We've got a teaser from Blizzard for the next tribe coming in Hearthstone's next Battlegrounds update - the Quilboar! We don't know a whole lot about the tribe yet, this is only a teaser after all, but the Blood Gem mechanic looks like it will be a common synergy within the tribe for plenty of +1/+1 fun.
- 3 new heroes are being added in the patch.
- 17 new minions are being added in the patch.
- Blood Gems are 0-cost spells that give a friendly minion +1/+1.
Read on for everything Blizzard has talked about for the new tribe. Since the tribe is new, it will always be available in Battlegrounds until the next major patch, though we are still limited to 5 total tribes in a game, so now 3 tribes will be on the ban list when you enter.
Quote From Blizzard The first is a preview of the next major Battlegrounds update: Quilboar! The Quilboar update will include the new Quilboar minion type, 17 new minions, 3 new heroes, and a new mechanic: Blood Gems!
Blood Gems are spells that give a friendly minion +1/+1. Some Quilboar give you Blood Gems, while others have special interactions when Blood Gems are played.
There will still be five minion types per Battlegrounds game once Quilboar are added, meaning that three minion types will be excluded from each game. Just like when Dragons, Pirates, and Elementals were added, Quilboar will show up in every Battlegrounds match until our next major content patch.
The full details of the Quilboar update will be shared in the 20.2 patch notes, tomorrow.

Could this possibly indicate Quillboars becoming a minion type in constructed as well? They don't seem to be the most likely candidate to be added, and you'd think they would have rolled it out with Barrens if they were going to.
No, they said that it's a BG only tribe when they announced it at blizzconline.
Any word when we'll get the actual Mercenaries "rogue-like" mode and when we'll see a mid-expansion release? We've gotta be close-ish on either of those events don't we?
1. Mercenaries is a rogue-lite (perma progression)
2. Mini-Expansion should launch somewhere around May 10. because that's when they Darkmoon Races bundle ends. Probably later than sooner considering that the Battlegrounds Update is coming next week
3. Mercenaries is almost definetly launching late into the expansion just as Battlegrounds and Duels did. Probably as part of the fire festival like the AoO PvE last year. If I had to guess i'd say the upcoming update order would be: Battlegrounds, Mini-Set, Duels, Mercenaries.
I doubt the mini expansion will launch 1 month after the expansion itself. Expect late May, at earliest.
dont all rogue-likes start with no upgrades and end with you fully upgraded ? i fail to see the diferrence between mercenaries and rogue legacy for example, your goal is fully upgrade the castle the same way blizz want you to fully upgrade the mercenaries. sorry if i being dumb but i really would like one class on the subject XD.
To follow up on Sevault
an opposite example to add here are the Binding of Isaac and Enter the Gungeon. Generally speaking the difference comes from the difficulty level. In Rogue-lites the difficulty starts extremly (sometimes even impossibly) high and gets lower the more you play and unlock perma progressions. Ensuring that everyone can beat the game if he sinks enough time into it.
Rogue-likes on the other hand don't have perma progression. The difficulty is still high, but never changes. This Means that not the character, but only the player gets better at the game. So an experienced player could start a new save-file and would not have more trouble beating it than with his 1000h file. Beating an Rogue-like for the first time also feels a lot better than beating an Rogue-lite because you know that YOU overcome the game challanges and not your character with the help of tons of upgrades.
However most Rogue-likes do have a permanent progression nowadays, mostly with unlockable Items or Characters. The difference to Rogue-lites here is that those Items and Characters are not designed to be stronger or weaker than the others. It's more meant as an alternative to increase the variaty and as such the replayable of the game while also giving the player a reason to continue playing it.
This Rogue-like rules can also be found in HS Dungeon runs, most notably Dalaran Heist Adventure. The difficulty never changes and the Decks and HP are not intentionally designed to be better than other ones.
Tombs of Terror on the other hand is almost a hybrid of Rogue-lite and Rogue-like. The 7 fights before the final Boss could definetely be classified as an Rogue-like because the difficulty to get there is always the same. But once you reach the final Boss the game turns into a rogue-lite because he keeps his health and as such makes it easier to beat him the more often you face him.
This text became longer than expected, but as you may have noticed I'm really passionate about this genre (thx to Enter the Gungeon) and I just like to explain things to other people XD
thank you for your detailed answer i a newcomer on the rogue-lite/like world so any info helps XD
also while we are on topic is dead-cells a like or lite? i will say lite for what you told me but cant hurt to ask.
