They thought they were slick, but we caught them. During July 23rd's Duels reveal, Hearthstone Streamer Zeddy revealed Darius Crowley as a new playable Duels Hero, as well as 4 new Passive Treasures. Crowley is the most recent addition to the Duels game mode, which takes place exactly 4 months after the League of Explorers were added to the Heroes pool.

The thing is, Patch 24.0 (the one that added Crowley to the bunch) may have anticipated part of the future plans for the Duels game mode.

Throwback to The Witchwood's Monster Hunt

If you're a Hearthstone veteran, you'll remember about The Witchwood's solo content - the Monster Hunt. Released just after Kobolds & Catacombs' Dungeon Run (which is among the most appreciated PvE contents of Hearthstone), the Monster Hunt consists of 4 different Heroes, represented by Legendaries printed in The Witchwood, who are on the hunt of Hagatha the Witch. As you can see below, here are the four playable characters you can choose:

As you know by now, Darius Crowley has received new Hero Powers and is already a Duels playable Hero, but what about the others? Well, we may have a clue.

If you open your profile journal, go to the "Game Modes" section and look for Duels, you'll notice that the journal already has in-game achievements for both Shaw and Tess!

Although they aren't playable right now, it is reasonable to speculate that other Heroes from the Monster Hunt will be added to the mode during the next few months!

What About the Third?

Regarding the three Heroes that are yet to join Duels, here's a quick breakdown of what's their jam in the Monster Hunt.

As the name suggests, Houndmaster Shaw is all about his Beasts. Shaw's Hero Power, Dog Whistle, will synergize will the Active and Passive Treasures you'll receive during the run.

Tess Greymane, on the other hand, retains her "burgle" nature: the Scavenge Hero Power is an efficient tool to play  some key spells over and over again, like Jade Shuriken, Eviscerate or Deadly Poison. It will Discover class spells your opponent played too, so you may be able give them a taste of their own medicine!

Finally, we have Toki, Time-Tinker. Curiously enough, the profile journal does not have any Toki-related achievements, which is something we struggle to explain to ourselves. Toki is a time manipulator: as the Temporal Loop Hero Power suggests, Toki can manipulate the RNG on her own will, getting a second roll on the dice, literally.

It is clear that such Hero Power could never be implemented in Duels: games would take a significantly higher amount of time and playing against Toki would be quite frustrating. On the other hand, there's no denying that Team 5 may retain Toki's flavor while also giving her brand new Hero Powers (and Signature Treasures).
