Too short timer!

Submitted 3 years, 3 months ago by

The last patch has just exacerbated what I think was the biggest annoyance with battlegrounds: the timer is too short! It really limits the plays you're able to make during your turn. The latest patch introduces prizes that you have to pick from, leaving you with even less time to make your play.

I say the minimum time for the recruitment phase in Battlegrounds should be extended by 5 or 10 seconds. What do you think?

    I personaly do not agree!

I think the timer is most of the time way to long :)

Talked with my friends a lot about the timer in battlegrounds and most of them including me think it is way too long. Most of the time we have to wait around for 30 seconds because our turn is already finished.

So my personal opinion is that the timer is to long and therefore should not be extended by extra 5 or 10 seconds.

I think this would be a very good idea for the prize turns (i.e. turn 4, 8, 12, 16, ...) specifically. In a game today I picked the turn 16 prize that gives you a prize from all of the previous prize turns and once I was done picking and playing those I had less than 20 seconds left to play out the rest of my turn.

If a longer turn timer would be applied to all turns it could become very tedious since sometimes all you do in a turn is tier up and buy a minion.

Prize turns would be better if given at least 5 more seconds. Feels rushed.

It's funny... I've never had much of a problem of multitasking many things and getting that last minion on the board until now. I find myself cursing when I try to slap it on and Bob says no no no XD

There's also something I really hate: most of the time when Bob says one phrase, like "i'm sure you can win this thing", i actually lose the battle.

Was that quote specifically made for low win chances? I'm so sick of it that I dread playing another BG.

Yeah Idk what's up with that but I guess Bob is just always optimistic. Even when you're in last place and close to dying he often says "You're doing great out there!". No Bob, I'm not and I'm afraid your overly optimistic statements aren't helping.

Yeah, it's crazy. One time I was playing with a friend and Bob said he thinks I can win it all... BUT he said the same thing to my friend playing across the room!! Like, what the hell is that all about????

The most accurate quote from Bob is "let's see if you can stay on top". The odds seem to favor winning most of the time.

On topic: i think the timer for the first few turns should be decreased by like 10-15seconds. And increased by 10 seconds on the treasure turns.

Actually, I would do this very differently: with a "ready" button and an increased overall turn timer (like 5 seconds starting on turn 4-5). This way games can go faster instead of waiting for stuff when no one is doing anything.

The "ready" button could even be pressed automatically when the player doesn't have anything else to do. But i guess the issue comes up with the tavern freeze mechanic.

I think that the main issue is the different turn times for each player, like let's say: It's turn 12, there's 5 ghosts, player X has levelled to tier 6 and it's against a ghost that conceded before the game started, he can't buy minions this turn, players Y and Z are against each other, they also level to 6.

Next turn starts: Player X has almost 100 seconds in his turn because the game finished in microseconds.

Players Y and Z have less than a minute to spend their turn.

Why is that? Well, because the combat phase is automatic in the simulation, but not automatic for the players watching it, hindering long deathrattle builds, and taking too much time for large board of undying minions.

The real solution would be a time equalization, like it or not, if the turns would start all at the same time, even for the guy who won without doing anything, that would mean downtime without being able to do anything at all, just staring at his screen, maybe looking at a timer till next turn?

The thing is, if you want a longer turn, you can always use the disconnect "cheat", which uses firewall outgoing traffic as a way to disconnect HS and reconnect it immediately, but you can't really see the opponent warband, so, there's that.

TL;DR: Thanks to simulated play and RANDOM, you can get a really long turn or a really short one, no way in avoiding it, outside of "cheating".

Yeah, you can swap between desktop and mobile HS app right after the combat starts to force it resolve immediately and buy yourself a few (dozen) seconds in your tavern phase. The match is decided the second it starts, so watching it resolve is just watching the motions, nothing that happen after is random, it has already been predetermined. You can easily tell this by seeing an achievement fire right when the combat starts, meaning the game already know if you've lost/won.

I've found myself very annoyed by the shuffle animation, but the prize turn animation hasn't been such a nuisance for me yet.

I can't count the times I've lost because of my turn timer since the patch. Just now, i lost the final match, with a 160/154 golden Whirling Cyclone in hand, and the message "too late, your turn is over" on my screen.

I've also lost several games due to running out of time and having an important minion left in my hand, or positioning horribly. But at the same time, there are turns where you level and buy the perfect minion and you have 60 seconds left... So I simply blame myself for not being fast enough (and I'm not trying to do anything near the stuff that Dog does with Khadgar shenanigans!) and try to adopt a 90%-approach: sometimes making a suboptimal optimal decision in turns where I feel time is short to buy myself some seconds, so at least I can finish my turn.

It definitely depends on what minion composition you're running. If you're trying to run khadgar tokens or pirates, you almost need to restart the game to be able to get all your actions in. If you have 3 hoggers (1 gold + 1 normal), then your composition's power level cap is the time.

I think being able to turn down/accelerate animations would be a good middle ground. Time itself seems OK but waiting for animations to finish is what makes the timer feel short

Also to echo @Fedrion, they should do something to address the 'game restart' mechanic to gain a few extra seconds. It feels odd that it's a common thing to do

This would be a real good solution, right now the main issue I see is battle animations specifically proc buffs, ie.: Pirates buffing, scaling demon buffing, taunt guy buffing.

I mean, if you go against a taunt build (which is rare, but they exist) the scaling when taunts attacked guy can slow down the simulation for as long as making you start the "recruit" phase at 20 secs (happened to me against Bigfernal and 2 Voidlords spawning the 3 1/3 demons, and add to that the Soul Juggler procs)...

So to summarize, animations in the simulation should be reduced to almost non existant.

Had plenty of experiences that i hardly had any time left on prize turns, because i got good prices and couldn't decide which one to pick. Even lost games because of that some times. I feel like all the price turns should get an additional 5-10 seconds of time, so you can both pick the price and still have enough time to actually play out your turn. Also at the start of each turn you have to wait until the prize "shuffle" thing dissapears, which means you pretty much lose about 5 seconds each non-price turn guaranteed... Why don't they just remove that animation, and instead just add that card without an animation playing?

Well either that or they should speed up animations in general. There are plenty of battlecry minions that take FOREVER to trigger, and i personally dislike that you need to wait until the battlecry animations finishes before you can even sell the minion. These things are also why it's so ANNOYING to play battlegrounds on mobile.

Speaking about MOBILE, The animations take so LONG on mobile, like it feels like it takes DOUBLE the time before the animation finishes! And OFTEN the rope/timer shows that you have about 10 seconds left and then instantly goes into 0 seconds left and throws you into battle. It's so annoying when you think you got some time left but actually do not, i and some friends of mine have lost MANY games because if this.

I just hope they fix these things like these and make battlegrounds more enjoyable to play, because i'm really tired of having to restart HS after every battlegrounds game and running out of time while it looks like i still have plenty of time left.

RNG is only fun as long as there is a 50/50 chance of getting something really good or trash level of bad. If RNG always results in something good, then it's not fun.
