Seeking Off-Meta Hunters! (for standard)

Submitted 4 years ago by

I haven't played as much the last few months and just wanted to hear what off-meta Hunter builds folks have been having (moderate) success with this expansion.

Things I've been exploring so far:

  • Various types of Quest Hunter which still seems viable
  • Have had moderate success with a taunt heavy Control deck centered around N'zoth + Jewel of N'Zoth
  • Failed miserably at getting Spell Hunter off the ground featuring Jepetto Joybuzz + Malygos, Yogg, and C'thun...both a highlander version and a more robust duplicate deck
  • Also haven't had much success getting a Maxima Blastenheimer + Darkmoon Tonk deck to work with any consistency
  • Oh, and I've tried out the decks from Mark McKz on this site and they were fun combos to try to pull off :)

Has anyone had success with these archetypes or anything else off-meta like Highlander Beast Hunter, Corrupt (Y'shaaraj) Hunter, Dragon Hunter, etc.?  Thanks in advance!

This is what i was playing in standard at the beginning of the expansion.

Relies a lot on luck and the wild version is much better. I mainly play wild now so i never bothered making the standard version better. But the one below i am still working with.

    Living like that.

    Greetings, traveller!

I can tell you that Deathrattle Hunter has become viable in Standard and Wild. While it's certainly not top tier, the combination of Secrets and Deathrattles has finally come to fruition. Cards like Maxima Blastenheimer, Oblivitron and Flark's Boom-Zooka have found a home and the archetype is super fun AND competetive.

I've been playing mainly Wild these days, where Sylvanas Windrunner is mvp against Big Priests and Warlocks. I can provide a list tonight if you're interested. It's quite close to the one of clawz161, but also features Sneed's Old Shredder (fun card, might try out Oblivitron with Tonks instead of it), Barnes and Master's Call to avoid Barnes and Maxima hitting each other. I've also cut Deathstalker Rexxar in favor of Flark's Boom-Zooka which is crazy good in this deck.

    gl&hf!

I notice I am confused. Something I believe isn't true. How do I know what I think I know?

I know you asked for standard specifically, but considering that format's completely plagued with shamans this deck in wild has been seeing quite some success and will probably be up your alley. Basically a big/deathrattle hunter that's clearly legend-viable.

Oh wow, thanks a lot everyone!!

Really happy to hear folks have gotten Maxima and DR to work decently in standard (extra props for the Deathwing inclusion as i love that card!). And I actually have a solid Wild collection for Hunter (minus ze ol' Shredder) so I'll definitely gives those a go too!

Thanks again guys, and it's great to see some familiar faces on OOC :)

Then you should check out dane's maxima hunter it sounds very similar to what you're looking to do

But it runs Petting Zoo and i REALLY don't like the card, you don't get to Zul'jin often but when you do your board is usually full of 3/3s from petting zoo instead of from jewel of n'zoth which you would prefer anyway.

    Living like that.

That's true, Petting Zoo is super bad in this deck. I'm actually running some kind of hybrid between RenoJackson's list and the one of dane.

Here's the list im using, by the way. I'm at Diamon 4 right now, not expecting to get much further. The list feels good to me, the only thing that I might try is swapping a Quick Shot for a second Play Dead

Just wanted to say thank you for adding a guide!  I tried out the Wild decks listed here for a number of games and got demoralized pretty fast as I couldn't survive until the fun part against aggro (Odd Paladin brought back nightmares) and was getting out-Controlled by various Priest decks. But I'm gonna give it another go now that I learned a little more about the meta and have a better mulligan strategy in mind!

However, I've pulled off the Maxima into Darkmoon Tonk into 2x Nine Lives combo in Standard multiple times starting with Clawz's list as the base and it feels darn good when the plan comes together :D

Thanks again for the suggestions and the guide!