To be fair I havn't played or seen much of Dead Cells, because I prefear rogue-likes. But it seem to me that you can permanently upgrade Items which should make the game easier and as such classify it as a rogue-lite.
thanks for your answer, and one last question (i being annoying i know XD) do you think enter the gungeon is too hard for someone like me that sucks in Shoot 'em ups( or bullet hells ) ? i always wanted to buy it but, i afraid i will not get very far with my shooting skills XD
Well, EtG is a bullet Hell game, but a really fair one. Every room is a pre-build and every attack pattern can be dodged without any Items. Aiming also isn't really a problem in this game. The challange mostly comes from dodging the enemies attacks. As for the difficulty I think that it's certainly challanging, but not too hard. I managed to beat the first floor after my 2th run or so and the second one roughly 6 runs later.
Ofcourse Item luck can help you, but in the end it's all about dodging. So I'd say give it a shot (pun intended). It's only 20 bucks and definetely worth the price.
thanks i will try it when i get some spare money XD.
Rogue-likes don't have permanent progressions, rouge-lites do. Hades is a rogue-lite, since 80% of your strength comes from the temporary build and 20% from the permanent buffs, and Mercenaries should be similar
so to be a rogue-like 100% of your power must come from temporary builds?
Mercenaries, at best, will start "closed beta" when the next expansion is launched, and you will be able to enter if you preorder the bundles. Open beta will start probably a couple days/weeks after the next expansion launches because that's how Duels and Battlegrounds started and there is literally no way they are not gonna monetize it in some way.
The Problem with that Theory is that Mercenaries will be released in the first phase while the next expansion is part of the second one. There is also no way that they are releasing an major new gamemode and a new Expansion at the same time, because they would distract the focus from each other. "Releasing" as in playable for the consumer even if behind a paywall (because that's where the hype peaks)
edit: Oh, you probably meant annocuned instead of launched. Then yeah, seems likely. Though I'm not completely sure because Mercenaries is a much bigger deal for them than Duels was. So that could be a reason to belive that it's launching before the next expansion gets announced.
But whatever, in the end all we can do is to wait and see.
Quilboar seem like an interesting tribe. Blood Gems are basicly Mukla's banana's but more interactive than just "play banana on minion", blood gems look a lot more interesting because you have to strategise around them. Do i play them immediatly on a minion, or do i save them for when you have a Quilboar card that gives additional effects.
The bad thing i can already predict about Quilboars so far (May change depending on the other cards and new heroes) is the inconsistancy of getting Blood Gems. It might be too hard to get those Blood Gem giving Quilboars, considering you need to: 1. Find Quilboars, which might be pretty hard depending on your RNG. (I think Quilboar stuff is boosted first few weeks, so this rather kicks in after the next big patch.) 2. Blood Gems are pretty nice, people might just buy the Quilboars just to give +1/+1 to a minion without a tribe, or minions that are kinda hard to buff?
Two heroes i already know will be very good with Quilboars are: Brann Bronzebeard, because his heropower can find the Quilboars that give Blood Gems with a battlecry. And obviously Shudderwockwoke can also use Quilboars that have a battlecry very well. Of course this is just me thinking that Blood Gems are mostly given by battlecries, but there is always the possibility we'll get a "Deathrattle: add a Blood Gem to your hand" Quilboar. (Kind of a re-print of the tavern 3 minion that has "Deathrattle: add a coin to your hand".)
I'm very excited about the next patch, seems like a fun time to play battlegrounds again!
Edit: Now that 3 minion types WONT be in a game, this will make battlegrounds even more diverse. That's really nice, personally i prefer the games where you can have more succes with "Bad tribes/heroes" because Murlocs/Elementals are excluded! :)
As hyped as I am for this tribe, I am a little annoyed cos I was working on a Kobolds tribe with a very similar (if not the same mechanic) as Blood gems, where they'd generate and synergise with Candles (0 mana, give a kobold +1/+1).
I'll have to come up with a new main mechanic. All that aside, can't wait to play the Quillboars in Battlegrounds and see who we've got as heroes.
You too?! I am working on a Battlegrounds expansion based on the Grim Guzzler, with the Dark Iron tribe and Pints that give +3 Health!
Procrastinating too much as usual :(
That sounds like a really cool theme, I would love to see the Grim Guzzler in the Battlegrounds! Tbh I'm waiting until the full Quillboar set is announced later today to see how far I need to redesign the kobolds tribe. Who knows? Maybe neither of us will have to change anything.
