What is Colossal in Hearthstone?
Hearthstone has many card effects that are common enough that they get their own keyword - a word or two that immediately tells you how the card works. Let's take a look at the Colossal keyword.
Enters the battlefield with +X tokens.
Colossal is a mechanic found on minions in which they enter the battlefield with +X tokens found that synergize with the base card. Unlike other mechanics that happen when minions enter the battlefield, Colossal will take effect even if the card wasn't "played" from your hand. Colossal was added in Voyage to the Sunken City.
Keywords that Work Great with Colossal
Colossal minions will summon additional tokens that will synergize with the original minion, and since you'd ideally want both of these cards to stay alive to synergize with each other, minions with Taunt will do a bigger service in protecting all the integral pieces and therefore you may want some on the board when you play a Colossal minion to keep all the pieces safer as they all work stronger when they are together.
Giving the tokens some form of immunity if possible can also help make the base card stronger.
Playing Against Colossal in Hearthstone
What all Colossal minions share in common is generating extra pieces on the board. Any type of board clearing effect will be useful as it can get rid of the both the token(s) and the base card all at once or at the very least, it will weaken them quite a bit. If your opponent is playing a Colossal minion and suspects you to be holding a board clear, they may try to bait it out of you first before playing their Colossal minion.
Do remember that the extra tokens will be summoned even if the minion isn't played from hand, so attempting to cheat the minion out for your opponent will not be wise.
Example Colossal Cards in Hearthstone
Colaque is a Legendary Druid minion that summons a 0/8 Taunt minion that renders Colaque Immune while it's on the board. The Immunity on Colaque isn't as significant as it may seem at first since minions would need to attack the 0/8 Taunt anyway before getting to Colaque, but it will still protect Colaque from damage and targeted destruction effects while active.
Xhilag of the Abyss is a Legendary Demon Hunter minion that summons four copies of Xhilag's Stalk, each of which are 1/2 minions that deal damage to a random enemy at the end of the turn. Its base damage starts at 1, but this will increase by 1 each turn Xhilag itself stays on the board, and therefore you want to try to use Taunt minions to protect it.

What if there's no space for the tokens? They simply vanish, I guess?
How cool would it be if the tokens simply crush existing minions to make space? That would fit flavor-wise, and could be useful for triggering deathrattles
I am impressed by this mechanic. Team 5 still has their creative juices flowing and continues to innovate. Makes me very hopeful for Hearthstone's future.
So if the tokens arrive even when not played from hand, does that include if a minion is transformed (via Arcane Missiles or similar) into a Colossal minion?
I guess this question is really: do they appear immediately?
It would summon as soon as it apears, because Colossal is basically “This minion is summoned with X tokens.”
The question as I see it is will all these be in the transformation pool, or will the remove them. It’s mostly a concern in Wild, where the chance of it happening will be super rare due to the large minion pool. And past examples of things you couldn’t evolve or get transformed into were really just The Darkness and the big 12/12 who is dormant until some 1/3s die… forget his name. So likely they will stay. But still, I’m curious to see.
Cool mechanic, I've done a custom card back in a day which basically equated to that. I'm sure many ppl did too.
It is extremely relevant because a lot of decks would have no reason to clear a 0/8 Taunt, especially when its Deathrattle grants armor. Dealing 5 direct damage to a minion is extremely easy for most classes, but killing both of them in one turn is much tougher. If you can kill only one, the actual threat is the one that survives.
I reckon there's gonna be some tech cards that increase Colossal X token.
