    Competition Theme: One Man's Treasure

For this competition, we'd like you to create a treasure card for any of the rogue-like single-player modes (Dungeon Run, Monster Hunt, Rumble Run, Dalaran Heist or Tombs of Terror).

    • Your treasure can be a playable card or a Passive upgrade
      • You may make a Shrine for Rumble Run
    • Most treasures are completely neutral and can be obtained by any class, however:
      • You may make a class-specific treasure for Rumble Run
      • You may make a class-specific treasure for Tombs of Terror
      • You may make a character-specific treasure for Monster Hunt
    • You must use an appropriate watermark for your card
      • Kobolds and Catacombs, Witchwood, Rastakhan's Rumble, Rise of Shadows and Saviours of Uldum are allowed, to make that more explicit

Welcome, welcome everyone to another WCDC. This one directly follows on from our last one - we celebrated the cards we got, and now we're celebrating the single-player content.

As before, let us know if you experience any issues via Discord or PMing me here on the site.

    Competition Phases

Here are the phases of this card design competition

    • Submission Phase: Starts on Mon, Feb 24 17:00 EST (GMT -0500). Runs until Sat, Feb 29 17:00 EST (GMT -0500)
    • Voting Phase: Starts on Sat, Feb 29 17:00 EST (GMT -0500). Runs until Sun, Mar 1 16:00 EST (GMT -0500)
    • Finalist Phase: Starts on Sun, Mar 1 17:00 EST (GMT -0500). Runs until Mon, Mar 2 17:00 EST (GMT -0500)
    • Winner Selected: After finalist voting concludes and we validate votes.

Yeah, as much as it's one of my favourite cards ever printed, I'm glad it's going to Wild before even I tire of it. A fun effect, but not one you want hanging about in Standard for all time!

Hi everyone, just giving a quick update on the competition.

We've had a good number of entries so far, which is great to see. I'm loving what I'm seeing from some of these entries, and personally I'm really enjoying the new voting system - a lot of entries I wouldn't have upvoted before are getting 3s or even 4s from me, which feels far more fair to them.

We've also had a few people (I won't name any names) who submitted entries with only an image of the art they would have used for their card, instead of an image of the card itself. I totally get why they made that mistake - I did the same myself during testing - and since it's the first run of the new system, I've offered to change their entries for them if they provide me with a card image. So don't be surprised if you check your votes and see some cards in place of art pieces sometime later in the week!

Overall, glad you're all enjoying the new system! We've already talked a bunch about where we'd like to go with improvements. No ETA on anything, but ideas have been floated.

For some reason quoting your post Xarkkal isn't working, I'll need to get that looked into.

Anyway, currently the system for tokens involves submitting an additional card, which you would submit as a token. Obviously this isn't ideal, as for example this current competition only lets you submit one card.

In the short term, I'll make sure we include space for an additional token card to be submitted (when tokens are allowed by a theme). In the long term, we'll look at coming up with a better system for including tokens - Hero Cards, for example, are particularly obnoxious to submit right now.

Competition Theme: How To Train Year Dragon

For this first competition, we'd like to see you create a card which utilises one of the keywords or mechanics introduced in the Year of the Dragon.

The full list of available keywords and mechanics is:

Welcome back everyone! Man, it's good to see competitions return.

To celebrate coming back after so long away, we want to see cards all about what we went through in that time - the Year of the Dragon.

We've tested our new system quite a bit, but if you experience any issues with it, don't hesitate to get in touch with us on Discord, or by directly messaging me here on the site. We'd be foolish to think we'll get through it without a few bumps in the road, though hopefully we navigated through most of them over the weekend.

    Competition Phases

Here are the phases of this card design competition

    How To Enter

Once you've decided upon your design, it's time to enter! You can find the main competition page by clicking the banner above.

There, you'll find a section entitled 'Submit Entry'. This will take you to a form to fill out with the details of your card, along with a place to upload an image of it - use Hearthcards to create a great looking image!

Make sure you check your entry over, because once you've submitted you won't be able to change it.

I mean, this system sounds great for the players... and thus terrible for the developers. I can't think why they'd ever implement it.

At a quick glance at this system, F2P players will find it far too easy to collect close to a full collection of cards. What incentive do they have to spend any money on card packs at all? I know that I would never pre-order again, because I'd be wasting money - those extra 80 packs or whatever would just increase my dust count in the long run, because I'd have such a surplus of packs from other sources. Pre-ordering would basically be only for the Hero portrait.

Now, obviously this is fantastic for me as a player, but I don't see the reasoning for any of this being adopted by the developers. It's all downside. The only thing I can see them maybe taking is the idea of a much smaller additional pre-order option, with enough packs for the Battlegrounds incentives; that's something that makes them more money.

