Ben Lee, Game Director of Hearthstone, has addressed the recent survey that went out to some players which went into a potential change to Hearthstone's progression system via a battle pass. Here's what he had to say:
- Rewards and Progression Systems are undergoing a major rework.
- They intend to maintain the value that players earn within the game.
- A large time investment will not be required to complete levels in the new system.
- Ben earns 5000 Gold per expansion cycle, he does not expect to earn less in the new system.
- They want progression to be done your way, not just tied to playing Standard and Wild for the majority of rewards.
- The new system should feel good to participate in and shouldn't force you to make real-life sacrifices to progress.
- All current rewards are going to be repackaged and it will be easier for you to understand how to obtain them.
- Broadening the benefits of the Tavern Pass system is something being investigated for the new system.
- More earnable cosmetic rewards are going to being added during every expansion.
Ben mentions in a later comment to remind everyone that the 5000 gold is just his personal progression each expansion cycle and not a cap in the system.
We will get to see the new progression systems during the next expansion's reveal phase, which should be slated for November. This will be joined with "a host of other things we have been working on to bring more exciting content to Hearthstone".
Quote From Ben Lee This year we took big steps towards making it easier and more affordable than ever for players to acquire an awesome card collection, including making the game more friendly to our free-to-play-players.
With the launch of Ashes of Outland we implemented the no duplicates rules, introduced free competitive decks for new and returning players, significantly increased ranked rewards, added 1st time ranked rewards, held multiple events with hefty reward packages, offered rewarding expansion quest chains and we’ve also committed to providing free single-player Adventure content for the foreseeable future.
We chose to do these things, because they are good for our players and we believe they are the right thing to do for the game. They weren't reactionary measures to competition or a dwindling player-base. We have many millions of players and are going to be here and strive to remain one of the most popular, relevant and fun games around for many years to come.
We are grateful to our players for their continued support and as described above have worked hard to try and value their time and financial investments fairly. We have no intentions of going back on or undermining the progress we have made on this front.
By the above statement I very specifically mean to identify and clarify that we absolutely intend to maintain the value that players can earn within the game and keep the flexibility of purchases that current rewards provide.
We are undertaking a major rework of our rewards and progression systems. A survey did go out about this recently with the aim of gathering information to help us refine the design of the systems. This isn't something new, Hearthstone has been sending out surveys for years and often what is discussed in these surveys does not represent what ends up going into the game.
One of our goals for this new system is to allow you to play Hearthstone your way, you won't be tied to playing only Standard or Wild in order to obtain the majority of the games’ economic rewards anymore.
We are also planning on repackaging (not reducing) the current rewards that you can obtain in Hearthstone and put that information in-front of you in an easy to view and understand manner. We want you to know how many rewards you've acquired, how many more you can earn and what steps you need to take in order to obtain them. In addition, we're adding a number of exciting cosmetic rewards that players can receive during every expansion.
Finally, we are investigating broadening the benefits of the existing Tavern Pass system to supplement the rewards of the upcoming progression system with exciting new cosmetics.
There’s been some discussion that a huge time investment would be required to complete the levels in the system. We don’t intend this to be the case.
I'll use myself as the example here. I reach Legend every month, during an expansion cycle I typically earn more than 5,000 Gold (I would not expect to earn less under the new system). Outside of Hearthstone I am busy father of two children, I have a demanding full-time job, an active life and I play a huge amount of other games outside of Hearthstone in my spare time. We want people like me who love Hearthstone but also have other responsibilities and interests to be able to complete the rewards track levels.
We want our players to feel good about participating in this new take on rewards and progression, without feeling that they might miss out if they don't have time or that they'd have to make sacrifices in their lives in order to do so.
We look forward to showing you this and a host of other things we've been working on to bring more exciting content to Hearthstone during our Year of the Phoenix Mid-year check in at the start of our next expansion's reveal phase.

