Magical creatures are escaping from Tol Barad! Play a minion and get a random spell of the same cost, but for free!
A brawl that debuted in 2015, but last seen in 2017, is making its return this week. The Battle of Tol Barad brings us a deckbuilding challenge that will generate plenty of spells when we play minions. You'll receive one Classic pack for your first win in this week's brawl, so build something great!
A summary of this week's brawl can be found below. If you're looking for more information including tips and tricks, you'll want to head on over to our dedicated Battle of Tol Barad Tavern Brawl Guide. It's also a great place to find the best community-built decks!
Speaking of decks, if you have a great list, be sure to add it to our deckbuilder. Set the "deck type" to "Tavern Brawl" so you can then assign it to the correct brawl to make it easy to find.
How Battle of Tol Barad Works
- Create a custom deck using any class.
- When a minion is played, a random spell of the same cost will be added to your hand.
- This spell is reduced to cost 0 - free spells!
- These spells can be from any class, not always the one you picked.

Not true. The RNG of the spells influences games but there's plenty of scope for good deck construction. Rogue in particular has loads of synergy with it, including easy combo activation, constant stream of cards from other classes and a whole ton of minions generating minions, all giving you an advantage.
I built a deck around Spectral Cutlass and consistently beat anyone who didn't highroll Sanctuary on turn 2. I also saw a druid exploit it using the base mana cost of minions so he used Imprisoned Satyr to play a 10 drop on turn 5 then Mind Control my 7/10 Greenskin.
It's a brawl. You want planning and deck construction, play ranked it's a few clicks away.
You're correct that RNG plays a big role here, but deck construction is also really important. Using cards that benefit from spell-casting (like Mana Addict) or from playing lots of cards (like Edwin or Questing Adventurer) can be very powerful.
Big Druid is hella fun here. Dropping big guys and big... Void Contracts?
Just beat a Big Druid with my Tempo Galakrond Priest. It really was a ton of fun! LOL
I spent more time deliberating on what to put in my deck than I did playing the game: I played a Kobold Librarian, got Forked Lightning, used it next turn, and the Rogue quit on me.
Zoolock here I come...
Spell mage and spell druid probably aren't the way to go here. Is it standard or wild?
That’s where you’re wrong! Think of the memes from only playing spells in this brawl! Think of the MEMES!!!!!
I did go with the meme, but a different direction. Had a blast playing my wild 35 legendary deck, featuring Frost Lich Jaina and a trio of Renos.
If this deck didn’t include Millhouse Manastorm, I swear I will reach through this screen and not do anything because that’s physically impossible!
Unfortunately, I do not own a copy of the mighty Millhouse. However, Lorewalker Cho is included.
An acceptable replacement. LOL
