It’s been confirmed that our old buddy Edwin VanCleef has finally spent his luck running from the axe of nerfs and rotations. As a card that’s been a part of the evergreen Rogue set since the beginning, Edwin has a constant familiar face whose place in the classic set will need to be filled by another character. This is similar to what happened at the start of the Year of the Phoenix with the revamp of the classic priest set, where Natalie Seline became the first class legendary to be introduced to Classic after she replaced Prophet Velen as he rotated to the Hall of Fame.
Now it appears that Rogue may face a similar situation as its Classic mascot changes, assuming there isn't some larger change in the works that supprises us all, so let’s look into Warcraft lore and see what possibilities we could end up with as VanCleef’s replacement. For more information on the Edwin move, see our post here to see what we know so far.
Vanessa VanCleef
Let’s start with the most obvious choice to succeed Edwin - his own daughter. Vanessa VanCleef took up command of the Defias Brotherhood after Edwin’s death. After her father was killed right in front of her by adventurers in the Deadmines, Vanessa was adopted by a couple in Westfall who named her Hope, unaware of her origins. Taking advantage of this new identity as she grew up, Vanessa betrayed her adopted parents and had them killed to keep her secret. Rebuilding her father’s old criminal underworld army, she planned to lead an insurrection against Stormwind and its king, Varian Wrynn. She was confronted in the same Deadmines as her father but faked her death to escape, showing up years later to exact her vengeance, but instead becoming a member of a secret organization of rogues known as the Uncrowned.
Lord Jorach Ravenholdt
Here’s a guy that most World of Warcraft players probably haven’t even heard of, but he’s one of the top rogues in the lore. Leader of the Ravenholdt assassin organization at Ravenholdt Manor in the Alterac Mountains, Jorach also served as the leader of the Uncrowned secret society. For decades, he has acted as a teacher and trainer for other skilled rogues. What better choice to serve as a rogue figurehead than a master teacher of the art?
Garona Halforcen
A character who’s been around since the very beginning of the Warcraft story, Garona is a master rogue and assassin who was the original wielder of Kingsbane. Mind-controlled by Gul'dan and Cho'gall, and forced to use those daggers to kill her friend King Llane Wrynn, Garona befriended Khadgar and broke free of her masters, dedicating her life to hunting them down afterward. A truly legendary character who deserves a card if there ever was one.
At one point, Medivh befriended Garona and she stayed for a time in Karazhan. It was there she met Khadgar, who would later free her from the magic bonds on her mind.
Mathias Shaw
With SI:7 Infiltrator and SI:7 Agent already a part of the core classic set, it would be fitting to add in the leader of SI:7 himself, Mathias Shaw. SI:7 is basically the Stormwind Secret Service and consists of stealthy agents who work on Stormwind’s behalf legally, and is a cool spin on the normally-illegal and shady nature of the rogue fantasy.
Stab 'em good, Shaw!
Flynn Fairwind
How about a bit of genuine pirate in your rogue? Well, former pirate at least. While he used to be a captain of his own pirate crew, Flynn was overthrown in a mutiny led by his first mate. Eventually, he ended up working for the Harbormaster of Kul Tiras, Cyrus Crestfall, using his underworld connections to help save his homeland from collapsing under corruption and attacks from both inside and out. This led to him aiding the Alliance during the Fourth War against the Horde. A real charmer of a rogue, this is one pirate who maxed out his charisma score.
Taoshi or Taran Zhu
These two stealthy panda bears are the two highest-ranking members of the Shado-Pan, a group of ninja-like Pandaren who used stealth and martial arts to protect their land. We’ve already seen Shado-Pan used to represent the rouge class with Tenwu of the Red Smoke and Shado-Pan Rider, so it’s not too crazy to think that one of them could serve as a new legendary card, especially if they wanted to put a new spin on the flavor.
These are just a few of the possibilities for a replacement rogue legendary. Which one do you think is the most likely? Which one would you like to see most, or is there another character you think would be better? Do you think that perhaps there won’t even be a replacement like we expect with the new changes? Sound off in the comments.

I think the concept of replacing him in the Classic set may not even make sense. They say he's rotating out, but also that the Hall of Fame will no longer exist. To me, that implies that we're finally getting a "core set" implementation, and that Classic will no longer exist as one monolithic evergreen headache. Some Classic cards will go out, and eventually some will come back in, probably along with other cards from old expansions.