Well 5000 is more or less what i earn for every expansion, so if i earn that plus other things (even if their value is less) i'd be ok with the new system.
The most important part is that it won't feel like a grind, and that winning isn't much more important than losing for exp
Team 5 - I will make my judgement when we see what's actually implemented.
If I'm earning less gold per expansion cycle (8K on all 3 regions maybe) with the same time, I will consider your promise broken.
On the other hand, keep the promise but let people play in a way that is best for them, and I will applaud you.
Thank God. When I read the article about this I was ready to say goodbye to Hearthstone. Been playing since launch and have every card made (half of them golden). I am a daily player, but not for hours every day. I truly enjoy Hearthstone but will not spend hours everyday playing it. I am very happy with what Lee said.
One thing I think everyone can agree on is it will DEFINITELY be nice to be able to just play BG or Arena or Tavern Brawl and not miss out on the daily quest rewards because we don't want to play standard or wild.
Well, It's good to know that they're listening to the Feedback they are receiving over this Topic. I hope the Devs can figure out a System that satisfies the Players AND is profitable to them.
HS has been doing great Improvements over the past couple Expansions regarding F2P-Friendliness, would be a real Shame if they'd take two big Steps back.
This is a really good take! I was one that misread the battle pass stuff earlier, and I would hate for it to screw over F2P players. I would love a system that is affordable, fun, and rewarding. How I envision battle passes work is like that, but the survey one we saw didn't seem like that. I too hope the devs can create a system that's best for everyone.
Its just another confirmation that this is going to happen no matter what and they are actively trying to keep the hate as low as possible by tweaking ever so slightly every time they get an explosion in reddit or somewhere else. Now the benchmark is set at 5000 gold. Unfortunately for Ben, that's actually not very good since most players can easily get upwards to 8k per expansion if they just play it semi-casually, finishing up all their quests.
Notice that assurances is that the idea is to repackage, not reduce rewards. Which is somewhat true. Again, its not really saying much at all since one of the main issues I had with the BP was that my 57 packs was being stretched out over 4 months, making it tantalizingly within reach if only I have the patience to actually wait. And if I ran out of patience, my only recourse is simple: buy packs with my hard earned cash (of which the exchange rate can go fk itself)
We'll be waiting to see the actual descriptions of the BP when it comes out. At least now we know something of the sort is certainly in the works and its not likely to go away anytime soon.
No puedo estar más de acuerdo contigo.
Repasemos.

Ok, I want 100 packs from gold... on day 1... or, I'll Riot.
I followed the comments on the other thread, and I'm trying to wrap my head around it. I play nearly every day, rarely miss a daily, but don't play much more than dailies unless I'm going for R5 or Legend. I also play Arena at a decent enough level to not lose much gold (Average ~5 wins). I agree that the 5,000 gold banked per expansion sounds about right for me. I understand from the other thread that some players are able to bank double that.
I think most issues could be resolved if they stopped rewarding specific set packs - in general and in Arena - and started rewarding pack tokens to claim any expansion. You could also bank pack tokens into future sets or spend them on wild sets. The biggest problem with Arena is that towards the end of a season you don't want to keep opening current set packs. I also would have gone to Legend last month if I knew the set pack rewards were going to be from Scholomance and not AoO (they visually still appear to be AoO as you level up Ranked). I know that potentially adds a new form of currency into Hearthstone, but the issue with pack rewards is that the value of a given set pack changes over the course of a season and set-rotation-year. The 150 gold arena entrance fee is a set value if you can pick and choose how to spend your pack reward.
Pack tokens would be amazing! But no fucking way activision is going to make something that actually helps us...
Interested how Blizzard tried to set perceived value of the gold reward per month to 5000 gold. I do play mostly for dailies and I earn ~7500 gold per expansion cycle. Setting the max to 5000 would decrease my gold income by one third.
Btw, 4 month per 30 days is 120 days, each day a 60 gold quest and 10 gold for 3 wins (equal to half an hour up to one hour play per day) is 8400 gold
Yes, i always get between 8k-9k per rotation... they are saying 5k because this new system has a clear goal to lower players resources to force them to buy packs... f2p players already can barely play, with the amount of legendaries and epics that are "must have", but now in this new system it'll become a ordinary mobile cash-grab game.
"Ben earns 5000 Gold per expansion cycle, he does not expect to earn less in the new system."
Well, too bad that Ben do not do all dailis in expansion cycle, then he will be earn much more. Now we must earn only that amount, just like Ben.
Ben confirmed that the ammount of earnable gold will not be capped at 5000 gold.
"The 5,000 gold that I reference is my personal experience based on how much I am able to play per expansion. Yours would be different depending on how much time you can put in.
This is categorically not a statement that the system is capped at 5,000 Gold. The section highlighted in bold clearly address this also.
-Ben"

It's amazing to hear that. So, if I understand correctly, there will be no limits on gold? Everything will be depends how much you spend in the game, like it's now? I'm courios about time that we will need to spend to get this 8-10k gold. Thanks for answer.