I think asking for more and more packs is the wrong way to fix the economy of the game. Packs need to give better rewards. As it stands, you could open all these new packs and still be missing a bunch of Epics that you have to craft, because they refuse to give Epics any sort of protection.

I don't get why you put both Penance and Holy Fire into the same set? They are both identical in term of effect and function.

    Redundancy of effects =P

Penance also only hits minions, but is still a far better card than Holy Fire. Having both cards in a Core Set is good to teach players about how damage scales, as well as what makes one better than the other.

I don't think Meeting of Minds is too complicated. My comparison point is always the most complicated Basic card - Animal Companion. A new player has no way of knowing what an Animal Companion is or how many of them there are before playing the card - conversely, you always know the size of your opponent's hand, and I think seeing the full hand is much easier to grasp than seeing only part of it.

I wavered between Mass Hysteria and Lightbomb for a long time. I definitely don't think either card is too strong to include in Priest's Core Set - look at Brawl. Should Priest, whose identity I'm basing around board control, not have a comparably powerful board clear? I could absolutely see Lightbomb instead, but Mass Hysteria won out for being the cheaper card, and thus more directly comparable to both Brawl and Holy Nova.

I think Lifesteal should be in the Classic set. I'd also put Rush there too, and I could probably be persuaded on some of the weaker Discover cards like [Hearthstone Card (Jeweled Beetle) Not Found]. We've already seen Rogue get an additional Poisonous card - a Basic card, even - and if I were to redesign other classes I'd include those other keywords. Warsong Commander is begging for her old effect but with Rush instead of Charge.

I don't see Alonsus Faol as too out of place. Since your game plan is to win the board - at least with the Core Set - having a card which lets you trade favourably and then return to full Health, potentially multiple times, is game-ending. At least as much as something like Tirion Fordring. If Faol isn't removed quickly, you will win. That it doesn't kill the opponent immediately doesn't mean it isn't a huge swing in your favour if played right.

    Thanks for the in-depth thoughts!

    • I really don't see Battle Medic as an issue. Injured Tol'vir is better in almost every conceivable way, for example, save being dropped on Turn 2 with no Circle of Healing - and even then, Taunt is arguably better than the extra Health depending on your opponent. When cards like Divine Spirit/Inner Fire exist, sure I'd be more wary, but I dropped them for a reason.
    • Meeting of Minds deliberately looks at the whole hand, because I want that to be an option available to Priest. I think at (3) the card is pretty bad as is, so giving you that extra bit of scouting feels warranted.
    • Soul Survivor is deliberately a weaker Ancient of War. Basic vs Epic and Priest vs Druid was my logic for that. In an expansion I'd for sure push the power level on it, but a Basic set is something different.
    • I don't see Power Word: Barrier or Barrier Priest as an issue now that they can't hit your face. Compare the first to Conceal, which costs (5) less for losing the powerful interaction with Taunt minions; the second to Master of Disguise. Note that both of those cards also prevent targeted destruction or damage, while you can still use a variety of removal even with the Barrier in place.
    • This is very interesting, because I've had other people say Alonsus Faol was too weak! I must admit that I don't think it's an issue if Arena-fair gameplay finds this to be a 'bomb'. You can make it appear very infrequently, or ban it from Arena if you must, but I don't see that as a reason to kill it as a Constructed card.
    • Holy Guardian actually was a Rare, before I'd decided on including Mass Hysteria. I wanted to keep the rarities the same - to avoid any issues with dust compensation, were this to actually happen - so I just bumped it up a rarity. I could always swap it with Barrier Priest, I guess.

I really don't see an issue with Meeting of Minds at (3) - I'd push it to (4), but I'm convinced it'd be unplayable there. I suppose that isn't totally a bad thing for a Basic card, but I removed things like Radiance for being unplayable garbage, so I'd feel awkward introducing something just as bad.

Like, instead of taking a gamble and spending (3) to fish for something from your opponent's deck, why aren't you just playing a good card that synergises with your deck?

Thanks! It's interesting to see what cards people like and don't like - it really shows that Blizzard will have a hard time reworking Priest, if only because not everybody wants the same things from the class.

I must admit that Alonsus Faol was simply given Catrina Muerte's stats, since she was still on my mind. I could definitely see some tweaking as needed for him.

I like your idea for Battle Medic (and maybe Soul Survivor too). It'd mean giving them slightly better stats, but that's perfectly fine. It helps a lot with synergies and just a general 'class flavour' aspect. Battle Medic is really only a Vanilla 2/4 because I've been adamant about giving that to Priest for a long time - I can certainly see something like a Tauntless Injured Tol'vir as a Basic card.