So yeah, this was a good excuse for a "Rogues Gallery" lore piece, but I'm pretty sure the question isn't even relevant.
Also, it's Mathias Shaw, OF COURSE.
I would like to see them deviate from the Defias Brotherhood. This was Classic, and what I played in WoW, and is a great bit of nostalgia. However, since Blizzard is revamping the class a bit, having it be someone not associated with Edwin VanCleef or the Defias whatsoever would be more appropriate.
Doing this shows that they aren't just taking away a power card, but they are "adjusting the class identity" like they did with Priest. When they HoF'd Prophet Velen, they didn't put in a card that acted like him... they went in a different direction. It is for that reason, I'd like to see either Garona or members of the Shado-Pan. It's unfortunate that they put Infiltrator Lilian into an expansion because that card alone has Rogue identity written all over it.
... but that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
Only Natural that it be Vanessa, I mean she replaced Edwin in WoW, why not Hearthstone.
I don’t think Blizzard will agree, but I’d say that we don’t need a new card to replace this one. Rogue has lots of great core cards already, and that’s why it’s so consistently strong. My build of Miracle Rogue is over 1/3 Classic and Basic cards. (Edwin and 2 copies each of 5 other Rogue cards. Plus Questing Adventurer, but he’s neutral.) That’s a lot of power in the Rogue toolset, and they’d almost have to make the new Legendary weak. Why bother
I don't want it to be anyone that I'd actually like to see in the game as Blizzard will no doubt release a useless card like the others they have replaced.
Garona is my favorite character here (followed by Taran Zhu) but Vanessa and Mathias are definitely much more fitting than her. I'd be OK with any of those three.
If it wasn't for Vanessa's familial ties to Edwin I would say Garona is just as fitting as anyone else. The classic legendaries were often closely associated with the basic hero (Cenarius + Malfurion, Velen + Anduin, Antonidas + Jaina, Gromm + Garrosh, Tirion + Uther), and I'm pretty sure Valeera did more with Garona than any of the other likely options. At least in documented events; there's no doubt she has worked with Mathias quite a bit off-screen since they are both based in Stormwind and BfA showed them talking like long-time friends.
Taran Zhu seems particularly unlikely since he's a monk, not a rogue. Now they are willing to add classes to the game, my guess is they will keep him back for the basic monk hero. Him or Chen Stormstout anyway. I would say they are both conspicuously absent from the game, but so is the whole of Pandaria so that's not saying much.
I´d vote for Vanessa VanCleef, but knowing Blizz, it would be someone completely different. I hope I´m wrong tho.
I say Vanessa VanCleef. Going by that piece of backstory I think it would be cool for her to replace him in the game. My second choice would be Garona but they could add her anytime.
Exactly. And I hope so.
Garona seems the obvious choice here
Garona is the OG assassin.
Uh not realy, Not over Vanessa. She is Edwins Daughter the is by far the most obvious/most fitting replacement as 'successor" of edwin
Heck Succeeding Edwin is her Role in WoW Basicly, She reforms and becomes elader of the Defias Brotherhood.
of course but it just seemed to basic to replace a van cleef by another. why not change gears?
Basic sure, but it is the most obvious/fitting as replacing Edwin. and Vanessa is quite different from he dad despite sharing name.
She is far more about toxins and deception(like faking her own death) then more raw fighting sskill/strength of Edwin.
But to change gears id like Lilian Voss and would prefer Vanessa as portait(even got a van cleef cardback they could bring back if she becomes portait)
Only problem with that is that we already have two versions of Lilian Voss, one from Frozen throne and a living version from Scholomance. I don't think they're going to make a third to put in classic, assuming they're even keeping classic.
While true, we still have mltiple otehr versions of different characters as cards more then lilians 2. and they could give her a title /bit different look to more match current time Lilian in WoW who is kinda the Forsaken Ruler atm.
Could be something lik LIlian the Forsaken. Or could use her ghost/soul from her fight in revamped scholomance.
As someone who played WoW only casually, and not since Pandaria, these little lore back stories are very cool! Love it!
Same here! Thanks for creating these nice bits of lore :)
My pleasure, glad you enjoy them :)
