All the initial Mercenary choices already revealed?
So they have advertised "over 50" initially available Mercenaries ... well, guess what? They already revealed 52 on the reveal stream this morning.
You've got the ten "Mercenaries" of the Year of the Gryphon ...
The ten "original" heroes of Hearthstone classes ...
Gromm, Ragnaros, Jaraxxus, Samuro, Voone, Blink Fox, Antonidas, Cairne, Sylvanas, Diablo, daddy Roame, Gruul, Mukla, Mannoroth, Mutanus, Arthas/The Lich King, Tirion, Varian, Krush, Tyrande, Millhouse, Geddon, Murk-Eye, Rathorian, Saurfang, Alexstrasza, Brightwing, Anacondra, Morgl, Velen, Natalie Seline, Shadow Hunter Vol'jin.
That's 52. All confirmed in the stream.
Interesting that Rathorian made it; he's the only one I (as a non-WoW-player) am completely unfamiliar with from War2, War3, and HS.

Blink Fox is a weird inclusion; it's the only one without a formal name. You've got these major heroes, villains, and monsters, and then you've got...a blink fox lol
Rathorian is another weird one, as you noted, although that's less because of what he is - a unique mob in WoW - and more that he has no stake in Hearthstone. There's honestly nothing super special about King Krush, Murk-Eye, or Mukla, either, but we happen to know of them because of HS.
Edit: Medivh, ETC, and Lorewalker Cho are in the reveal trailer, but were not shown in the gameplay stream. Perhaps there are more yet to be discovered.

And so is 862, but I don't think they'd say "more than 50" in that case.
My point is that there's still room for a surprise reveal of an extra-special card or two closer to launch ... if they choose to play it that way.
More than 50 almost always means 51, or at least between 50-60, it's an advertising thing, they try to make it seems bigger than it is. If it were more than 60, they would have said more than 60...
So we can at least say the number is between 50 and 60, unless this is a rare case where they don't want to over promise so they're advertising a number they're guaranteeing

Weird that Medivh, ETC, and Lorewalker Cho are in the reveal trailer, but not in the game itself *shrugs* Got to save something for later, I guess.
There are a lot of characters in that trailer that aren't showing up yet. Nemsy Necrofizzle, Sally Whitemane, and Maiev Shadowsong are all given silhouettes in the glowing boxes part of the trailer, and Captain Eudora shows up in the art at the end of the trailer. They've got to save something for the expansions to the mode.
There are 21 more Mercs (7 per role) to be added probably at a later date.
Protectors: Baine Bloodhoof, Cho'Gall, Dame Hazelbark, Lorewalker Cho, Mankrik, The Black Knight and Trigore the Lasher.
Fighters: Aranna Starseeker, Draka, E.T.C., Eudora, Garona, Maiev Shadowsong and Serena Bloodfeather.
Casters: Death Speaker Blackthorn, High Inquisitor Whitemane, Kazakus the Golem Shaper, Magatha Grimtotem, Medivh, Neeru Fireblade and Nemsy.
It's surely not limited to the cameos in the trailer. I'm sure any character in the WoW/Hearthstone universe is fair game for expansions.