Thoughtsteal and Shadow Madness I couldn't get rid of, if only because I wanted to keep as many different aspects of the Priest identity as possible, but I could definitely see a greater rework removing them, and those seem like solid choices for replacements.

I totally agree that I'm in the wrong by not knowing my personal information on the account and being unable to confirm by email. Also from their perspective: what do they gain by rejecting to help me recovering it (not just giving, but helping by letting me prove it by other means)?

On the other hand, from their perspective, what do they lose by not helping you?

The account is already blocked, so it's not like they're losing any money by not helping you. From their perspective, continuing to try and help you after you've failed security checks would essentially be wasting resourcing trying to help a potential scammer.

Unfortunately I don't see a way to get the account back if they've cut communication about it at this point. Without knowing the exact details of what you're missing to help unblock the account, the only suggestion I have is to see if you ever wrote down or saved somewhere the relevant account information.

This is actually the case with a lot of products - very rarely will people be interested in New Years themed things, but Chinese New Year is loved by a lot of Western audiences because of the attached myths and aesthetic.

MtG, for example, is releasing their 'Year of the Rat' Secret Lair product. Overwatch has always done a Lunar New Year event. Blizzard could be doing miserably in China and they'd still do this instead of 'New Year' stuff.

Very likely, especially with a name like 'Celeste' - it's very appropriate, and would follow on from Dame Hazelbark being part of a bundle (and I think The Thunder King was too, wasn't he?).

It might be hard-coded not to work with the Mastiffs, so there isn't an infinite loop.

But, in the absence of that, yes that is indeed pre-nerf Dreadsteed's effect.

I believe it might be a slight quirk of translation - I think they'll have the Water Elemental effect.

Perhaps it's meant to say "that Freeze", instead of "with Freeze".

It's been confirmed that the "good" classes are getting an extra three cards in the first wing. Considering the Reno hero is a mage card while the other two legendaries have been neutral, I imagine these three "bonus cards" for the good classes are going to be the hero cards, and the four legendaries they mentioned are all going to be neutral.

This isn't correct. You get an additional three bonus cards when you purchase the first wing, sure, but we know for a fact that The Amazing Reno isn't one of them - in the initial reveal we were told he was the reward for completing the 4th Explorers Chapter.

We also know that the cards aren't split into the wings by class in any obvious way - Paladin, for example, has Shotbot in the 4th EVIL Chapter.

Technically they could still not have been counting the Hero Cards in that Legendary count, I guess, but your reasoning for it doesn't track unfortunately.

In terms of Board Clears, couldn’t Priest also get Excavated Evil back? It doesn’t really fit into the themes you’re going for but it’s a cool card. Also, you could buff Holy Nova to 6 Mana “Deal 3 Damage to all enemy Characters and restore 3 Health to all friendly characters”. I feel this might be better than Mass Hysteria because I think that Holy Nova is a very thematically priest card (just horribly underpowered)

Excavated Evil I ruled out for a similar reason as Psychic Scream - mechanically, the shuffling aspect of it felt weird to me to include in the Classic set.

I was trying to avoid buffing or nerfing cards as much as possible when doing this, because I understand that people like cards as they are in many cases and I didn't want to completely remove anything from the game. I'm not against buffing Holy Nova like that though. I didn't think it would fill the board clear slot of the class well, but perhaps in the new style of gameplay they'd more frequently be able to make favourable trades and clean up with it, while healing their own board back up. Something to think on.

    Quote From CursedParrot

What if Inner Fire was changed to “Give a minion ‘After this attacks, set its Attack equal to its Health’”? That way it would still be an Attack payoff card but it couldn’t be part of an OTK when you have a high health minion on the board. Alternatively, it could become “Destroy a minion. Summon a minion for its owner with Attack and Health equal to the chosen minion’s health” for a similar effect

I'm just not a fan of extreme Attack buffs like that in Priest. I don't mind incidental or small symmetrical ones like Power Word: Tentacles or Unidentified Elixir, but ones that can vastly pump the Attack stat I don't like.

Power Word: Barrier and Meeting of Minds are way too complicated for the Basic Set.

Do you mind expanding on why you think that? I don't think either of them are particularly difficult mechanics to understand.

Barrier is a simple AoE buff. Meeting of Minds is no more complex than something like Tracking - it'd give you more options, sure, but I don't see why that makes it that much more complex.

Animal Companion is a way more complex card than either of them, imo, with three tokens that you have no way of finding out about before playing the card (at least in-game).
