Hearthstone's Stonetusk Boar and Bluegill Warrior are Moving to Wild and Retain Charge - Two New Minions to Replace Them in the Core Set

Fresh info on the core set hot off the press! Hearthstone's Alec Dawson confirmed this afternoon that fan-favourites Stonetusk Boar and Bluegill Warrior are moving to Wild.

The original plan for this mighty Beast and Murloc duo was to keep them in Hearthstone's Core set but to remove their Charge keyword in exchange for the much easier to balance Rush. The change would make the cards less oppressive in the Standard meta and would give the designers space without worrying about OTK combos that the cards could be involved in. This was met with some hostility from the community, saying the changes were going to harm decks that they wanted to continue to play.

Blizzard's solution? Move the cards to Wild, let them keep charge, and add two brand new minions to the game for the Core set that will have the Rush keyword instead. They also have new stats!

  • New Stonetusk Boar (Core) - 1 Mana, 2 Attack, 1 Health. Rush.
  • New Bluegill Warrior (Core) - 2 Mana, 3 Attack, 1 Health. Rush.

Additionally, Celestalon has given us some details on what we can expect from the new minions!

  • New Stonetusk Boar is a "friend of Ysera's".
  • New Bluegill Warrior is "rosy-hued".

One last piece of Core set info before card reveals start tomorrow. We will be moving Stonetusk Boar and Bluegill Warrior to Wild, they will go back to their original statlines with Charge. Two new cards will replace Boar/Bluegill in Core, a Beast and a Murloc with Rush.

Looking forward to everyone getting to meet Bluegill Warrior's more rosy-hued friend, and also a friend of Ysera's! ;)

  • alright, once again I am a mental midget unable to read more than 3 words at once.

The weird "friend of Ysera" just threw me off I guess

  • I like this mostly because the outrage was predominantly from Wild, and they listened to Wild players!  Nice!!

  • "New Bluegill Warrior (Core) - 1 Mana, 3 Attack, 1 Health. Rush. " Is the new card actually 1 mana, or is that a typo?

    • Fixed the typo!

    • Typo

  • 2 more core set cards woo

  • Good news everyone!

  • In the long run this will probably be a bad decision for game health. But the reasoning "we want to keep playing these classic decks" is very solid and hits Blizzard right in their own "familiarity" spiel. I'm happy for Anyfin Paladin, but the boar could go in my personal biased opinion.

    • i hope they release the cards with design space "limited by bluegill and boar" for standard, and then just let wild break.

legit, i want wild to hit yu-gi-oh levels of clown fiesta nonsense. just turn 1 OTKs off the mulligan in a few years. (i think it was briefly theoretically possible with kaelthas giving 0 mana spells).

    • I'm also happy that they're leaving Bluegill as it was for Wild play. I've been experimenting with, and have experimented with Murloc lists in the past, and the charge always added some nice burst damage to any Murloc deck

    • Keeping Boar as is in Wild may prove  to be a bad call with the Caverns double revert.  Only time will tell though.

  • march 15 of 2021 a day that will be remembered as the day that crystal core is reborn.

  • Good job, Team5.

  • Omg the devs listened to us wild players and it didn't take 6 months... lets keep that trend up!

  • Great change. While I'm personally not into OTK decks based on Stonetusk Boar shenanigans or Anyfin decks in general, the initial change would have literally killed those decks forever. This lets them have a balanced standard while keeping those decks living and running in Wild, where they belong. Especially after The Caverns Below unnerf, this is most welcome

  • Good to hear I guess. They clearly don't mind Charge existing as a mechanic for Wild so it would be rather unfair if decks relying on those cards just get shafted for no reason.

Also good to see they are flexible enough to adapt to community feedback this late in the process.

  • Nice call!

  • Boar, I am indifferent to.
    Bluegill, I have my criticisms.
