Duplicate protection here we go! Can't wait for this expansion to hit.
really not liking the fact that they completely abandoned gold questchains in favor of packs
I was about to comment how low getting 3 packs from new expansion is, but remember, because of that new duplicate protection, packs are now much more worth it. Especially first 25-50
So about the duplicate protection, if I open all of the commons, will it not give me any more commons until I have every other card? Because if not, then I don't see this system helping as much as people think. I don't think too many people have trouble getting all of the commons and rares in a set already. All the protection would do would make your collection a little bit better for the first few weeks of the expansion and also stop you from getting super unlucky with epics.
*edit* I was collecting some downvotes so I just want to clarify that I am not complaining or saying that this free stuff isn't enough and blizzard needs to give us more free stuff. But I am a bit concerned that this may not be quite enough to help players like me who don't spend money, but still play the game a lot, build up their collection. I can already collect all of the commons and rares without much difficulty, so the protection on those won't really help me get more cards, it will just help me get them faster. But in the long run it comes out the same. I understand that this update will have a lot more of an impact for people who don't play as much and so don't get as many packs because it will drastically reduce the number of packs you will need to get a full collection of commons/rares but I am just concerned that for the rest of us the protection will mostly only help with epics and I am concerned that this may not be enough.
I somewhat agree with you that it was not as much of an economy change as I expected but it still is a big boost. I was hoping that they would double the disenchanment value of just the common cards from 5 to 10. If they did that as well as no duplicates I would have been overjoyed. Also, consider the potential value of the no duplicate rule when they nerf cards. You will get the nerfed cards over and over again during the nerf period which has the potential to give you a huge amount of dust.
If all this does is help you to grab more epics, it's totally worth it. And for those players who don't buy too many packs, it will help them out a lot, I imagine.
I mean yeah it is all upsides and I am glad to not have to worry about opening a third epic. But this isn't the huge economy change I thought we would get. It is good, but I just don't think it is enough to make the game more accessible to F2P players.
If this change doesnt do it for ya, what are you looking for exactly? I open the mega bundle packs + whatever packs from gold I had saved so typically between 30-40 packs on top of that. I end up short some rares and a handful of good epics which leaves me pissy/hesitant about crafting those good rares/epics I didnt get. This new system prevents that. I cant imagine the frustration for F2P players that open a third of what I do and find huge gaps in their collection.
I was hoping for more ways to obtain gold/dust. Or if they increased the chance of getting a epic/legendary from packs, or ia revamp to the dusting system to make it more forgiving.
It is not that I am not pleased with the protection, I was just hoping for something more useful.
Well, for starters they're jumping the expansions up from 3 to 5 a year so instead of having 5500 gold for this expansion, I'm only sitting on something like 2800. I do like the adventures though - 2500 gold for guaranteed legendaries is definitely worth the cost. The no double epics and rares is a nice bonus, but since I''ll be opening less than 40 packs at launch, not much help for F2P.
It should mean every pack you open is just that much better. If you are starving for commons and rares still, like when you open your first 50 packs or so, it just means you are guaranteed something you didnt have. The dupe protection is a godsend....esp for F2P. I think you need to view your previous experience with pack opening differently since this kind of protection has never been done before in HS aside from legendaries.
Isn't 3 like lower than usual?
I heavily doubt this is all of the free packs we're getting.
But we get complete duplicate protection now, meaning these 3 packs are worth more than normal.
This set will easily have the highest number of players with a complete (or close to complete) set. With more players with greater access to the cards, it increases the likelihood of a more diverse meta. These changes making the game more affordable are really going to be good for the health of the game. Give those FTP guys some cards to play with!
No more 9+ copies of one epic card and none of the rest of the set : Hooray!
you know, now that the duplicate protection rule is in effect I don't even mind the old packs anymore. Gives you the opportunity to get back some of the nerfed cards you dusted and never recrafted. Also good for some stray epics
By "in effect, do you mean it is NOW or when the expansion is released?
when the patch hits, that being the 26th I believe. Obviously don't open your packs now
Exactly what I'm thinking. I'm more than happy to spend 100 gold on an old pack if I know I'll get the commons/rare I'm missing, with a reasonable chance I get a bonus epic too.
I wonder if dust farming for future nerfs on commons and rares becomes sensible. If even just a common of a set is nerfed, you can keep opening packs 1 at a time, each pretty much guaranteed to give 2x the nerfed card and hence a minimum of 110 dust. Even better because any golden commons will likely be the nerfed card too.
On a related note: if you open enough packs to have all the commons and there are any you want golden, keep dusting them between packs 'til you open the golden versions! Can do the same with rares if/when you get all of those, though that's a much slower process.
