bundle three times a year, but this is a very generous move from Blizzard.
Of course the Reddit hordes will find only fault with it and continue their endless tide of shitposts. Look people...Blizzard's not going to make their game cheaper. It's just not happening. They like money too much. Be happy that the rewards track changed and the game IS actually slightly cheaper now as a result. That's all your getting. If that's not enough then accept the fact that you'll always be raging about the cost of Hearthstone until you finally just give it up. So just give it up or relax and enjoy it.
So Tavern Brawl wasn’t actually bugged, but completely intentional? Ok. That just seems like such a dumb move considering it takes up a whole button on the main menu.
I’ll wait and see how these changes actually affect the Battlepass before passing judgment, I have no idea how changing the post level 50 rewards will work or how much easier it is to get to level 50.
... it's exactly 20% easier to get to level 50.
Bliz makes a slight change and people are kissing their feet again. I'll wait it out and see how it goes. but making the levels 20% better sounds like an executive move
"They make the system originally, some exec says "Looks good but make the xp 50% grindier to get" They do it, people complain, the team shows the exec they say "Ehh, make it 20% better, they'll stop""
What do you want? A revolution? Packs to cost half as much? Stop dreaming and be happy that you're now getting way more gold than before. Blizzard isn't going to change.
They certainly did some change here. And in no way can we discount the pressure mounted by the community was the reason why the change even happened in the first place.
For now, I think blizz has done enough to deserve a break. But let's not then go and slag off those who participated in the hate, because let's be honest; changes like these don't come because corporate just went through a lecture with Jiminy Cricket, its a response against community displeasure.
There's nothing entitled about consumers asking for more, no more can it be called entitled for corporate to stick their feet deeper in their greed.
This is true when they are paying consumers. People who don't pay for anything but still ask for demand more are the very definition of entitled.
Don't get me wrong -- I completely agree that Hearthstone is way too expensive. But the rewards track is not the place to fix that. If people would quit losing their shit over this trivial nonsense and instead complain about the loot-box foundations of the Hearthstone business model, maybe some actual meaningful change could have occurred.
But no, people fell for the reward track scapegoat ploy, and now Blizzard gets to keep its greedy random-pack system while still appeasing the free players (who never mattered to Blizzard in the first place).
"There's nothing entitled about consumers asking for more" - you're right. But the people asking for more were not and are not "consumers" - they're free-to-play cheapskates coasting on being subsidized by paid players. People who already pay nothing to enjoy the game asking for more is the very definition of "entitled."
I think they should do something about gaining amounts of gold that are not strictly multiple of 50. I actually have 95g, and if I don't play arena (and I don't like to) I can't get to a round amount of gold, making the remaining 45g totally useless. It feels like I have some currency, but cannot spend it. Feels bad.
Same dude. I've been so annnoyed at that since the start of the expansion. Feels like I'm missing out on something
You could play Heroic Duels to round it out. Same awards as Arena.
True, didn't consider that. But I think I dislike Duels even more then arena. I hate how, even in a mode like this, people can't avoid netdecking. I abandoned casual Duels mode after few runs because of this, and I can pretty safely assume that the competitive Duels mode is way worse from this point of view.
This also drives me crazy! You can't spend 5 gold, so why not just round up (or even down) those rewards. It's such a small thing that really doesn't matter, but for reason I hate it! I would actually play more arena/heroic duels if not for this
I was hoping they’d bring back the 100 daily gold for wins, but make it 5g/win.
