Thank you to OutOfCards for posting the full details about all the units available. The more I learn about this mode, the more it seems like my jam -- I adore PVE content, especially when I'm able to construct my deck as I want (I spend a good amount of time testing out decks against the Innkeeper because it's stress-free).
In a sense, this is like the best parts of Adventures/Dungeon Runs and Duels all mixed into one. The only downside is the PVP element; hopefully it won't be an essential part of this game.
PvP appears to be for those who want it, although there will also be rewards for playing (first wins of the day, perhaps, and end-of-Season stuff). You can still earn rewards by just playing PvE bounties, though, so I wouldn't deem it "essential".
I was EXTREMELY dissapointed with the game mode. They offered Roguelike and made a Gacha without ANY Rogue-esque mechanic. This is a full Gacha that needs close to 2000+ packs to be completed and they offer 2 measly packs? even if it was 20 most Gachas offer close to 50+ "packs" in currency and summons and whatever to start. 2 is spitting in the face of the playerbase.
+1 to FortyDust here. From what we've seen so far, the game is very reminiscent of card-based Roguelike games, and this article from Hearthstone Top Decks does a pretty good job walking through what we know about packs and drop rates, concluding that you'd have a full collection by ~310 packs (potentially fewer depending on what the crafting economy looks like).
Two is certainly not a particularly impressive number of packs, but it's free and clearly just there to incentivize you to try out the game mode. I'd reserve any "extreme disappointment" until after the game actually launches.
To go along with what FortyDust said, you get 8 of the 52 Mercs for free just from playing the tutorial, so you're already given a decent starting point beyond what a traditional "gacha" tends to give.
Attributes of a roguelike game:
To say Mercenaries is without ANY Roguelike mechanics is just plain ridiculous.
Also, I don't know where you are getting the 2,000 packs figure. To collect all of the Mercenaries, you need less than 300 packs. To fully level them up and upgrade them, you have to actually play the game -- Merc XP cannot be found in packs. And in the course of playing the game, you'll get plenty of coins, which will both upgrade the Mercs you have and unlock new ones without needing to buy packs, so this is FAR from a "full gacha."
It seems every part of your comment is grossly misinformed.
If this is legendary quest I think it will be the first one that I'll dismiss. Completely uninterested in this game mode. Even if it was f2p friendly like bgs it still looks bland. And the way they monetized it isn't helping in any way
Yep same.
But lots of people will be interested and if it's your thing then great.
For those of us that aren't - glad we can reroll special quests these days rather than it sit there for months.
